SPIRITUAL WARFARE Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-13

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:14-17
First Paul exhorts them to be strengthened in the Lord and to put on the full armor of God so they can stand against the devil s strategies (vv.10-13). Second, he exhorts believers to stand by appropriating the various pieces of defensive armor (vv.14-16). Finally, he commands them to grasp the last two pieces of armor, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (v. 17) and continues by stating the need for prayer and alertness. Harold Hoehner

For Paul, prayer is not a perfunctory obligation to be fulfilled before God two or three times a day. Prayer is an extraordinary opportunity to communicate with God and appeal to him for help on behalf of all believers all the time. C linton Arnold
