Arnold Kiwanis, Tuesday, February 26, 12pm, Ponderosa, Richardson Rd. at Jeffco Blvd. South County Spotlight During January, our South County Spotlight shines on Carla Rowell. Carla joined our club in 2006. Carla was the first Oakville HS Key Club Faculty Advisor, serving from 1996-2002 and was largely responsible for the success of the Key Club from the start. She has worked on the Civic Character Award Committee, cochaired our Kiwanis One Day Activity, and served as president during the 2008-09 Administrative Year. She has also served on the Scholarship Committee helping to judge the applicants, and helps with Trivia Night, Peanaut Days, co-chairs the Terrific Kids Committee, etc. Carla received the Hixson Fellowship Award in 2010. Carla has had several health issues recently and hasn t been able to participate as she would like, but she is getting better and
Volume 34:14 January 9, 2019 Page 3 is looking forward to playing a more active role with the club again. 22 nd Annual Trivia Night Seven Holy Founders Church Hall January 26, 2019 Our 22 nd Annual Trivia Night will be held on Saturday evening, January 26, 2019 at Seven Holy Founders Church Hall. The doors will open at 6pm with the games beginning at 7pm. As usual, we will have attendance prizes, theme baskets to raffle off, and scratch off tickets that could make you a multi-millionaire by the end of the evening! This is our major fundraiser of the year and we sell out every year, so don t hesitate. Mail your reservation and check in early. Member News Lee Bodendieck will have shoulder replacement surgery in a couple of weeks. Please keep Lee in your thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery and a full and speedy recovery. Sherry Dodson, Steve s wife, had surgery earlier this week. Please keep Sherry in your thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery and a full and speedy recovery. 2019 Calendars As you receive 2019 calendars in the mail from various companies and charities (any size and shape), please bring any you do not need to our meetings and give them to Sherry Stevenson. She will give them to the clients of the food pantry where she volunteers. Restaurant Fundraiser Bandana s BBQ We are holding our first Restaurant fundraiser of the year at Bandana s BBQ Restaurant, 11750 Gravois Rd. (between I-270 and Lindbergh) next week on Monday & Tuesday, January 14 & 15, from 11am - 9pm. Simply present the attached coupon to your wait staff and our club will receive a percentage of your total bill. All of our profits go to the children s charities that both we, and Kiwanis International, support. Thank you for your help in Serving the Children of the World. _ Kiwanis Meeting Outstanding Students January 9, 2019 14 members present and 8 guests present: Mia Adams, Outstanding Student from Bernard Middle School, Pam & Dean Adams her mother & father, Lauren Cumming, Bernard Middle School Asst. Principal; John Wolf, Mehlville School District Public Relations; Ian Furgeson, Outstanding Student from Green Park Lutheran School, Alice Furgeson his mother, and Joshua Dixon, Green Park Lutheran School teacher. Roy reminded us that we ll have a Flying Squadron to Crestwood-Sunset Hills Kiwanis Club tomorrow. January 14 & 15 is our restaurant fundraiser at Bandana s. January 28 is Reading is Fun. April 13 is the date for Feed My People s Trivia Night. Sherry has asked us not to bring any more calendars after February 1. Rick reported that over $83M has been collected for Project ELIMINATE as of November 30, and there are only 14 more countries that need MNT eliminated. Rick

He also said that 45,807 Terrific Kids bumper stickers have been purchased from Kiwanis International during 2017-2018. February 22-24 is the Winter Conference for MO-ARK to be held in Bentonville, AR. Roy introduced Mia Adams, our Outstanding Student from Bernard Middle School. She is the president of the National Junior Honor Society, a member of Student Council, Social Club, Drama Club, Band, and Book Battle, which is her favorite because she loves to read. She bowls for the Oakville High School team. She s very active in her church, and is going to her first National Youth Gathering in Minnesota this coming July. She plans on going to Oakville High School and then to Southeast Missouri State University and become an interior designer. Roy then introduced Ian Ferguson, our Outstanding Student from Green Park Lutheran School. Ian thanked the Kiwanians, the teachers and staff at Green Park for equipping, teaching, and helping him grow, and his parents for taking great care to raise him. He also thanked God for all He has done for him. Ian serves at school as the captain of the robotics team, in which he led and coached his schoolmates to compete in the LEGO robotics competition. He s a member of the National Junior Honor Society. In sports, he s the co-captain of the soccer team. Outside of school he s working towards his second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He s a member of the Leadership Team at his Dojang. He enjoys playing the piano and performing. He serves his church as an acolyte and has performed in the annual Christmas Boar s Head Festival. He s a member of the Junior Youth Group at church and helps them serve Advent and Lenten dinners, and helps lead monthly services for people at Bethesda nursing home. Ian is thinking of becoming a civil engineer after college.
