Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish DECEMBER 16, 2018 A Letter from the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends: With the fast approach of Christmas, I'd like to use the holidays as a chance to say a few words of thanks. We have a great Staff here at Our Lady of Lourdes. I appreciate and treasure all the good they do. They work long hours for very little pay. And they go above and beyond to get the best done for our parish. In particular, I'd like to highlight one of our longtime staff people who recently decided to retire. Betty McCaffrey has been working here at Our Lady of Lourdes for over 40 years! Betty is now in her 90s and still not only has offered generous service as a secretary in our Religious Education Office, but is a faithful and devoted parishioner who can be found every week in the pews of the Church, praying with you and me. She has raised a great family, and is both loved and respected by family and friends and parishioners. On your behalf, I want to thank Elizabeth McCaffrey for her longstanding commitment to the spiritual growth of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. We pray that Betty will enjoy many more years of health and happiness. And we treasure her goodness to this parish family for so many years!! And while I'm thanking Betty, let me also use the holidays as a proximate opportunity to express my deep and abiding gratitude for the priests and deacons of our parish. Father Tony, Kevin, Andiy and James are a true blessing to our faith community. I'm also grateful for the continued help of our friend, Father Cletus (now stationed at St. Boniface in Elmont, but a regular visitor to Our Lady of Lourdes). I also thank native son, Father Peter Folan, SJ. When he comes to visit his dear Mom, we all benefit from his insightful preaching and dynamic presence. Thanks as well to Father Emmanuel, our Summer help now back to studying in Vatican City. As you probably realize, we are richly blessed to have so many good and dedicated priests, especially in these days of priestly shortages. And thanks to our outstandingly generous Deacons as well. In Deacons Fred, Dominick and Frank we have men of true spiritual richness, genuine humility and a deep desire to help our parish to grow and prosper in the Lord. I am so grateful to them for all the good they do. And I'll end by thanking you, our good-hearted and ever faithful members of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. And I thank not only those who participate in our parish from Massapequa Park and Farmingdale and Massapequa, but to all of those who travel from other communities each week to join us in prayer and celebration. You are a part of our growing family and we warmly treasure you too! Have a blessed and Merry Christmas.! And let's all remember to focus on Jesus this Christmas, the reason for the season!! IN His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Thursday, December 20 through Tuesday, January 1: Christmas Break Office Closed Wednesday, January 2: Level 7: Saints and Sponsor Activities are due Saturday, January 5: Epiphany Play following the 5pm Mass Sunday, January 13: Level 8 Family Mass at 10:30am. Meet in the reserved section on the right side of the church at 10:15am. Students must sign in with a teacher. Those who are absent must attend a future family mass to fulfill this Confirmation Preparation requirement. Think First and Stay Safe safety presentation during class time. Parents are welcome to attend. Levels 1 and 2: Wednesday, January 2 or Saturday, January 5 Levels 3 and 4: Wednesday, January 23 or Saturday, January 26 Levels 5 and 6: Wednesday, February 6 and Saturday, February 9 Following the 5 PM Mass on Saturday December 8, our parish held their annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Many families braved the cold temperatures to join in the celebration. Father Kevin Thompson emceed the event like a pro, including the 10-second countdown to the lighting of the tree. The a cappella harmony of the carolers, led by our music director Elizabeth Woods, warmed everyone s hearts. And, the Knights of Columbus warmed everyone s cold fingers and toes with hot chocolate and candy canes. A record number of our students participated in this year s Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. Nineteen creative entrees were submitted! We want to acknowledge all participants on a job well done in keeping the true meaning and spirit of Christmas alive! Level 1: Daniela Anzelmo, Jack Broderick Level 2: Anthony Cataldi, Chiara Langkay, Thomas O Keefe Level 3: Amalia Ciccio, Chase Graell, Elena Lopez Level 4: Timmy Broderick Level 5: Olivia Chirco, Sophia Chirco, Savannah Eckert, Elidi Laquidara, James O Keefe Level 7: Alessia Ferro, Kevin O Keefe Level 8: Michael Hughes, Bianca Mannino, Julio Rivera After our Level 2 students received the Sacrament of First Penance, Monsignor Lisante offered his impressions of the celebration during his Sunday Homily. He mentioned that as part of the Confession, he asked each child if he/she goes to church. Many children responded that they do not attend church because nobody takes them. Monsignor appealed to all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and neighbors, as the primary teachers of the faith, to bring the children in their lives to Mass each week. Children learn what they live, and if they see that other weekend activities take precedence over going to church, then your example is teaching them that Mass and the faith is not important.

Page 6 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Parish Outreach Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est DECEMBER 16, 2018 Parish Outreach Food Pantry Once again, I would like to extend my gratitude to the following for their wonderful contributions this Thanksgiving holiday: Our Lady of the Island Columbiettes, McKenna Elementary School, Knights of Columbus Council #6911, Robert A. Conroy Jr. Foundation, Our Lady of Lourdes CCD Students, Woman s Club of Massapequa, Massapequa Little League, Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society, TJ Maxx Massapequa, Girl Scout Troop #3632, Am- Vets Post 88, Massapequa Lions Club, Massapequa High School, Massapequa Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Eastlake Elementary School, and countless others whose extraordinary concern for those less fortunate is truly a great blessing! Thank you again for your help in making it all possible! On behalf of Parish Outreach, our volunteers, and those who your kindness has touched, thank you once again! Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral Mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. We Care Blankets As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 3,323. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260. Christmas Giving Tree As we look forward to the Christmas season, the Christmas Giving Tree will again be displayed in the entrance of the Church as of the weekend of November 24 & 25, until Sunday, Dec.16 h for your consideration. Please consider taking an ornament and purchasing the suggested gift card in an amount of your choosing, but not exceeding $50 on each card, allowing us to serve more people in need. We will begin distribution of the Giving Tree Gift Cards the week of Dec. 10 th, to allow our neighbors in need time to shop for their families. Gift Cards should be returned to Parish Outreach on or before the week of December 10th. Outreach hours are Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 10:00am 2:00pm, and Wednesday 10:00am - 11:30am. Thank you for all you do in kindness to others!

Page 11 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish DECEMBER 16, 2018 PRO-LIFE NEWS Laws are not necessarily embodiment of a moral code. Indeed, it is possible that some laws undermine, rather than enrich, the human family. Members of a pluralistic society [must] face the challenging fact that what is clearly legal is not automatically clearly moral. If we need evidence of this, we only need to think of laws that have supported slavery, the subordination of women, disenfranchising of Native Americans, the suppression of innocent human life in the womb or in situations of terminal illness, and various forms of ethnic, racial, and religious prejudice. Even when such policies were or are legal, they were still immoral. (Cardinal Hickey, 1980) OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE MEMORIAL MASS Tuesday, December 18 at 7:30pm, Msgr. Delaney K of C, 110 Merritts Rd, Farmingdale. There will be a special blessing for expectant mothers. Refreshments served. For info call Keith Wilson, 516-633-1435. All welcome. MARCH FOR LIFE 2019 Washington, DC Friday, January 18, 2019. See future bulletins for more details. DID YOU KNOW? At the beginning of 2018, Planned Parenthood had 166 facilities that committed surgical abortions and 190 facilities that did medication abortions but not surgical. The number of medication-only Planned Parenthood abortion centers has been growing at a rapid rate over the last decade. Whether through surgical abortions, medication abortions, or the abortifacient actions of numerous Planned Parenthood birth control products, preborn babies are dying as a result of activity at Planned Parenthood facilities.
