3610 Dundee Rd. Northbrook, IL 60062 www.templebeth-el.org Volume 237 November 2017 Cheshvan/Kislev 5778 Dear Friends, FROM THE RABBI S STUDY Rabbi Sidney M. Helbraun A favorite reading in our prayer book is a quote found just before the Amidah: Pray as if everything depended on God. Act as if everything depended on you. While this teaching inspires in a number of ways, it reminds me of the dual nature of prayer, which can be both a means of directing our needs and concerns outward, asking for God s direct intervention in our affairs or the events of the world, and a means of directing our needs and concerns inward, reminding us of the power that we hold in our own hands. Prayer may bring help from above, or inspire help from within, giving us the strength and courage to live up to our highest hopes and ideals. To a certain extent sermons can act in a similar way. They can inspire us to turn our prayers to God, or they may serve as a spark towards action, reminding us of the power that resides in our hands: our ability to be actors in the events of the world. My High Holiday sermons encompassed four topics, calling on us to develop a passion for living Jewishly, reminding us of the Torah s call for how we should treat the stranger, asking us to have the strength to transform ourselves, and calling upon us to strengthen our engagement and build an honest relationship with Israel. In the weeks since, I have been asked if there are ways to transform these ideas into action. Here are a few: A year ago a group of temple members formed an Immigration team, which educated our community at a Shabbat service, and called us to participate in a campaign, asking our governor to sign the Trust Act. This year they have explored opportunities for our congregation to sponsor a refugee family. They presented their research to our Board, which authorized a town hall meeting to take place on Sunday November 5, at 10:15 am, at which time we will meet with a representative from HIAS the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. That person will tell us the requirements of becoming a sponsor, and answer our questions. This project can only move forward if it is supported by our community. Your presence is needed if Temple Beth-El is to help an immigrant family build a new life in America. When it comes to Israel, we are fast approaching the deadline for our April trip. The truth is, a congregational trip not only builds connections to Israel, it creates bonds of friendship and support among those who travel together. Please contact me if you have questions about joining us. Finally, I encourage you to look into the work of three important Israeli organizations. First, the Israel Religious Action Center, www.irac.org, the public and legal advocacy arm of the Reform Movement in Israel, which seeks to advance pluralism in Israeli society and to defend the freedoms of conscience, faith and religion. IRAC advocates on behalf of a broadly inclusive Israeli democracy. Second, the Association of Reform Zionist of America, www.arza.org, the international network of progressive Jewish voices, which works to build a better Israel, and strengthen the Reform movement in Israel. And third, Hebrew Union College www.huc.edu, the educational arm of the Reform movement, which is ordaining Israeli rabbis to build a Reform Jewish movement in Israel on its campus in Jerusalem. As Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, the first president of Hebrew Union College stated when the college was founded in Cincinnati in 1871, a religious movement will only prosper in a country when its leaders are native born. HUC has been training Israel s next generation of leaders, and is now on the cusp of tremendous growth. Friends, we ve spent a great deal of time praying for change in our world. Now is the time for us to listen to our own prayers and be inspired to act on them. Together we can do great things. 2 CANTOR S NOTES Cantor Faryn H. K. Rudnick, ACC This year marks my fifth year serving the Temple Beth-El community as cantor. After 5 years, I can honestly say that I feel as blessed today as I did when I began my tenure here in 2013. Each day, I enjoy the work I do, I enjoy the people with whom I work, and I relish in the way this community embraces music and my musical vision for the synagogue. A large part of my musical vision for Temple Beth-El has been to bring in outstanding artists -in-residence, and each year that I have been here we have been blessed to host an artist in residence. We have hosted Sababa, Michelle Citrin, Cantor Benjie Ellen Schiller, and this year, on April 13 th and 14 th, we will host Noah Aronson and his band. Noah studied Jazz Composition and Piano at the Berkley College of Music and was the composer-in-residence at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA, where he co-produced 4 albums of Jewish communal music. As a solo artist, Noah has released 2 full length albums, and the music from these albums can be heard in camps and communities across the world (including Temple Beth-El). Noah can be found leading worship at the URJ Biennial and the ACC/GTM annual convention, and he serves on the faculty of the annual Hava Nashira and Shabbat Shira workshops held at OSRUI, as well as Shirei Chaggia held annually in London, England. Noah lives in New York City and is Cantor s Notes currently serving as the Creative Director of Sacred Music NY, a non-profit organization that organizes concerts and events around New York City bringing together spiritual musicians from diverse backgrounds to inspire interfaith dialogue and social change. Noah is well-known for his musicality, his creativity, and his engaging, playful, and soulful spirit. I had the distinct honor of working with Noah at the ACC/GTM convention in 2014, where we were paired together to lead a Shacharit service. Together with another colleague, we crafted a spiritual and prayerful service. Noah was generous with his time and spirit, and extremely generous in sharing his talents and music with us and the entire community. Noah Aronson is paving a new path for Jewish music and Jewish musicians around the world. In the same way that Debbie Friedman revolutionized the sound of Jewish music in the 1970 s and 80 s, Noah is taking Jewish music and the Jewish community into the new century and into a new and exciting place. Noah will be with us on Friday, April 13 th and Saturday, April 14 th, and his band will join him on Saturday night, April 14 th, for Havdalah and a concert. Please mark your calendars to be at one or all of Noah s appearances here at Temple Beth-El, and check your mail and email in the coming months for opportunities to support our artist-in-residence series and for a full listing of weekend events with Noah. For more information about Noah, or to hear his music, check out: http://www.noaharonson.com/ 2017 18 LEADERSHIP CONTACTS Committee Responsibilities Meetings Chairperson Religious Activities (RAC) Finance House Clergy, religious, services and High Holiday policies. Member News 9 Meet Nancy and George Vizer Knowing that we leave George s sister s name as a legacy for the next generation of children playing on the playground, with the joy that Olga never had an opportunity to experience, is heartwarming. This article is the tenth installment in a series of discussions with donors to the Legacy & Endowment (L&E) Program. Its purpose is to share insights about their connection to Temple Beth-El and why their generous support of the L&E Program is important to them. In this article, meet Nancy and George Vizer, of Glenview, long-time dedicated TBE members, who share their thoughts with our membership. 1. Can you give us some background on your connection to Temple Beth-El? Upon relocating to the Chicago area in 2001, we decided to reside on the North Shore due to the rich Jewish life that was evident here. Then we embarked on a search for a synagogue which reflected our background, upbringing and views. We explored all our options, and after three years of exploration and one false start, we settled on Temple Beth-El. Our choice has been confirmed and reinforced ever since. 2. What are some of your most meaningful memories as members of the TBE community? Unlike other synagogues we tried on for size, ever since we met Rabbi Helbraun, the senior leadership and other members of the congregation, we truly felt welcome and accepted, which truly meant so much to us. Our best memory is the trip to Israel with both Rabbis Helbraun, and a wonderful group of congregants. We made new lifelong friends on the trip. We have also especially enjoyed the retreats that we have gone on, where we have enjoyed Shabbat in the true sense of withdrawing from day-to-day life in the company of good friends old and new. 3. Why did you take a leadership role in the Legacy and Endowment program? We both have a close connection to many Holocaust survivors and victims. Because of this, the meaning of Judaism holds a somewhat different perspective than perhaps others in our community. Seeing Judaism slowly watered down gives us a great deal of heartache. Our hope is that keeping the Jewish faith alive and thriving is each of our collective responsibility. 4. What difference do you think your gift will make to the future of TBE? Having lost George s sister, who never got a chance to experience growing up, and with the opportunity to live a full life, has stayed with us throughout our adult lives. We need to celebrate our future generations and give them an opportunity to pay it forward. L dor v dor. 5. What advice would you give to others who are considering making a gift to the Legacy and Endowment program? We all know deep inside that giving is better than receiving. Giving our synagogue an opportunity to serve the next generation and an opportunity for those less fortunate to remain part of the wonderful Temple Beth-El family is a heartwarming feeling. Knowing that we leave George s sister s name as a legacy for the next generation of children playing on the playground, with the joy that Olga never had an opportunity to experience, is heartwarming. 6. Please share any other thoughts and insights about your relationship with the TBE community and the importance of your L&E gift to the congregation. We hope that Olga s story may inspire the teachers at Temple Beth-El as they educate new generations about how precious life, and the legacies we leave, are. To learn how you can support the Temple Beth-El Legacy & Endowment Program, contact: Jill Weininger: jillweininger@icloud.com 847-815-3539 or Janice Hadesman: jhadesman@templebeth-el.org 847-205-9982 ext. 211

Men s Club Update The TBE Men s Club had a great start to our programming year. The BIG Breakfast, hosted by The Men s Club for our school parents, drew more than 150 members who enjoyed a great meal following the 5K Run/Walk. On September 24th The Men s Club held our 17th Annual Golf Outing at Sportsman s Country Club. The outing featured 65 golfers and more than 100 people for The BIG Dinner. THANK YOU to all of our sponsors and supporters for making this our most successful outing ever! The golf outing is our one and only fundraiser of the year. It funds all of our programming and allows The Men s Club to make a significant difference for our congregation. October was also packed with Men s Club events. First, our annual Sukkah building & cook-out on 10/1. More than 20 guys pretended to be carpenters and eventually got the Sukkah built. It was an effort worthy of King David! Thanks guys for your time and hard work. On 10/9 The Men s Club hosted it s first Boys Night Out event of the year. Monday Night Football (Bears v. Vikes) at North Branch Pizza & Burger Co. with 30 guys. Our next event is Sunday Brunch on Nov. 19 with guest speaker Amy Stoken of the American Jewish Committee. Bagel & Lox at 9:30 am. Amy will speak at 10:00 am on the issues facing our college students with harassment on campuses. Have you joined us at Men s Club programs? If not, then NOW is a great time to meet people, check it out and see what you ve been missing. See you soon. 16 Tikkun Olam SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE Elaine Cooper Koffman The Social Action Committee (SAC) holds an event at Robineau Residence at least once a month. On September 13, SAC member Stewart Schram and I led a spirited game of Wheel of Fortune, played with a real wheel and fake money. At the end of the game, the residents who won the most play money received a small amount of real money. Our next Robineau visit will be on October 11. SAC member Marcia Kanarek organizes the Temple Beth-El (TBE) volunteers who assist at the monthly birthday parties that take place at Gidwitz Place on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:15 to 3:15 pm. Andrea Brown volunteered on September 13. To participate in this good deed, which is appropriate for children of all ages, please call or email Marcia (847-426-1954 or imokydoky@aol.com). On Sunday morning, September 3, TBE had six volunteers at the Uptown Café: Tracey Coleman and her adorable twinagers Madelyn and Samantha and three SAC members Doris Guthman, Ben Koffman, and I. Volunteers, who must be at least 12 years old, work from 5:30 to 7:00 pm on weekdays and from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Sundays. I am currently arranging TBE s Uptown Cafe dates for 2018. In memory of their father and grandfather, SAC member Joanne Gold and her daughter Rachel created and run a project in which people make fleece blankets for others who could use being Blanketed by Love. On September 11, four SAC volunteers and six Sisterhood volunteers made blankets to go with the Maot Chitim boxes that would be delivered by TBE volunteers. On October 1, Helen Melnick s seventh grade religious school class made blankets for Rabbi Helbraun and Cantor Rudnick to leave as gifts when they visit people who are ill or recovering from surgery. Rabbi Helbraun spoke to the students about how well the blankets have been received. The students (with a little assistance from Mandy Herlich, Joanne, Helen, and SAC members Lil Cohen and me) made fifty blankets. Please contact me (847-679-8525 or BennettK@aol.com) if you would like to participate in any of our activities or if you have ideas about other things we might do to help repair the world. Are you unsure of what to buy? Why not purchase a 5-Year Mazel Tov Savings Bond? Prices begin at $100. Pick up an informational sheet at the Temple or log on to israelbonds.com. Mention Temple Beth-El on your form. Questions? Contact the Israel Bond Office 312-558-9400. BUY ISRAELI GOODS - Maimonides taught us that the highest form of helping people is to support them so they can help themselves. A great way to do that without incurring any additional costs is to make the purchase of Israeli products part of our regular shopping. Israeli products that are readily available from local merchants include food, wine, women s apparel, fashion designer jewelry, baby and child apparel, hardware, health and beauty aids, footwear, toys and games, flowers, and more! Available products, and the local stores that are likely to stock them, can be found at: www.buyisraelgoods.org (BIG). TBE Monthly Tzedakah Collections A tzedakah box is located in the foyer. In November, tzedakah will go to Keshet, which provides help to children who have special needs or are at risk. Checks should be made payable to Temple Beth-El and mailed to the Temple office marked tzedakah. As always, we thank you for your continuous and generous support. Keep an eye out for all upcoming opportunities at: http://bit.lytbetikkumolam SHALVA Collects Cellphones, ipads and ipods Temple Beth-El has been collecting cell phones for SHALVA for many years. The phones are collected, then shipped to Shelter Alliance, a recycling operation in Florida. They pay SHALVA according to the blue book value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones sent to them every year, they wipe clean all personal data and either refurbish the phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $4,000-5,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help SHALVA clients. ipads and ipods are now also accepted. Share ALL Your Good News Share the news of any new additions to your family. Tell us about the birth of your child or grandchild, engagements, weddings and anything else. We want to wish you, our Temple members, a mazel tov, and notify the congregation via email. In addition, babies will receive a gift from our Temple and JUF s J Baby program. Our clergy would love to name the baby at a Shabbat service. Please contact Joanne Gold to share your good news at 847-205-9982 ext. 202 or jgold@templebeth-el.org.

This permanent remembrance will give you great comfort for many years and will serve as a reminder of the place your loved one held in your life. A permanent memorial plaque is displayed bearing the name and yahrzeit date on the Memorial Wall outside the Sanctuary. Your loved one s name will also be included on the weekly yahrzeit list outside the Sanctuary on the anniversary of their passing and be read at our Friday evening Shabbat Service. The contribution to memorialize your loved one with a permanent yahrzeit plaque requires a donation of $750. If you have any questions, please call Joanne Gold (847) 205-9982 ext. 202.
