PARISH NEWSLETTER March 2016 for the villages of Aldwark, Alne, Flawith, Tholthorpe, Tollerton and Youlton The Anglican ministers for the villages in the Parish of Alne are Rev. Chris Park and Carmel Gittens. They can be contacted by telephone on 01347 838122 or by e-mail at pastaparko@parkfamily.me.uk and 01423 360702 or carmel-gittens@live.co.uk respectively. Mother s Day 6 th March at 10.30am St Mary s Church Alne Please join us for this special occasion when we will thank God for our mums, and celebrate baptisms which have taken place during the past eight years!

Love is. A few years ago there were a series of cartoons which began with the phrase love is followed by a brief one liner. A question which we all face from time to time is what does it look like for me to love someone, and am I loveable? CS Lewis who wrote the quote above is probably most famous for the Narnia stories. However, Lewis was also an academic and a theologian. The film Shadowlands tells something of his story and particularly his relationship with the American writer Joy Davidman, - 2 -

which was short-lived. Joy died from cancer just four years after they were married. In caring for Joy, Lewis discovered the cost of loving for her highest good and the pain of loss, which was a huge challenge to his Christian faith. A personal question we might ask could be; if I were to love another for their highest good, who would that be and what might that love look like? The flip side would be is there anyone who loves me for my highest good? If you have some like this then you are fortunate indeed. As we approach Easter we are reminded of the death of Jesus and his words greater love has no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. Jesus unselfishly chose the agony of crucifixion for our higher good because he loves us. As we remember the events leading up to Jesus crucifixion in church and in our homes, we are reminded that there is one man Jesus who loves everyone unselfishly for their highest good no matter what. To Jesus we are all loveable. Rev Chris Park (Vicar) Archibishop Sentamu s Pilgrimage Archbishop Sentamu is currently on a pilgrimage visiting the whole of York Diocese. He will be in this area during the first week of May and specifically with us on May 4 th. Check April magazine for details if you would like to meet him! - 3 -

You can check our webpage on www.alnevillage.co.uk for more information on the hall and upcoming events or follow us on Facebook. The Teenage Cancer Trust Event - 30 th April 2016 All of us will have a loved one who has suffered from cancer at one time or another. It is a cold and lonely place for both the sufferer and their family and friends. We have a very brave and inspirational young man in the village at the moment, who is enduring gruelling treatment for leukaemia for the second time. Getting through your teens is hard enough, but to do it in hospital while your friends lives are moving on without you is particularly tough. The Teenage Cancer Trust does amazing work to help. Amongst other things, they put a lot of money in to teenage units, to enable fully equipped day rooms making it easier for young people to have their friends and family visit. They provide individual entertainment units so patients can watch TV and DVD s without the usual hire charges, which mount up if you are in hospital for months at a time, and can be beyond the financial reach of many families. They pay for complimentary therapies, helping young people deal with their pain and anxiety, and they pay for beds, allowing visitors to stay overnight with their loved ones at that most difficult time. In recognition of the great work that The Teenage Cancer Trust does, we are hosting a music evening in Alne Village Hall on 30 th April 2016 featuring two local covers bands. It promises to be a great evening, and for those of you who love to dance, you will not be disappointed. Tickets are priced at 10, and are available from Vikki 838550 or Gudrun 838864. This is such a good cause, and all you have to do to support it is come along and have a great time. - 8 -

Alne Oil Co-operative Founder member of the Lower Swale Syndicate of Oil Co-operatives With the falling oil prices, Lower Swale Syndicate members saw a low price of just 18.75ppl + VAT for kerosene delivered on 22 nd January (Boilerjuice were quoting 23.74ppl + VAT on the same day). Prices have crept up a few pence since then and the latest price for deliveries at the beginning of February was 22.53ppl + VAT. This compares with Boilerjuice s price of 24.42ppl and a Member s quotation from a certain well-known local supplier of a whopping 32ppl a few days earlier! In the past 12 months, Tate Fuels have supplied 1,416,248 litres of heating oil to Syndicate Members, saving ~ 45,700 against Boilerjuice quoted prices. If you are already a Co-operative Member and need oil, go to Tate s website: www.tateoil.co.uk. Look on the menu bar on the homepage for Buying Groups and select LSOS (Lower Swale Oil Syndicate) to login (you will need the password provided by Tate Fuels) then fill in the online form with your requirements. Please remember that Weights and Measures legislation requires you to take a minimum of 500 litres. If estimating your requirement to fill your tank, please be as accurate as possible as the tankers only carry what has been ordered for that day s delivery run. Tate Fuels have undertaken to deliver within 10 working days from order. The price charged will be that applying on the delivery date. Membership is open to all. If you live in or around Alne and want to know more about the Alne Heating Oil Co-operative, please e-mail alne@swaleoil.org.uk or visit the Alne Village website at: http://www.alnevillage.co.uk/groups_oil.html If you don t have internet access or e-mail, please ask a relative, friend or neighbour to help you.
