105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to observe your righteous ordinances. 107 I am severely afflicted; give me life, O LORD, according to your word. 108 Accept my offerings of praise, O LORD, and teach me your ordinances. Psalm 119: 105-108 Nurturing the Life of Faith: Adult Education at COG The Lutheran church, certainly including Cross of Glory, has taken the words of the Psalmist seriously. We have been blessed with a rich history of children s and adult education and there is much to be excited about these days as well. This summer almost 100 children participated in either Safari Search, VBS or both. Approximately 25 youth are involved in either confirmation or youth ministry classes every Wednesday night. More than 20 children are singing and learning about Jesus every Friday night with our children s choir. Sunday school has begun again for this year with a new curriculum that coordinates with our preaching texts. So, what about our adults? We are continuing to expand our offerings for adults as well. Education and opportunities to gather in community are critical to nurturing faith at every age! Consider which of these offerings may work for you this fall: Tuesday Lectionary Study An exploration of the preaching texts for the coming Sunday. 9:30-10:45 am Library Sunday Adult Forums Starting in October we ll have adult forums on a variety of topics every 2 nd and 4 th Sunday. We begin Oct 12 with Becky Palmgren from the ELCA Foundation 10:15 to 11:00 am ML Learning Center 2 Fall Bible Study Together we will study Paul s letter to the Romans, a book Luther gave significant credit for his own revelation of God s grace and mercy. Senior Care and Ministry: Where do we go from here? If you are a senior (or imagine you might be some day ), I would like to invite you to join me for coffee, treats and a conversation about our pastoral care and ministry on Monday, October 13 at 1:00 pm. I would especially like your input on pastoral care issues like lay and clergy visitation, parish nursing, support groups and the like. However, I would certainly also be delighted to hear your other ideas for programming or ways to stay connected and support those who can no longer attend. We ll plan on 90 minutes but if ideas are flowing and we need more time I will keep my afternoon open! Helping Faithful Stewards Create Lasting Impact On Sunday, October 12 th, we will welcome Becky Palmgren here at Cross of Glory. Becky is a Regional Gift Planner for the ELCA Foundation. She provides assistance to ELCA members looking for help in gathering information to prepare a will or trust. There is no charge for her services, and she has no products or services to sell. Becky talks about being good stewards of the gifts that the Lord has given each of us, as everything we have comes from the Lord. The size of your estate is not what directs this program, it is what you want to accomplish with what you have to give that matters. Becky will present a brief temple talk at the 9:00 service, a more detailed presentation during the fellowship hour, and a condensed presentation at a temple talk during the 11:00 service. Her presentation will include wills (including adding a Christian Preamble), personal representative/executors, durable power of attorney for financial matters and health care, gift planning of various kinds and much more. Bring your questions! 4

We are back at work from 9:00am to 12 Noon every Monday morning. Stop in to see our members cutting, tying, pinning and sewing. Our members come from many different churches in our city and you will see 35 to 42 women working at many different tasks. From September 2013 to May 2014 we made 569 quilts and 575 items of children s clothing and gave 7,719 volunteer hours. We are always in need of donations of fabric, yarn and bed sheets in good condition. The fabric needs to be washable. We also welcome any cash donations to purchase the batting and to repair our machines. Thank you for supporting the CEAP Quilters. You will see our quilts on the pews on Sunday, November 23th. On Monday, the 24 th, our quilts and children s clothing will be sent to the CEAP office on Brooklyn Boulevard. Ruth Lunquist

We had a meeting to plan for next year. Many fun and interesting things were decided on. I hope you can all find something you want to do! Marian Priest 50 + and Friends October is a good time to get out into the countryside. On October 1 st, we are going to Elm Creek and the Eastman Nature Center. We ll take a tram ride through the park and learn how to make apple cider. We will get to taste the fresh cider we ve made. We will go to Dehn s Country Manor for lunch. Our choices are hot turkey or hot meatloaf sandwiches, mashed potatoes and gravy. On October 15-16 we will go to Granite Falls. We will visit the World War II Air Museum, and the site of the Indian uprising and the Indian Museum. We spend the night at Prairie s Edge Hotel and Casino. November 8 th takes us for our annual Lutefisk and Meatball dinner. They have mashed potatoes, rutabagas, cole slaw, cranberries and apple and pumpkin pie for dessert. On the way home we will stop at Pine Tree Apple Orchard where you can buy just about anything made of apples. On November 21 st, Tourco is having their Christmas Party. They have a dinner, entertainment by Allen Edwards a singer from Branson and door prizes and goodies. There will be time to try your luck at your favorite machines. Flu Shots to Go! On Sunday, October 19 th, the Minnesota Visiting Nurses Association will be at Cross of Glory to give flu shots to those who need them. They accept most insurance plans just as if you go to Cub or Walgreens. Plan to get your shot on that day! Fall Clean Up Join us on October 25 th at 9:00am with your rakes and tools for cleaning up around Cross of Glory. There is much to be done! Call Roger at 763-535-6674 or 612-619-2581 for more information. 8

In our October Circle meeting we will continue our study WE ARE CALLED. Theme Verse: Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here I am; send me. Isaiah 6:8 Overview: In this session we will revisit the risen Christ s calling of Paul, study ways God has recruited prophets and disciples, and consider how we have been called in baptism and throughout the twists and turns of our lives. Our Circles meet the third Tuesday of each month. We meet at various times. If you would like to visit a circle, call the hostess or just come! If you would like to read the Bible study before you attend a circle meeting, there are extra copies of the Gather magazine in the library. Community Needs Circle meets in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am. Glory Circle meets in the Fellowship Hall at Noon. PCYC Circle meets in the Library at 1:00pm. Mission Circle meets at a member s home. Check the W/ELCA Happenings newsletter for a list of hostesses for each circle. Welcome Carol and Carol! At our August 25 th Board meeting, Carol Sjoquist volunteered to be our Board chairwoman, replacing Joan Johnson who retired. Carol said she asked Carol Stejskal to co-chair and she agreed. Carol Sjoquist has been a board member for several years. We would like to thank Joan for the time and effort she has given to W/ELCA. Service Project We are still looking for a service project. If you have an idea, please put your suggestion in the W/ELCA mailbox (#26). A contact name, phone number or address should be included. 9

With the first month of Fall underway, the youth are doing some exciting spiritual growth. Four Youth ministry, our Wednesday evening youth group, has changed from an outreach focus to a nurturing focus to challenge our kids to grow from within as we look at the 12 keys to living well. Like this summer, most of our evening activities will be held at Elim Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale, with Pastor Mark and Max teaching the high school program and Pastor Doug and Pastor Chris from Elim teaching confirmation. Another exciting experience happening this fall is the start of Bible quizzing. We have eight youth from Cross of Glory who have committed their time for the next five months to memorize the book of Acts. The book is 28 chapters long with just a little over 1,000 verses. These eight youth will try to memorize the entire book as a team as they compete against other churches in the Twin Cities and Hudson areas. The first quiz will be held at Bethlehem Baptist in Maple Grove on Oct. 4 th. The quizzing will start around 9am and last until 1pm. Bible Quizzing Please pray for these quizzers for the next few months as they memorize God s Word.
