Romans 9:1-5 (10-13) Proper 13A Pentecost 12 August 6, 2008 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Boise, Idaho Pastor Tim Pauls Isaiah 55:1-5 1 "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Romans 9:1-5(10-13) 1 I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9 For this is what the promise said: "About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son." 10 And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad--in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls 12 she was told, "The older will serve the younger." 13 As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." Matthew 14:13-21 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us." 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 17 And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, "Is it I?" 20 He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." Thots Paul doesn t have to be accursed for the sake of the Jews salvation, because Christ already was

Romans 9:1-5 (10-13) Proper 13A Pentecost 12 August 6, 2008 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Boise, Idaho Pastor Tim Pauls To You Belong the Gifts I. St. Paul has great sorrow and unceasing anguish in his heart, and the reason for his sadness is clear: he mourns for his fellow Jews who have rejected Christ. If anyone should easily believe in the Savior, it should be his fellow Israelites. Why? Because as a people, they have so much going for them, such a head start over the Gentiles. Listen to the list: to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. To them belong the adoption it was the nation of Israel whom God chose as His own people in the Old Testament. He protected them from enemies, delivered them out of Egypt, led them through the wilderness and gave them the Promised Land. He didn t do it for all nations. He did it for them. To them belong the glory. They witnessed God s presence in their midst. They saw Him lead them out of Egypt in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. They saw Him descend onto Mt. Sinai. They heard Him speak. The Lord didn t reveal Himself like this to any other nation, but only to them. To them belong the covenants. God made a covenant with Abraham, promising that he would be the father of a great nation and that through him all nations would be blessed. He repeated it to Isaac and Jacob. He didn t make covenants with other nations only them. To them belong the giving of the Law. From the time of Moses, the Israelites had the Law of God. Not just His commandments they had His Torah, His holy Word, both His Law and His Gospel promise. No other nation became stewards of His Word in the Old Testament. He did this only for Israel. To them belong the worship. God dwelled in the Temple in Jerusalem. He didn t reserve a Holy of Holies in a temple in each nation, but only there. Any Gentile who wanted to worship the one true God at His Temple had to come to Jerusalem, for that s where the Lord was present in the Holy of Holies. To them belong the promises and the patriarchs. Again, God promised His faithfulness and mercy to the fathers of Israel again and again. He made no such promises to any of the nations around them. Finally, lists Paul, from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. See, all those previous things that Paul lists were given by God to point to Jesus Christ. He chose them as a nation because His Son would become flesh within that nation. He revealed to them His glory because His Son would walk among them, full of grace and truth, going about His plan of salvation. He gave them His Law so that they could witness Jesus fulfilling it and know He was the Savior. He gave them His Gospel promises so that they could witness Jesus fulfilling those and know He was the Savior. He gave them the worship and dwelt among them in the temple because Jesus would become flesh and dwell among them in the temple of His body. All that God gave to them as His people was to prepare the way of Jesus as the Savior so that, when He came, they might rejoice and declare, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Some did rejoice, but many called for His death. Thus Jesus was arrested, tried, scourged and crucified. Three days later, He rose from the dead. But many still rejected Him; and after He ascended into heaven, they began to persecute His Church as they were able. Thus Paul was in anguish. These were his brothers, his kinsmen. He knew them well and don t forget that he had once led them in persecuting the Church. But the Lord had opened his eyes, and so Paul believed that Jesus is God over all, blessed forever. With all of those signs God had given, why did his kinsmen still reject Jesus? Let this be a warning: if your sinful flesh is not at work to reject God s gifts outright, then it will work very hard at changing your beliefs about them. Remember: God adopted the Israelites as His people, promising to the patriarch Abraham that they would be saved by the Savior who would be born among them. By the time of Jesus, though, this had been twisted. The people objected to Jesus and saw no need for a Savior, saying, We have Abraham as our father (Luke 3:8) we re God s people by our ancestry, not by grace. Likewise, remember that God dwelled with them in the temple in Jerusalem, present with them. Over time, however, the Israelites believed that the temple and its furnishing mattered more than the Lord. Thus they saw no problem with setting up false gods to worship even within the temple. Or else they believed, for instance, that they would be victorious in battle as long as they carried the Ark of the Covenant with them. It was almost as if they believed that God was stuck in a box; and as long as they kept the box, He was with them and they couldn t lose. Remember, too, that they had God s Word His commandments and His promises of the Savior. Yet by the time of Jesus, the chief priests clearly taught that the people were saved by keeping laws, not by trusting in the Savior. Do you see the danger? It is very possible to hold onto rites and rituals and gifts of God, but to regard them only as a past heritage and then completely change the religion. No wonder the Lord declared, 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 this people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:7-9). That s why Paul was in such anguish: in their religion, his kinsmen had all sorts of words and signs from God that pointed to Jesus, the Savior. But lacking repentance and faith, they rejected Jesus and reinterpreted those words and signs to mean something different. How great was Paul s sorrow? Listen to this: he says, For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers. So great was his anguish that he spoke of sacrificing himself, of being cut off from Christ, if it would help them. It wouldn t, of course. All it would mean is that he d be lost along with them. But here is the Good News: while Paul becoming accursed and cut off couldn t help them, Jesus becoming accursed and cut off already had. That is what happened at His crucifixion. Do not forget His thirsting shout, My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? On the cross, the Son of God was cut off from His Father. On the cross, He was accursed, bearing the judgment for the sins of all the world both Jew and Gentile. God-over-all became the least of all and the worst of sinners, so that all of Paul s kinsmen who believed in Him would be saved. As Paul goes on to say in verse 6, the Word of God has not failed: He continues to offer salvation to all who will believe in Him. II.

At first glance, it might seem that this text has very little to do with us. However, I believe that we can draw some important lessons and comfort from it. First off, what belongs to you as gifts from God regarding your salvation? To you God has given His holy Word: not just the Old Testament which told of the Savior who was coming, but the New Testament which tells you of the Savior who has come. You have His Law to show you your sin, so you know what destroys your faith and salvation. You have His Gospel which tells you that you re forgiven for Jesus sake, and so your salvation is sure. Furthermore, you have the adoption as sons. God has made you His children in Holy Baptism. You have the Lord s presence with you not in a pillar of cloud and fire, but in His Word and His Sacraments. You have His promise that He draws so near to you as to give you His body and blood for the forgiveness of your sins. You have His covenant, His testament of faithfulness forever. You have the worship the Divine Service where the Lord comes to serve you in His means of grace. You have the patriarchs: as Paul goes on to say in Romans 9, you are children of Abraham because, like him, you believe in Jesus. God has given all of this to you. Furthermore, He has gathered you into a confession of faith that proclaims this better than any other. We say not arrogantly but factually that no other confession of faith on earth declares the Lord s Gospel more truly and purely than the Lutheran Confession: because no other confession of faith preserves the truth that we are saved by grace alone, as well as the truth that the Lord gives this forgiveness in His Word and His Sacraments. That is what makes Lutheran doctrine unique. Give thanks to the Lord, dear friends, for that solid, scriptural confession of faith. It is a great gift of God indeed. There are, for you, two dangers which emulate the sins mentioned in the text. One affects you as a member of a church body, and the other is far more painfully personal. The first is this: remember how the Israelites of old took those gifts of God and kept them around, yet abandoned them all the same? This is the great temptation within Lutheran churches today. Many Lutheran church bodies have said, We still have the Bible, but we just don t regard it as God s Word anymore. Many Lutheran church bodies have said, We still have the Lutheran Confessions; but we regard them only as history, as what we believed once upon a time. For many Lutherans, Holy Baptism is a nice rite and family affair, but not a miracle in which God makes even the tiniest infant His own forgiven child for Jesus sake. Holy Communion is a way to show that we like each other, not an actual communion with the present Savior for forgiveness and faith. And where Paul s kinsmen would say, We re saved because we re descendants of Abraham, many today will say, I m saved because I m a member of a Lutheran church if only I could remember its name. It is just as easy for sinners today to take God s gifts and use them as emblems for their church, even as they abandon them all the same. It is just as easy for people today to honor God with their lips, while their hearts are far from them. This remains a great concern within our own divided synod. Many pastors and congregations, perhaps with the best of intentions, have adopted church practices and worship practices from popular teachers who publicly deny that the Lord works through the means of grace and so the wonderful doctrine of God s presence among us suffers. As for us, we are known here as a church that holds fast to worship practices that point to the Lord s presence among us in the means of grace. It is not because we re afraid of change or because we worship tradition: it s because Jesus said of His Word and Sacraments, Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age; and we want to stay wear our Lord is. This will, however, become more of a problem in the future: congregations that wish to remain faithful to Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions will face more and more pressure to

regard our doctrine as a souvenir of the old days and to move on to different teachings. May the Lord grant us the strength to stay where we are in His presence and in His grace. That is where everlasting joy is to be found. The other great danger, as I said, is far more painfully personal; and it has to do with Paul saying I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers. The Gospel divides people in this world: there will be those who believe in Jesus and are saved, and there will be those who don t believe in Jesus and are lost. You may have good friends who do not believe. You may have close family members who do not believe. That is a painful burden to bear, and with it comes the affliction of temptation. You will be tempted to change what you believe just enough so that your friends and loved ones can still be in heaven, even if they don t believe in Jesus. You ll be tempted to say that Jesus is one way to heaven, but that there are others; or that really good people will be saved even if they don t believe in Jesus. That is no longer the Gospel, and so it doesn t save. And since you know that, you may be tempted with a far worse temptation: that will be to say, I cannot bear the thought of being separated from this person; so if he will not believe, then I will become an unbeliever. If he will not receive the blessings of salvation, then I will become accursed. Given the deep emotion with which we love dear ones, these are real temptations and I have heard them voiced and seen them followed. Be careful, lest you sacrifice your faith in this manner. Instead, take comfort in these words: God s Word has not failed. He continues to offer His faith and salvation to all who believe. Changing His Word will not help an unbeliever. Denying His Word will not help, either. But His Gospel saves. Read and hear His Gospel, and meditate upon it for your own sake. And as the opportunity arises, share that faith with those who do not believe. There will be times when they are especially ready to hear the Gospel most especially when they are confronting death. Speak to them. Ask one of your pastors to speak to them. Christ has won all the gifts we ve mentioned for them, too, and continues to offer them in His Word. The Lord is faithful, and He will save all who believe. So there are dangers to heed, but do not lose sight of the blessings. Dear friends, you have much to rejoice in. The Lord has given you all sorts of gifts, including His Word, His Sacraments, His promises, His faithfulness; adoption, ongoing strength and a share in Jesus glorious resurrection. All of this is sure and all of this is yours because Jesus became accursed and cut off for you. Because He has paid that price for your sin, He gives you grace and life and salvation. For His sake, you are not accursed and cut off. For His sake, you are forgiven for all of your sins. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen
