Prayer Line: Jo Kusz 651-771-7438 From the Director of Stewardship In today s gospel, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Synagogues were primarily houses of instruction; the synagogue service was comprised of three elements: prayer, the readings of Scripture, and an exposition of it. They were administered by the laity, and geared to the day-today catechesis of the people. By law, wherever there were ten Jewish families, there had to be a synagogue. These neighborhood gathering places were vital to the faith life of the community. Therefore, if a person had a message to preach, the synagogue was an obvious choice of venue. There, Jesus gained a hearing. Following his example, his disciples would do the same after his death and resurrection. Now back to Capernaum Mark tells his readers that the people in the synagogue that day were spellbound because he taught with authority and not like the scribes. Indeed, Jesus spoke with the authority that was intrinsically his by virtue of his identity. Unlike Jesus, the scribes, who had been the recognized interpreters and teachers of the people, spoke with a derivative authority in that they appealed to the sacred texts, legal precedents, and others with expertise in the laws. Mark tells us that the people in the synagogue that day were amazed and wondered who Jesus was. Moreover, he said that Jesus reputation spread throughout the region. Jesus teaching had a profound impact on his audience and still does today. The fathers of the Second Vatican Council remind us that when the holy scriptures are read in Church, it is Christ himself who speaks (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 7). That's why we stand when the Gospel is proclaimed. We stand for Christ who himself is proclaiming it through his minister. Jesus spoke with authority. He spoke from personal conviction. He spoke from his own life experience. As we grow in our understanding of the Word, and as we allow the Word to impact our lives, so too will the way we live our lives come to have an ever-increasing impact on the world around us. Our lives will speak with authority. All Parish Advent Collection THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU!! H.E.O. Faith Formation Yes, we prayed! A little boy rushed to his Faith Formation session last Wednesday evening and requested that all the boys and girls pray for the woman who was hit by a car moments before and was lying on White Bear Avenue surrounded by caring people. The police and paramedics had not yet arrived. (It was later learned the woman died from severe head injuries.) Thanks to that little boy who requested prayers. After praying for her, the children were told to pray a short prayer whenever they see someone hurt, and when hearing ambulance or fire sirens. The feast of St. Blaise is this coming Tuesday, February 3 rd. The children had their throats blessed after listening to his story and seeing a picture of him healing a little child s throat. They also learned that since our voice boxes are in our throats, St. Blaise can help us use KIND voices! There are NO Faith Formation sessions this coming Wednesday, February 4 th. May our Faith Formation families enjoy that free evening! Parents of our 26 First Communicants are reminded to come to ONE of the Parent meetings scheduled for Tuesday, February 3 rd (7:00 pm 8:00 pm) and Saturday, February 7 th (9:00 am 10:00 am). Child care will be provided. Social Concerns - S. Kathy Justice: Economic injustice: The United States, one of the wealthiest nations in the world, has a 14.5 percent poverty rate with 14.5 million people and 1 in 5 children living in poverty. Of the world s highly developed countries, the United States has the largest income inequality. The poor are disproportionately affected by global problems such as climate change, and national challenges such as access to quality education. SOJOURNERS, Feb. 2015 Since his election, Pope Francis has unswervingly pointed to the scandal of poverty as a piercing MORAL challenge for the Church and the whole human community. Charity: For all the clean and good items received this past week, thanks and blessings. The winter jackets, scarves, caps, and mittens are keeping the recipients warm. Each of three families in poverty received a gas card, food items, and a jug of laundry soap. One family also received a donated set of much-needed jumper cables. Urgently needed: A woman with cancer is in need of a twin-sized bed, a kitchen table and 2 chairs, and living room furniture items. If you can help meet these needs, kindly call S. Kathy or the parish office. Rediscover Book Club Join Presentation s Rediscover Book Club six Sunday evenings beginning February 15 through March 22 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center. During Lent we will focus on a book by Jeff Cavins entitled Praise God and Thank Him. This book is about living with God in the challenges of life and discovering a new way to confront obstacles. It s about following God through the storms and resting in him when the winds blow. It s about confronting our limitations and celebrating God s limitless power. The book is available from the Parish Office for $13 per copy. For questions about the book club, contact Jerry or RoseLyn Worrel at 651-770-6363 or register online at www.presentationofmary.org. Preschool News We have passed the halfway mark of the school year and are having a blast in the after-school program! Lately, the school-agers have been inspired to put on numerous fashion shows and plays for the preschoolers, which have been wellreceived with lots of laughs and applause! I love seeing the creativity, imagination, and teamwork these children use to create their different skits, which are completely student-lead. Other creations that we have seen are many Lego villages, each one special, and a small town constructed out of foam blocks, which included a city hall and mayor. There is always plenty going on in the after-school program! 55 Club Lunch When: Tuesday, February 17 Where: Moose Lodge Banquet Room 1946 English Street, Maplewood, MN Time: Cost: Menu: - Ms. Jamie 11:45-12:00 check-in; 12:05 lunch Followed by entertainment and socializing $8.00 per person (all you can eat served buffet style) Fried Chicken Entertainment: Fr.
