Hixson Presbyterian Church November 11, 2018 Prelude Greetings Greg Baney Call to Worship Psalm 9:7-11 Prayer of Preparation & Confession Scripture Reading How Firm a Foundation How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word. What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you, who for refuge to Jesus hath fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am Thy God and will still give thee aid. I ll strengthen thee, help thee and cause thee to stand, upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee, I only design thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, no, will not desert to his foes. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I ll never, no never, no never forsake. Nothing In All The Earth What shall separate us from Your love? Can years of sorrow break eternal bonds? Can condemnation ever raise its voice Against the pardon of the blood of Christ? Though our journey here is long This will be our triumph song Chorus: Nothing in all the earth Not any height above Could ever tear us from Your everlasting love Nothing in all the earth Not any height above Could ever tear us from Your everlasting love What shall separate us from Your love? For now the sting of death is overcome And all the powers of this world must fall Before Your feet because You rule them all And though our journey here is long This shall be our triumph song Nothing in all the earth Could ever tear us from Your everlasting love
Responsive Reading Job 28:20-28 Prayer of Intercession God Moves God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. Deep in His dark and hidden mines, with never failing skill, He fashions all His bright designs, and works His sovereign will. Chorus: So God, we trust in You. O God, we trust in You. When tears are great and comforts few, We hope in mercies ever new. We trust in You. Oh fearful saints, new courage take: The clouds that you now dread Are big with mercy and will break in blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust Him for His grace. Behind a frowning providence, He hides a smiling face. God s purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour. The bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. Blind unbelief is sure to err and scan His work in vain. God is His own interpreter and He will make it plain. Benediction Postlude Why Do We Do That? Reading Scripture We believe that All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable... (2 Tim. 3:16) The Scriptures are the very words of God. When they are read God speaks directly to us. Reading scripture shows our submission to His words and our willingness to sit under God as the One who gives wisdom, from [whose] mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Prov. 2:6) God also commands us to do this regularly as a part our worship. In 2 Timothy 4:13 the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy, the pastor of the church in Ephesus, to...devote yourself to the public reading of scripture. Whenever we hear scripture read or participate in a corporate reading we worship in obedience and receive from God that which is living and active (Heb. 4:12) and which always accomplishes the purposes of the Lord (Is. 55:10).
