the Happenings July 7, 2013 at St. Philip Seventh Sunday after Pentecost Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. Vacation Bible School Starts Tomorrow! It s finally here! After the months of planning and preparation, Vacation Bible School will begin tomorrow, Monday, July 8th, at 9am! And what a fun-filled week it promises to be! Four lively and enthusiastic counselors from Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp will lead the kids through songs and activities, based on this year s camp theme of Blessed to be a Blessing. Please see page 7 for a peek at who the counselors are, and where they come from. The counselors are a major part of the fun and success of Vacation Bible School, but without the willing and wholehearted participation of the congregation, it just wouldn t happen. It may take a village to raise a child, but it truly takes a congregation to run Vacation Bible School! Thanks go out to everyone who has already donated supplies and materials to VBS. The congregation of St. Philip is always so generous. If you haven t yet donated anything, you still have time. Simply check the Supplies Needed list on the VBS table in the narthex, and then bring your donation to the church tomorrow. Thank you! A really BIG thank you to all who have volunteered to help; especially our young tweens and teens! Your help is so appreciated! (And if you know anyone else who is interested in helping, we can never have too many helping hands!) Thanks also go out to co-coordinators Kyle Pitts and Angela Seep. Since last year they have been working on doing what it took to make this year s program a success. Please be sure to thank them for all their hard work. Questions? Contact Kyle at kylehillary@gmail.com; email Angela at aseep1175@hotmail.com. On Thursday evening at 7pm, everyone needs to come to church to see and hear the kids and staff as they showcase all that they have done through the week. It s a guaranteed make you smile and tap your toes experience! Mark your calendars! Take a look at our new website at www.stphilip-co.org

WORSHIP Worship Notes - July 7, 2013 INTRODUCTION God is the source of our nourishment. Our Lord s invitation to "take and eat... take and drink" is a repeated one. In the holy eucharist, in the word read and proclaimed, in the assembly of the people of God, the dominion of God has come near. Rejoice! Your name is written in heaven. FIRST READING: Isaiah 66:10-14 Those who returned from the exile found that the hopes for the glorious restoration of Judah were not completely fulfilled. For these disappointed people, the prophet envisions salvation in the image of a nursing woman. Mother Jerusalem and a mothering God remind the community how they are sustained and supported. SECOND READING: Galatians 6: [1-6] 7-16 In the close of his letter to the Galatians, Paul encourages them to live as people made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Here Paul offers practical advice about how believers exercise common concern for one other in "the family of faith." GOSPEL: Luke 10:1-11, 16-20 Jesus commissions harvesters and laborers to go where he would go and do what he would do. Risking hardship and danger in exchange for the experience of great joy, they offer peace and healing as signs that the reign of God is near. Free Nursery Childcare The nursery is open during worship services and education hour for infants and young children. Altar Flowers The altar is blessed with flowers this week donated by Anne & Tom Henning in honor of their 28 th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Just and gracious God, C: we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. P: The apostle Paul assures us: When were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross. Jesus says to you, Your sins are forgiven. GOLF TOURNAMENT Gearing Up and Getting Ready Our 2 nd Annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction is scheduled for Saturday, September 21 st, and we are gearing up and getting ready! The proceeds from the event will pay for our new exterior sign, which will be placed on the property so it can be viewed by both eastbound and westbound traffic on Ken Caryl. The sign, which will be LED, will allow us to more effectively reach out to our community, and tell them of all the events happening here at St. Philip. The tournament informational brochure is available at the Welcome Center kiosk. Be sure to pick one up and start working on developing your foursome! Lunch is provided as part of the golf registration fee. Monetary sponsorships are also available for each of the golf holes, as well as each golf cart. Please consider being a sponsor. The silent auction will be greatly enhanced and expanded this year. Items will be set up and bidding will begin on Rally Sunday, September 8 th. You will have the 8 th and the following Sunday to consider and bid on items before the tournament. On the 21 st, all items will be taken over to Raccoon Creek so the golfers can bid on them. But that s not the end! After the tournament, auction items will be once more brought to the church, and you will have one last chance to get in your winning bid before the auction closes at noon on Sunday, September 22 nd. You do not have to be present to win. Winners will be notified via email on Monday, September 23, and prizes may be claimed at the church office. If you have any items you wish to donate for the silent auction, please contact Linda Goodnough. Hand-made or one of a kind items are always popular and most welcome. Contact Linda Goodnough in the church office at lgoodnough@stphilip-co.org or call 303.979.4491 for more information. See you in September! www.stphilip-co.org 9

The Story READ THE STORY. EXPERIENCE THE BIBLE. Have you wanted to get involved in a Bible study that will lead you into a closer relationship with God? Then we have just the one for you! Beginning in the fall of this year, St. Philip will initiate a new comprehensive Bible study called The Story. COMMUNITY CARE EVANGELISM Blood Drive Coming in September On Friday, September 13, the Children's Hospital blood mobile will visit St. Philip with a goal of collecting 32 pints of whole blood for their young patients. Remember that a donor is eligible when at least 56 days have lapsed since her/his last whole blood donation, which allows time for the donor s blood supply to be replenished. That means that July 19 is a critical date if you wish to donate on September 13. Sign-ups for the St. Philip blood drive will begin soon. Stay well, save your blood, and don t schedule your vacation to malaria-infested destinations until AFTER September 13! ReStore Needs Volunteers The Habitat for Humanity ReStore (7890 W. Quincy Ave.) needs volunteers to help with customer service and with the Metals Recycling Program. Habitat for Humanity works through God and with people from all walks of life to build homes, community and hope. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the mission is fulfilled. For more information email Alice Goble at alice@habitatmetrodenver.org, or call her at 303.596.5289. Sign Up Now for Family Promise! Sign up now for the next Family Promise rotation, July 21-28. The sign-up sheets are available at the Family Promise table in the narthex. During the week of July 21-28, our Family Promise team will provide food, transportation, and shelter for several homeless families from the Denver area. Please consider joining our team and helping out a family that needs a little help getting through a difficult time. We are always looking for new team members! For more information, please contact team captain Bob Delong at 303.973.3996. Watch Your Giving Grow! Lutheran World Relief is offering a wonderful opportunity for you to double your giving dollars. If you donate to Lutheran World Relief between now and August 31, 2013, your gift will be doubled up to $171,000. LWR helps people around the world by supporting farmers and agriculture, responding to emergencies and disasters, enhancing water access and quality, and improving health and livelihood. Recently, in San Luis, Nicaragua, LWR built a new well and rehabilitated seven other wells so that people living there can now have clean drinking water and water for household gardens. There are three ways to donate: by mail to Lutheran World Relief at PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061; by telephone, 1.800.597.5972; or by placing your donation in the offering plate with a designation that it is for Lutheran World Relief.
