This Means War July 14, 2013 Our Arsenal Sunday AM A reporter interviewed a man on his 100 th birthday. What are you most proud of? The man said, I don t have an enemy in the world. What a beautiful thought! How inspirational! How you have achieved such a feat? The man said, I outlived all of them. Be assured, if you have no other enemies in this world, the devil and his demons are all the enemies you ll ever need. You can t outlive them, outwit them but in Christ, you can outlast them if you stand firm in your faith. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 As we continue our study of spiritual war, I want to move from our armor to our arsenal in this great battle. Recap Paul tells us we re in a hand-to-hand spiritual fight to the death against an ancient and invisible foe whose aim is to kill, steal and destroy our worship of God to keep it for himself and the only way we can overcome his schemes is by following God s rules of combat thru Christ and the spiritual armory He provides

Rules of Combat from Glenn Weekley at FBC: 1 If the enemy is in range then so are you. 2 The easy way is always mined and mines are equal opportunity weapons. 3 Look unimportant they may be low on ammo. 4 Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at 5 Don t draw fire it only irritates people around you. 6 The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire. 7 When the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is no longer our friend. 8 If your main parachute doesn t open just remember you have the rest of your life to pull the secondary reserve chute. 9 When in doubt, empty the magazine. 10 A Purple Heart just proves that you were smart enough to think of a plan, dumb enough to try it, and lucky enough to survive. 11 Don t ever be the first, don t ever be the last, and don t ever volunteer for anything. 12 The enemy invariably attacks in one of two ways: When you are ready for them and when you are not ready for them.

The Bible s rules for combat are much more serious and helpful than these, yet before we delve into weaponry God has provided us, I think it d help us to understand exactly what they are. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, authorities, and powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, w/ the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and w/ your feet fitted w/ the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, w/ which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions w/ all kinds of prayers and requests. W/ this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord s people. Ephesians 6:10-18

The armor of God isn t something you put on everyday like a pair of jeans or uniform. Each piece of the armory is a characteristic/quality that s present as a result of our personal pursuit of Christ. They re lifestyle characteristics of a sincere and significant faith. They re not articles of Christian clothing to be leisurely put on and worn, but convictions and beliefs that are to be lived out and maintained as a regular pattern of our lives. Last Sunday Pastor Art spoke to you about the armor God has provided for us so that we can w/stand the fiery darts and schemes of Satan. Today we re going to look at the arsenal God has given us for the battle. I The SHIELD of Faith When you hear the word shield you re likely to think defensively rather than offensively; but the shield of faith is useful both offensively and defensively. Roman soldiers used 2 kinds of shields one was employed in hand-to-hand combat while the other known as a scutum was about 4½ ft tall and 2½ ft wide and doubled as a stretcher.

These shields were made of laminated wood covered w/ hardened leather and lined w/ metal. Uniquely, these shields were capable of interlocking w/ other shields to create a tortoise shield or moving wall. In combat, a Roman soldier would use his shield to protect himself from attacks, but he d also often swing his shield to stun the enemy w/ a head or body blow. The Bible tells us our shield is FAITH. This isn t a reference to saving faith or to a body of beliefs but a reference to living/practical faith. In other words, faith is our daily confidence and reliance upon God for His guidance, direction and protection. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. And w/out faith it is impossible to please God, b/c anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:1, 6 Faith is holding on to and believing God s promises. Notice that faith is believing in what you know is true even though you can t see it and in the spiritual realm it is absolutely essential if you re going to please God.

We all execute a practical faith on a daily basis when we drive our cars, cross bridges, eat in restaurants but we don t all execute spiritual faith or trust in God. Faith in God is a little different from faith in things or people b/c we are trusting in the unseen faith has to be tested. In what do you place your confidence? What do you place all of your weight? Our shield against the devil s attacks is our daily living faith that God will keep His promises as we trust and obey His leading. This is critical faith in God always results in obedience to His rhema His revelation of Truth. So then, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word (rhema) of God. Romans 10:17 Faith comes as a result of abiding and applying God s Word to your life as God speaks it into your life. So our shield isn t in living the way we want in the hope that God will bail us out when we get into trouble. It s found in placing all our trust in Him by putting our weight on His truth and then living it out in our actions. Faith and obedience go hand-in-hand. You can t have one w/out the other. And for faith to become obedience requires that we rightly place our confidence in God.

But faith isn t solely individualized. Faith is something we share w/ other believers. We need one another to spur each other along towards love and good deeds. Understanding that we re engaged in a hand-to-hand struggle w/ the devil and his legions, it is interesting the shield referred to in this text isn t the small Roman shield, but the larger war shield. I believe this suggests that we re not to fight alone in battle we must fight linked to other believers there is power in numbers. Picture of Bear sign there is safety in numbers. It is unlikely that any Christian can stand firm in their faith for a long period of time w/out the support, accountability and compassion of other Christians we need one another. You need me and I need you. II The SWORD of the Spirit sword (machaira) refers to a Roman gladius or short, dual-edged sword about 18-24 long. It was a weapon of precision designed for hand-to-hand combat. Paul tells us that God has given us His specific Word to assist us in our close quartered encounters w/ Satan and his legions.

In the Greek, there are (2) words specifically related to Scripture that play significantly in our understanding and application of God s truth logos and rhema. logos is the most widely used word in reference to the truth of God. It refers to the entire council of God s truth. It is truth for all people that provides us w/insight and wisdom into the person and will of God. There are (2) particular passages that need to be noted: The word (logos) of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing evenly to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hb. 4:12 This verse speaks to the necessity of God s Word to articulate right and wrong and good and evil into our lives to reveal his will and person to us. 2 Timothy 2:15 Paul charges us to handle His Word so that it germinates to produce a genuine faith in God. Study to show yourself approved of God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed who handles God s Word w/ accuracy. 2Timothy 2:15

The idea of accuracy is that we know it inside and out and that we have rightly divide it and apply it w/out heresy and free of personal opinion and agenda. God wants us to effectively use the Bible in our lives and in warfare never treating it like a book of magic charms or a clove of garlic around our neck to drive away vampires but that we regard and study it as if it is the very words of God... So the Psalmist calls us to hide it in our hearts by mediating on it day and night What do you believe about the Bible? Is it God s infallible, inerrant truth or is it something else? What we believe about the entire Scripture will dictate how we will view and follow God. If we re not confident in the inspiration of Scripture, that the Bible really came from the H.S., then we will not use it effectively nor will we listen to the H.S. when He speaks to us through the Word. But God doesn t stop w/ the logos instead through the logos God will give us His rhema. And it is His rhema which is so critical to experiencing a vital Christian life.

rhema is derived from rheo meaning to speak to say a definite word. It refers to the spoken word, especially a word as uttered by a living voice as in the H.S. speaking directly into our lives. In this context, it refers to the uttering of a definite intelligible word by the H.S. in a specific situation for the believer so that he can w/stand the schemes of the Devil. In Ephesians 6:17, Paul doesn t use logos but rhema. In spiritual warfare, it is the specific revelation of God in accordance w/ the logos that is essential to overcoming the schemes of the enemy. Remember the Christian life is about knowing God, hearing his voice and obeying His leading. Just as a small dagger is applied w/ skill and precision to a vital area of the body in combat, so we must use God s Word carefully and expertly by applying specific principles as spoken by the H.S. into our circumstances. Now don t miss this how we handle the logos proportionately determines how God will speak His rhema. Thus, if I m a student of His Word, surrendered to His Word, w/ an accurate understanding of His truth, God is more able to use His rhema in my life.

All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 So how's your skill w/ the spiritual sword? If you learn how to use it properly, the Word can be an effective weapon for any challenge. The Bible is an armory of heavenly weapons, a laboratory of infallible medicines and a mine of exhaustless wealth. It s a guidebook for every road, a chart for every sea, a medicine for every malady and a balm for every wound. Rob us of our Bible and our sky has lost its sun. Thomas Guthrie A READ the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema Get into the Word allow it to seep into the nook and crannies of your life. B RUMINATE the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema ruminate to meditate on and to absorb every nutrient.

Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf shall not wither; and whatever he does will prosper. Ps. 1:1-3 C REALIZE the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema Study the word don t just skim the surface dig deep. D REMEMBER the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema Thy Word I have hid in my heart that I may not sin against Thee. Ps. 119 E RECITE the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema Speak the Word to others share its truth w/ others. F REFLECT the Logos to RECEIVE Rhema Live the Word apply to your life through obedience.

Submit to God and accept the word he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you. Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice. If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like. But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice. James 1:21-25 One night, John Paton and his wife, missionaries to the New Hebrides Islands were awakened by chants outside their mission station. Looking out, they saw scores of hostile islanders w/ torches surrounding their station intent on burning the place down and killing the couple. Believing God at His Word for His provision and protection, the Paton s prayed throughout the night asking God to deliver them. As the tense, dark hours passed, the natives kept their distance. Finally, around daybreak, the Paton s looked out the window and saw that the hostiles were gone. There seemed to be nothing preventing the islanders from attacking, yet no attack came. The Paton s didn't find out why the islanders left so mysteriously until a year later, when the chief of the

tribe was won to Christ. Remembering the siege of a year before, John asked the newly converted chief why the tribesmen had departed instead of burning the mission to the ground. The chief replied, "We were afraid of the men who were w/ you". "What men?" Paton asked. The chief replied, "There were a 100 s of tall men around the mission that night and their clothing shone w/ light, and they had swords in their hands. We knew that they would never let us harm you, so we went back to our village." That s spiritual warfare at its extreme! God doesn t always have to intervene in such a dramatic way on behalf of His children. Yet the battle is just as real, just as deadly, for you and me in our everyday lives as it was that night for the Paton s in a mission station on the New Hebrides Islands. You and I are hemmed in by enemies every day, but God has provided a defense and offense for us that will enable us to stand against the schemes and flaming arrows of the enemy.
