Adult Enrichment Happenings Save the Date! St. Clare celebration: Save August 8 th at 6pm Sr. Guadalupe from the Franciscan Spirituality Center will help us grow in the Spirituality of St. Clare. St. Clare is the founder of the order of the Poor Clares, a community of nuns devoted to a simple, austere life of prayer. How can we grow in our prayer life? 24 week Bible study entitled The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation, will begin September 11 th and run through March 19 th, 7pm until 8:30ish with breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. One session will be held on Thursday evenings and a daytime session, if enough participation, will be offered during the day on Wednesday. Do not let the 24 weeks deter you from attending, as the sessions are easy to make up. Thank you to the several who have already registered for this class. I welcome others to commit themselves to diving deeper into Scripture. You will learn how the key people, places, and events in the Bible fit together to reveal God s Plan for humanity. Please contact Pat at 503-654-5449 or pat.raschio@gmail.com if you have questions or to register CD's available in the Lighthouse CD display Week #1 - Angels Explained: What You Should Know About the Nine Choirs Dr. Mark Miravalle - Professor of Theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville - teaches on the fascinating subject of Angels. Why did God create angels? How are they different from humans? Are guardian angels found in Scripture? Discover the answer to these questions and many more as Dr. Mark Miravalle explains the nine choirs of angels, their differing roles and hierarchical order, and how much angels can help us if we only ask. Parishioner Comments I liked the very concise & detailed explanation of how the angel studies were done by the Church, the history of the angels, all the different types of angels & their duties (good & bad), the hierarchies, tying info to scripture & tradition, the importance of talking/praying to our guardian angel daily, invoking the angels, going to Adoration, etc. Everyone likes angels, but I didn't realize there was so much info, & how to join the good side to fight the fallen angels! Setting up for morning Mass St. John s is in need of help from the morning Mass attendees. Over the summer we are in need of people to help Thursday and Friday and maybe other days as people go on vacation. What does this entail? Arrive early enough to set out the vessels with the host and wine for Mass, unlock doors, turn on lights, turn on sound system then after Mass put things away and lock doors and turn off lights and the sound system. This could be a team effort. Please call Pat at the parish office for more details and training. Remember through our baptism we are all called to serve the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Low Gluten Host (0.01%) St. John s has purchased a new low gluten host. If you need to receive the Blessed Eucharist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass: At communion time arrange yourself to be the last person in the priest line. When it is your turn to receive tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will go to the tabernacle to get you one and then give you communion. If you Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is being cancelled until further notice. We have two volunteers who have to quit due to other commitments leaving us only one volunteer. So until more volunteers step forward and are trained we will discontinue this ministry to the children. If your child goes out for Liturgy of the Word you might consider this an opportunity for you to serve your church and child. What does this entail? At the 10am Mass you will lead the children out of the church to a room in the parish center where the Sunday readings are read from the Children s lectionary and then we spend time on the meaning of the readings in the lives of the children. There is material available to guide you through this time. Please call Pat at the parish office or email pat.raschio@gmail.com to get more information or to volunteer. During the summer the Youth Group is meeting every two weeks. The next meeting is on Monday, July 14th at 7:30pm in the Teen Room. On that day we will put together a game of kickball. Bring your friends, all youth are invited. Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio The image of rain and snow watering the earth and bringing forth fruit thus accomplishing the purpose for which they were sent by the Lord is an apt illustration of the life-giving effect God intends his Word to have in the minds and hearts of those who hear it. Jesus will offer several parables to illustrate for his listeners what he means by the kingdom of heaven. He begins with the parable of the sower, of course seeds grow best in good soil. Seeds that miss the soil, are sown on rocky ground, or are sown among other plants will not grow. The surprise in the parable is the enormous yield of the seed that is sown on good soil. The different types of soil in which the seeds are sown are metaphors for the disposition with which each individual hears the teaching about the kingdom of heaven. Some will be easily swayed away from the kingdom of heaven. Some will receive it for a time but will lose it when faced with difficulties. Some will hear the word but will then permit other cares to choke it out. Yet some will receive it well, and the seed will produce abundant fruit. Today's Gospel reminds us that in order for God's Word to take root in us and produce abundant fruit, we must endeavor to be like good soil. His Word awaits our response. We must show ourselves to be children of that Word. We must allow that Word to accomplish God s will in our lives. As Jesus warns today, we must take care lest the devil steal it away or lest it be choked by worldly concerns. In the Eucharist, the Word gives himself to us as bread to eat. He does so that we might be made fertile, yielding fruits of holiness. Families, in particular, hold the responsibility for preparing the soil so that the seeds of God's Word can grow strong. There are many ways in which families do this family traditions in which faith is celebrated, prayer and reading of Scripture, and instruction on the faith. In these ways, parents fulfill the promises they made at their child's Baptism. (sources; various articles)

Franciscan Spiritual Center Seat of the Soul Book Study It is the 25th anniversary of this provocative book. Have you read it before? Or perhaps you have never read it. Either way, 25 years later, the message is still worth discussing. Zukav speaks from the frontier of science on what is the experience of the human spirit. He invites us to discover the "authentic power" by "infusing the activities of daily life with reverence, compassion, and trust", makes them come alive with meaning and purpose. He shifts our perceptions with how to transform oneself from a five-sensory physical being to a multisensory 'spirit in a body.' Can these insights enrich your faith practices? Come take the journey! Dates: Wednesdays 9, 16, 23, 30 & Aug. 6th Time: 6:30pm - 8pm Cost: $75 for series, Book sold separately Facilitator: Mary Jo Saavedra If you are interested in attending this program or others, please call 503-794-8542.
