Greetings: The study that Pastor Pat brings on Sunday mornings is a reflection of the study for that week. It represents a lot of research. Not all of what he has prepared is communicated. In an attempt to continue the learning process, he is making available his study notes to the congregation. These notes are edited, but not book ready. To the critical eye, mistakes can possibly be found. Therefore, he asks that you take the material with humility, teach-ability, and charity. Enjoy and if you should have any questions or corrections, please do not hesitate to email him at pastorpat@waukeshabible.org. Date: September 20, 2015 Title: The Day of Atonement JESUS JUDGES Text: Leviticus 23:26-32 Theme: At His second Coming, Jesus will judge the quick and the dead. Introduction: SPRING FEASTS At His first coming, Jesus fulfills the four spring feasts. In fulfilling the four spring feasts, there are no time gaps between the events. FALL FEASTS At His second coming, Jesus fulfills the three fall feasts. In fulfilling the three fall feasts, there are no time gaps between the events. FULFILLMENT Jesus fulfilled the four spring feasts on their appointed days. Should we not expect Jesus to fulfill the three fall feasts on their appointed days? THE LAST DAYS The New Testament writers always saw themselves in the last days. It began at Pentecost and ends with the Second Coming. Acts 2:17; 2 Tim. 3:1; James 5:3; 2 Pet. 3:3 IT S SIGNIFICANCE The Feast of Trumpets announces THE DAY OF ATONEMENT. The Gathering is for THE DAY OF ATONEMENT. TISHRI SABBATH MONTH 1 ST day of the 7 th month = Trumpet 10 th day of the 7 th month = Day of Atonement 15 th day of the 7 th month = Booths Outline: I. THE DAY OF ATONEMENT 1. Two goats are brought forward, one is for the Lord, one is the scapegoat (Azazel); 2. The high priest goes into the most holy place with a censer of burning coals; 3. The high priest sacrifices the Lord's goat; 4. The high priest enters the most holy place with the blood of the goat and sprinkles it on the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant; 5. The high priest confesses the sins of Israel on the Azazel goat; 6. The Azazel goat is left in the wilderness cut off from Israel. 1
II. KEY CONCEPTS 1. The Atonement presupposes A BREACH in the creatures relationship to their Creator. Sin exists. 2. The Atonement presupposes a HOLINESS in the Creator that is UNATTAINABLE by human effort. Apartness exists. 3. The Atonement presupposes MEDIATION. Someone intercedes in behalf of the offending party. 4. ATONEMENT IS MADE. The offended does something for the offending that could not otherwise be done by the offender. 5. On the DAY OF ATONEMENT two actions take place. 6. First, sin is COVERED. This is what atonement means. 7. Second, sin is IMPUTED and thus, REMOVED. 8. Nothing created could carry out both acts. TWO offerings were necessary. 9. On the DAY OF ATONEMENT, the Mediating High Priest made offering for Himself and for the sins of the Nation. 10. Because of the corruption of both the actors and the offerings, the event was ANNUAL. 11. Heb. 10:4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. III. IN JESUS 1. JESUS is the PERFECT MEDIATING HIGH PRIEST who makes a sacrifice for the sins of His people ONCE FOR ALL. 2. JESUS is the PERFECT SACRIFICE whereby sins are covered and removed. 3. IN JESUS 4. Because of who offers and what is offered there is no longer a need for further sacrifice/offering. DO YOU HEAR THIS? IV. HEBREWS 1. The Book of Hebrews leads all other New Testament books as to how often it quotes from the Old Testament text. 2. In the original, the Hebrews quotes total 737 words, which amount to about 15% of its complete content. 3. For Romans, on the other hand, the quotes come to only 639 words or about 9% of the total. So the population density of Old Testament quotes in Hebrews is greater than in any other book of the New Testament. 4. The quotes make up a significant proportion of the Epistle. 2
V. ALL READY/NOT YET The Book of Hebrews speaks of Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament Shadow. Jesus is the ALL READY. 1 Corinthians 15 speaks of the NOT YET. At Calvary, the death of death has commenced [The Book of Hebrews]. At His Second Coming, the death of death is completed [1 Corinthians 15]. VI. 1 CORINTHIANS 15 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming, 24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has bolished all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death. 27 For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, All things are put in subjection, it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. 28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all. (1 Cor. 15:23-28) 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. 55 O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Cor. 15:51-58) VII. HEBREWS 10:1ff 1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.... 10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ ONCE FOR ALL. 11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOR ALL TIME, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, 13 WAITING from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET [THINK 1 CORINTHIANS 15:25, 26]. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. (Heb. 10:1-4, 10-14) VIII. THE POINT When Jesus comes again, He will have defeated all of His enemies and the full consequences of His redemptive work will be fully displayed and experienced. 3
