SPECIAL REPORT KALIMANTAN CHARA LAM The 10 days spent were truly life changing. I felt that the reasons that God wanted me there was for me to deepen friendships and learn to surrender all to Him. Through the trip, I could feel myself relinquishing control of my life back to Him, and I could feel my walk with Him deepening. God s presence was so tangible there, and my soul was refreshed from soaking in His love. Seeing firsthand the work that He is doing reminds me that His ways are so much greater, and to trust Him with all I am. JOSEPH ONG Despite this not being my first mission trip, it was a very memorable one. I initially thought that it would be a tame trip, but God exceeded my expectations. From the night of stargazing, where God met us, to touching the lives of the kids there. Being in such a homely environment was really something that I hold dear. I also grew in my ministering to the people and was refined by awesome TLBS mates. My heart really grew for the people in the mission field after going to the ends of the earth to preach the good news. JERILYNN YEO Before the trip, one thing that I wanted to do was to love the kids there with the same love that Jesus has shown me. I tried to see the kids through the eyes of Jesus and I saw how each and every child is so precious to God and how He loves them with an everlasting love. And as I strived to love them with a fraction of this abiding love, I too was blessed by the enough-ness of this love God has for me, and how I lacked absolutely nothing in view of His vast love of me. SOH JIA JIE While preparing for this mission trip, I was prompted by God to go with a willing heart. Throughout these 10 days, I could see how a willing heart was very much needed. Our daily routine started with early morning prayer followed by physical labour under the hot sun, after which we played with the kids despite being tired and finally ministering to them during night services. All these could not have been done without our hearts being willing to serve and allowing God to use us as vessels. WHERE HIS FIRE FELL After 3 months in SOM, TLBS sends forth a missions team to put into practice what we have learnt. We headed to Living Waters Village ( LWV ) in West Kalimantan, Indonesia for 10 days and it was a truly eyeopening and heartstirring trip! God met each of us there, and we left the miracle zone revived and refreshed. Through this, the joy of the Lord was indeed my strength! JONATHAN HWANG My experience in this mission trip to LWV was vastly different from the previous mission trips that I have been to. We were integrated into their lifestyle and helped out in the infrastructure development of the village. This mission trip was a step out of my comfort zone, as I do not know how to interact with children. This trip taught me how to extend love and relate to children. Prior to the trip, the Lord showed me that He wanted to work in me a gentle and lowly heart, two virtues I struggle with. At LWV He surfaced many things that He wanted to work on in my life and I am thankful for His continual work of sanctification in me. FABIAN LEW This mission trip was special to me because it was during this trip that I encountered the Holy Spirit and received the gift of tongues. Everything was going smoothly for me during the trip, yet something was missing deep down in my heart. Hence, I said a prayer to God, God, don t let me go home without encountering You. During a worship session, God told me, No one can come before me without humbling himself. As I knelt down, my tongue and eyebrows started to move uncontrollably and I spoke in tongues for the first time. All glory to God! BORNEO INDONESIA W. KALIMANTAN LIVING WATERS VILLAGE JODY LIM One thing that really struck me this trip was the way the children there prayed. Their simple prayers reminded me that our prayers to God are not meant to be elaborate, but that as long as we speak from our hearts, God listens. Another thing I noticed was that prayers did not revolve around themselves. Despite having so little, the children always prayed first for others before themselves. This made me realize that I am called to pray for so much more than my own needs, and that God has called us to intercede for others as well. Aim at ZAPPAR logo to trigger and view more photos on "Kalimantan Report" KOH YUE EN During the mission trip, God revealed Himself to me as a personal God, one whom I was able to converse with and who works in my life. God heard my daily prayers and responded by creating circumstances that allowed me to act in obedience to Him and exercise my faith. I felt His presence throughout the day and saw His hands working in my life. HIZKIA IMANUEL I signed up for this trip so that I could serve in a new place. I was expecting God to work in and through this team. God met us when we were worshipping Him while we were stargazing, working in each of us in different ways. His presence even manifested in 2 of the locals there. We saw God move through us during chapel where we prayed for some of the kids that gave their lives to serve the Lord. This mission trip trained us to be more disciplined and to be a good example to the kids through our actions. RISA LIM This trip to Kalimantan has really been life changing. God has revealed more of Himself to me, and let me experience Him on a whole new level. He reminded me to have a servant s heart, always ready to help others while I was there. LWV is indeed A Miracle Zone as having a sensitive nose and skin, and a weak immune system, I did not once fall sick while I was there. SAMUEL KHAIR The trip to LWV opened my eyes to see God s faithfulness and providence first hand. I was thoroughly impressed by the size of the area and the structures that are constantly being built, knowing that the ministry relies heavily on donations and sponsors for funds. We know for a fact that this is not possible without God s providence. My confidence in God as my provider has heightened and my desire to serve in the mission field has been reinforced as I know God will never fail to provide even in impossible circumstances. 2

LAWRENZ TAN We encountered the Spirit of the Living God there; the fullness of joy manifested in expressions of worship, repentance and revival. We partook in the pleasures of fellowship, insight and renewed strength daily. I learnt how to take a backseat and let the Holy Spirit lead; my focus was the posture of my heart and relationship with Him. Washing gutters taught me that even the dirtiest lives can glorify Him. In my quiet times alone with God, I learnt I m never alone. The God of the miracle zone does not just remain there, He s with us wherever we go. FAITH TAN I learnt that God can only do His work when people s hearts are open. I saw how the people were so hungry for more of God and He was able to move so mightily in their services! God could work through us despite the language barrier. Also, they treated everyone so genuinely and I have been greatly blessed. I feel that God was addressing my heart and making it more tender. I felt like I caught a glimpse of eternity as well where all nations will sing of His name and how we are really living in the last days. ONG WEE KEONG Going for the Kalimantan trip has blessed me tremendously. God has once again left me amazed at what He can do through a team that were primarily people who have just graduated from school or have just completed NS all young and inexperienced. While the Christian phrase God can use your five loaves and two fishes, or phrases along those lines are relatively common, it does not diminish the truth that can be found in that parable. God showed me once again that He can do anything through those who genuinely avail ourselves to Him. BAI ZHIYANG This trip has broadened my perspective on how God has been moving outside of Singapore. Being my first mission trip, this has really solidified my convictions and heart towards missions; it will definitely not be my last trip. Seeing how the villagers are experiencing His presence in radical and tangible ways and hearing the leaders testimonies on how God is currently moving has convinced me that the region is standing at the precipice of a massive revival. God s glory is truly being manifested beyond the four walls of our church; the harvest is plentiful so go forth you labourers! AIM HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS TENG HUI EARM It was an amazing time of experiencing God s love and faithfulness as different events unfolded. More than just listening to how the entire LWV is a testimony of God s providence, it was also a humbling experience to have gotten a chance to interact with the kids in LWV. One thing that struck my heart was their worship; as they exalted His name, many of them encountered God in a very personal way and it was beautiful. This trip was a timely reminder that this is the God that we serve, One that is faithful and will never forsake us. JOEL NG Initially, I had some misgivings going for the Kalimantan mission trip, as I have had an unpleasant experience in missions previously. But I chose to go for it in the end, as a way for me to be open to missions again. Over in LWV, serving alongside fellow brothers and sisters in Christ coming from different church communities, and interacting with the local people there, God has really showed me that small things may not necessarily be insignificant, that we can bless people immeasurably if we have the heart to give. And through this, God has opened my heart to missions again. faced it in me. It was truly amazing that God has rekindled that desire in my heart and through confirmations from fellow mission trip friends, I came to realise that God truly knows the desires of our hearts even better than ourselves. MEDSABAN VIRIYAVAREE Before the mission trip even began, God started to teach me certain lessons. Although it was God who had instructed me to sign up for the trip, I faced many roadblocks. However, through these I learnt how to focus on God and His grace, and I knew He would come through for me; the only thing I had to do was trust in Him. During the trip, I was amazed by what God was doing for the ministry in Kalimantan! I saw, that no matter our background, we are all God s children and He has led us into His victory. EDNA TEE Kalimantan was a memorable and eye-opening experience for me. God showed me through the children who were living in harmony despite their different backgrounds what it meant to love one another just as Christ loves us. I also learnt that the small things we do for or with the children like playing, drawing or dancing with them or visiting their houses were the things that impacted them the most. These small things proved to be the best way for us to show them the love of Christ. SARAH ARUMUGAM Struggling to connect what we were doing to ministry, I asked God what was His purpose for us there, wanting some sort of deeper connection with the locals or a time of spiritually ministering to them. By divine intervention, the opportunities for ministry came each day after that. When I learnt that this was a first for such trips by TLBS, and how the spiritual stirring has been increasing in the months before our arrival, it seemed that God was really preparing the land for something greater. More importantly, this has taught me to trust in God s timing and agenda. CALEB YOONG When I first reached LWV one of the things that stood out to me was God s faithfulness, providing for all their needs since the start. I m inspired by the hearts of the missionaries as they put God first in all they do, even amidst their never ending workload. Through interacting with the children, I ve learnt the importance of always being connected to God and knowing what is on His heart for everything I do. I ve also seen the Father Heart of God in a greater measure as we tried to love the kids just as He loves us. RUTH TAN I went to Kalimantan with the intention to be a blessing, and also to put all the head knowledge I ve gained through TLBS into practice. However, after the trip, I felt immensely blessed instead. The trip was incredibly fruitful, and it allowed us to encounter God and experience God s grace together. I ve received abundantly, not only from the children there but also from those in the team. Everyone had such a great heart to serve, and would do their part in any way that they could. This trip has been really special and I m going to miss it very much! CHEN WEN HAO The trip to Kalimantan for me was refreshing. It felt like a final assignment from TLBS; to live out what you ve learnt in the 3 months spent in Bible school. Also, through this trip, it was amazing to see God ministering to both LWV and the TLBS team, not wasting anything or any time in His perfect agenda. I ve been left in awe of how wonderful our God is. Words fail to describe His divinity, His sovereignty, His perfectness and His love for all His children. Puji Tuhan, praise God, for He is forever deserving of our worship. JUN OHATA I wasn t expecting God to speak to me about something so personal during this trip. I had been running away from a desire for the past 2 years, and God resur3

SOCIAL WORKERS An Interview with William Chua, Trinity Methodist Church and Alan Yong, Christ Methodist Church Interviewed by: Kalista Wan, Chara Lam, Jonathan Hwang and Koh Yue En REACHING OUT TO THE BROKEN WITH THE FATHER S LOVE BROTHER ALAN YONG AND BROTHER WILLIAM CHUA HAVE BOTH RETIRED, HAVE ATTENDED SOM 2017 TERM 1 AND ARE NOW SERVING IN THE SOCIAL SERVICE SECTOR. BROTHER ALAN WORKS AS A COUNSELLOR IN ONE HOPE CENTRE (OHC), HELPING PEOPLE WITH PROBLEM GAMBLING BEHAVIOUR AND DEBTS. BROTHER WILLIAM IS INVOLVED IN MULTIPLE VOLUNTARY WELFARE ORGANISATIONS, WORKING ACROSS DEMOGRAPHICS TO HELP THOSE WHO NEED HELP. Q1: What motivated you to enter full-time ministry? Alan: I was at a crossroads in serving the Lord, and I met a church mate who asked if I wanted to join the Committee of Social Concerns. I was invited to an Annual General Meeting dinner where 2 OHC directors shared about the Centre. I felt that this was a divine arrangement and took up the opportunity as a fulltime job counsellor at OHC, fulfilling my desire to live out Isaiah 61:1. William: Through my frequent travels throughout Asia, my eyes were opened to various forms of injustice, exploitation and suffering. My heart ached for these people, and it awakened a desire in me to take action. Therefore, after being in the marketplace for almost 30 years, I left my job to work in the social service sector. Q2: What do you do in your ministry? Alan: OHC provides counselling service to people who are addicted to gambling specifically. My counselling work includes helping counselees to clarify their thoughts and emotions concerning debts, creditors harassments, root cause of gambling and borrowings. They would also be counselled on personal and familial issues. The end goal is to bring reconciliation and restoration of love, peace and joy for the counselee and their loved ones. William: What I do can be summed up in an acronym -- DRD: Defend, Rescue and Deliver, which is from Psalms 82:3-4. It is my mission to defend the weak and the fatherless, providing a voice for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Rescue is a very intentional action to help others. While I may not be able to solve all their problems, it is important to try. The last D is to deliver the needy from the wicked. Intentional steps need to be taken to provide a way out for the oppressed. Q3: Are there any testimonies that you could share? Alan: Based on our records, in the past 4 years, 54 of our clients received Salvation. What is amazing is that we have peer supporters within the group who would bring their non-christian peers to their churches, extending God s love to them. In this OHC Community, members journey together, guide, care, encourage and support one another. They become helpers to the new seekers. William: I have worked with children who had to take on a parental role in the household. These children had to juggle schoolwork, household chores and take care of their siblings at a very young age. Consequently, they become jaded and bitter. In such cases, we have to act quickly and take them out of that situation. I am also on call 24/7 to my cases, and have received calls at all hours seeking help. Q4: How has your time in TLBS helped you? Alan: I had the intention to attend Bible school several years ago as I needed to grow in my spiritual life. My spiritual life has been nourished and nurtured at TLBS. I have a sense of being renewed, regenerated and transformed. I am reminded that only applied truth and knowledge will bring transformation. William: TLBS taught me the importance of the Father s heart. I can do a lot of good things without the Father s heart, but without bringing the Father s love to those I help, it will come to naught. Whatever I do must start and end with God; He must be involved in the entire process. I have also learnt about submitting to authority. 4

Q5: Do you have any advice to Christians who want to serve in such a field or simply want to help their friends? Alan: For gamblers, never lend them money. They need to learn how to be debt free and lending them money does not help nor solve their problems. Rather, teach them to look at their problem as an opportunity to learn how to manage their finances and try to get them to be accountable to you. You could also refer them to counselling agencies such as OHC. William: In whatever you do, go with a heart and a passion to love the ones you will be serving. Additionally, don t forget to protect yourself -- never meet someone at his or her house, meet at a neutral, public place. Through the years, I have also learnt not to expect gratitude. I do what I do, not for the thanks or recognition, but out of love and obedience. Q6: Through your work, how has your faith in God grown? Alan: My intimacy with and trust in God has deepened over the years, especially through my ministry with OHC. God has shown Himself to be merciful and compassionate towards those who have sought help. He has opened my eyes to His great love towards the downtrodden, and I have felt His love for me even as I help others. William: God has shown me what it means to love everyone regardless of their circumstances. God has revealed prejudices in my heart, and liberated me from fear. He has also demonstrated how great and unconditional His love for us is. We thank Alan and William and bless them. WWW.BELIEVERMUSIC.COM MY WORSHIP JOURNEY 2 YEARS AFTER TUNG LING CULTIVATING A HEART OF WORSHIP Before I enrolled into TLBS, I had always assumed that the act of worship was a duty for the Christian believer an act of reverence a servant would be expected to pay to his master. For my younger self, worship was a chore, albeit a necessary and righteous one. It was therefore fortunate (or perhaps divinely ordained), that the topic of my first module at TLBS was on the Heart of Worship. The main emphasis of our lecturer was clear from the start worship is both a reflection and cultivation of the believer s relationship with God. And although our worship is to be purely focused on the Almighty, that is not to say that we do not receive anything from it. I learned how worship was not a one-way channel between us and God, but instead, similar to how a child would enjoy spending time with their father, a way for us to experience His presence with gratitude and exultation. In short, I came to understand that worship was a privilege, and that I should be thankful for it. ISSUES OF THE HEART Yet, over the next two years, although my perspective on worship had changed somewhat, my heart was still far from the right place. There were moments when I would groan inwardly if the worship leader started a song I disliked because the chorus sounded bad or the lyrics were bland, and times where I raised my eyebrows when someone sang off-key or played the wrong note. FACEBOOK.COM/BELIEVERMUSIC HOTLINE: 6323 0304 By Matthew Loh Student of SOM 2014 T2 Marcom Assistant, Believer Music It was pretentious of me, and I knew it, but somehow (and I am ashamed to admit this now), I managed to defend my thoughts with the justification that if the King of Kings was to be worshipped, it should be through something that was at least half-decent to the ears. IDENTIFYING MY PRIDE This year, as I continued to observe how people engaged in Worship, God began to show me the glaring issues in my way of thinking. I had taken up a job at a local music training centre called Believer Music which teaches worship music. As a new employee, I sat through its Beginner modules to learn more about the school. The students in these lessons, being total novices, initially sounded less than ideal when they worshipped in class. But I soon realized that they didn t allow the inferiority of their musical skills to affect how they worshipped. It didn t matter to them, and it doesn t matter to God. I was suddenly aware then that while I had been telling myself worship was an act of humility, I had allowed pride to swell up within myself at the very same time. Instead of keeping my eyes on God, I had let petty issues distract me from what was truly important. I vowed never to let that happen again. Looking back, I am grateful to the Lord for opening my eyes in regards to worship. There will definitely be more for me to learn, and I pray that He continues to teach me to guard my heart and mind. 5

M y name is Remy, and I was born and raised in the Philippines, along with my 5 older siblings. Our parents were farmers and we had no choice but to help them in the rice fields when we were younger. In my village, basic necessities like food and clothing were scarce and many had to go barefoot. However, I dreamt of going to a secondary school in a city 12 km away, God. He has poured out His favour upon our lives, blessing us with CPF despite us being on Employment Visas. Indeed, He has opened the floodgates of heaven and blessed us with a house of our own after only 3 years of employment here, and later we were able to upgrade our HDB flat to a 2 story condominium. In order to be good stewards of His favour, we have set apart our home to be a shelter for visiting pastors, OVERTAKEN BY GOD S FAVOUR In 1992, my father passed away. At that time, I was in my second year of university, studying Electronics and Communications Engineering, and I realized that without him, I may not be able to continue my university education. I begged my brothers to continue supporting me, and prayed earnestly that God would provide for my education. True enough, He was faithful and never failed to provide. I moved to Manila in April 1995 after graduation, and started working as an engineer. At the same time, I continued serving God in a church where He planted me to bear fruit for His glory. For the past 16 years, my husband and I have lived and worked in Singapore, where we have committed to give generously to the work of 6 STAY ING IN TOUCH W ITH OUR A LUM N I ACROSS THE BOR DERS By Liu Shangzhi P By Remy Reynaldo, Mount Olives Church of God as I wanted to wear school shoes! His daily strengthening continues, His assurances secure. Thanksgiving to our Lord, for bringing me into this land, rich in the historical inheritance of faith, for His leading, for learning how to walk with Him daily in university. His grace abounds in my failures. In His presence is fullness of joy. He did a tremendous work at Tung Ling and His work continues by His faithfulness. He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 Today, my family serves the Lord at Mount Olives Church of God. My husband sits on the church board and leads worship, my son plays guitar in worship and my daughter is in the dance ministry. Personally, my calling is to take care of the Filipino community around me, and to influence them for the Lord. I try to introduce them to my God whenever the opportunity arises. During the last 3 months in SOM at TLBS, God has drawn me aside and revealed Himself to me. It has been the most enriching part of my Christian walk, and it was truly an awesome experience. All glory to God! Liu Shangzhi was a student in SOM 2016, Term 2. He is currently studying in Cambridge University in the UK.
