Children and Youth Choir We invite all children and youth to join the San Felipe de Neri Children and Youth Choir. This is the first year we are setting up this choir to sing at the 5:00PM Christmas Eve Mass. We will have two practice for the Christmas Eve Mass. The practices will be on: Wednesday, December 19 th at 6:00PM; and Sunday, December 23 rd at 3:00PM. Join us! From the desk of Fr. Andy, Pastor San Felipe de Neri We have entered the third week of Advent. This week is traditionally called, Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from the Latin for Rejoice. There is a sense of rejoicing today as we begin the second part of our Advent observance. We have lit the rose or, pink candle on our Advent wreath. The brighter light has given us a clearer resemblance to the light of Christ we hope will break the darkness of our fear and winter despair. In today s gospel, we hear John the Baptist being asked the question, What should we do? He is talking to the crowds (that is us). John challenges the people of his day and ours too. In John s instruction basically, he is asking us to consider how we want to prepare for the coming of Christ by giving to others from our hearts. So, it continues. I have been humbled and very moved by the outpouring of kindness, gentleness, care and concern by many throughout our church and community. People have been generous to give their time in the various opportunities to serve in our community. Or, by giving coats to the program, Coats for Kids, to ensure that those who are cold might have a warm coat this season. I am humbled by the generosity to see our new hymnals get all dedicated (there are still some more that can be reserved). In the days of John the Baptist and Jesus, the world was in turmoil. Government was corrupt. Those who were most in need were not being treated fairly or, even humanly. The economy was good if you were in the upper classes. Life was very difficult for most of those who were alive. Mortality rates were high as diseases of many kinds often took people at an early age. There was need of hope in the world. The feeling of hopelessness seemed to significantly outweigh the possibilities of basic happiness. In those days, the people were searching for something real to truly believe. Their faith systems had not succeeded in granting them the peace and serenity they wanted. The prophets of old had promised a Savior, The Messiah. The time was right and finally, God heard their cries. Getting back to our question, What should we do? gives us pause. Could it be that we, like the people in the days of John and Jesus are not that different? It seems so. Many of us might feel the same sorts of things as the people of John s and Jesus time. We also find great peace and hope as we continue our preparation for Christmas in the bright lights appearing more and more in the darkness. We find comfort in the planning of what will be happening all around our community in the next weeks to come. We find solace in the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Guadalupe for whom we celebrated her feast this past week. The main difference between the time of John and Jesus and now is that we have our 2000 years of history, experience, grace and love that has been shared. Perhaps this week we can spend some time thinking about and praying for guidance on what it is we are seeking. What will you do? May God bless us all today and always!
