Funeral Service of Harold Martin Bergt 1920 ~ 2018 BUT THANKS BE TO GOD, WHO GIVES US the victory through our LORD JESUS CHRIST. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:57

Funeral Service of Harold Martin Bergt St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church (LCMS), Fairmont 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018 T T T Stand and face entrance to the church INVOCATION & REMEMBRANCE OF BAPTISM P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P In Holy Baptism Harold was clothed with the robe of Christ s righteousness that covered all his sin. St. Paul says, Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? C We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. ENTRANCE HYMN: LSB 461 Sts. 1-3, 8 I Know That My Redeemer Lives 1 I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, He lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living head. 2 He lives triumphant from the grave; He lives eternally to save; He lives all-glorious in the sky; He lives exalted there on high. 3 He lives to bless me with His love; He lives to plead for me above; He lives my hungry soul to feed; He lives to help in time of need. 4 He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same; Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives: I know that my Redeemer lives! Text (sts. 1 5) and Music: Public domain 2

KYRIE, SALUTATION & COLLECT OF THE DAY Sit P Lord, have mercy upon us. C Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. O God of grace and mercy, we give thanks for Your lovingkindness shown to Harold and to all Your servants who, having finished their course in faith, now rest from their labors. Grant that we also may be faithful unto death and receive the crown of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT READING: Psalm 23 (ESV) P The LORD is my shepherd; C I shall not want. P He makes me lie down in green pastures. C He leads me beside still waters. P He restores my soul. C He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name s sake. P Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; C your rod and your staff, they comfort me. P You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; C you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. P Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, C and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 3

EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 (ESV) Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Stand P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. VERSE (General) P Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus Christ is the firstborn of the dead; C to Him be glory and power forever. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL: St. Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV) P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 7 th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. [Jesus said,] Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. 4

APOSTLES CREED Sit P God has made us His people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. HYMN: LSB 677 For All the Saints SERMON: Abounding in the Lord s Work (1 Cor. 15:51-58) Stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray to the Lord, our God and Father, who raised Jesus from the dead. P Almighty God, You have knit Your chosen people together into one communion in the mystical body of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Give to Your whole Church in heaven and on earth Your light and peace. Lord, in Your mercy, P Grant that all who have been baptized into Christ s death and resurrection may die to sin and rise to newness of life and so pass with Him through the gate of death and the grave to our joyful resurrection. Lord, in Your mercy, P Grant that all who have been nourished by the holy body and blood of Your Son may be raised to immortality and incorruption to be seated with Him at Your heavenly banquet. Lord, in Your mercy, 5

P Give to the family of Harold and to all who mourn comfort in their grief and a sure confidence in Your loving care that, casting all their sorrow on You, they may know the consolation of Your love. Lord, in Your mercy, P Give courage and faith to the bereaved, that within the communion of Your Church they may have strength to meet the days ahead in the assurance of a holy and certain hope and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love who have departed in the faith. Lord, in Your mercy, P Help us, we pray, in the midst of things we cannot understand, to believe and find comfort in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Lord, in Your mercy, P Receive our thanks for Harold and for all the blessings You bestowed on him in this earthly life. Bring us at last to our heavenly home that with him we may see You face to face in the joys of paradise. Lord, in Your mercy, P O God of all grace, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to bring life and immortality to light. We give You thanks that by His death He destroyed the power of death and by His resurrection He opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Strengthen us in the confidence that because He lives we shall live also, and that neither death nor life nor things present nor things to come will be able to separate us from Your love, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. LORD S PRAYER P Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6

NUNC DIMITTIS P I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. C Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace; Your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation which You have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal You to the nations and the glory of Your people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. CONCLUDING COLLECT P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Lord God, our shepherd, You gather the lambs of Your flock into the arms of Your mercy and bring them home. Comfort us with the certain hope of the resurrection to everlasting life and a joyful reunion with those we love who have died in the faith; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. MEAL PRAYER C Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed. Oh, give thanks unto to the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever. Amen. BENEDICAMUS AND BENEDICTION P Let us bless the Lord. C Thanks be to God. P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace. 7

P Let us go forth in peace, C in the name of the Lord. Amen.
