73 Sata Tempts Jesus Luke 4:1-13 BIBLe BACKGROUND for Leaders Jesus Goes Ito the Wilderess Jesus temptatio by Sata followed closely o the heels of his baptism ad God s cofirmatio of Jesus relatioship with him (Luke 3:21-22). Why did God allow Jesus to be tempted i this way? At least oe aswer is foud i Hebrews 4:14-16. If Jesus had ot bee tempted as we are, he would ot be able to sympathize with our vulerability to temptatio. Because he was tempted, he ca idetify with us. Sata Tempts Jesus i the Wilderess Some ask if it was possible for Jesus to give i to Sata s temptatios. There s ot a easy aswer to this questio. Some say his divie ature ruled out the possibility of his siig. Others say that his humaity made him vulerable to si ad that if the temptatio to si was t real, the he would t have bee able to atoe for our sis i his death. For further study, read Hebrews 2:14-18. Although Luke 4:1-13 is referred to as the temptatio of Jesus, it s importat to remember the words of Luke 4:13. These evets did t mark the ed of Sata s attempts to draw Jesus away from God. Throughout Jesus miistry, Sata tried to capitalize o Jesus humaity. However, Jesus always withstood the test, ad he died for us after livig a siless life. The Jesus Coectio As your relatioship with Jesus grows through spedig time i God s Word, your resistace to Sata s temptatios will become stroger. What temptatios are you battlig right ow? Use a Bible app or a Bible website to fid a verse that helps you fight that temptatio. Persoalize it as a prayer, ad memorize it. You ca write your prayer here. Whe Sata offered Jesus all the kigdoms of the world, the stregth of the temptatio was i the shortcut it offered. Sata offered Jesus authority over the world uder Sata, who was uder God, without havig to go through the humiliatio ad sufferig that Jesus kew was comig. The oly coditio was that Jesus had to worship Sata. But all this was a deceptio. Jesus would t have become kig; he would have become a servat of Sata. Ad Jesus saw through Sata s pla. Jesus Overcomes Sata s Temptatios Jesus aswered each of Sata s temptatios with Scripture. What does that tell us about how we ca be prepared to face temptatio? Lesso 7 Witer Quarter

Pay attetio to where other people move so you lear the way. If you choose the correct square, you ll give the cady from that square to me ad go to the back of the lie. There are really good treats for you at the ed of this maze if you make it there. You ca choose to step o a square you kow is wrog, ad you ca eat the cady o that square, but you wo t get to have ay of the treats at the ed of the maze. If you accidetally step o a wrog square, you ca leave the cady there ad the ext perso will take a tur. Ecourage the first perso to choose a square he or she thiks might be the begiig of the path through the grid. If the perso chooses correctly, take the cady from that square, ad have that perso go to the back of the lie. The ext perso ca try as well, followig the rules metioed before. Give kids 10 miutes to get to the ed of this maze. If people keep takig the Hershey s Kisses, they ll ever get to the ed, but if they work together, they ll get the prizes at the ed. Talk With Kids Lead kids i this discussio. Ask: What was easy or difficult about workig with everyoe else to get through this maze? How did you decide whether or ot to give i to temptatio i this maze? I what ways is that like or ulike the way you decide whether or ot to give i to temptatio i real-life situatios? Say: Sometimes goig through life is like goig through a maze. We ca go may differet ways, but oe way is the best way. We ca be tempted to go the wrog way by goig after thigs that lead us away from the right path. Today we ll take a look at how Jesus faced temptatio as we talk about how Jesus helps us resist temptatio. Witer Quarter Lesso 7

Have pairs discuss the followig questios: Ask: Which of these temptatios seems the most difficult to you? Explai. What s differet about the ways the devil tempted Jesus ad the ways he tempts you? How ca Jesus help you resist the temptatios you face? Ask pairs to share their isights with the larger group. Say: Oe reaso Jesus could use Scripture whe the devil tempted him was that Jesus kew God s Word. Jesus kew what was true. He did t have to try to reach a decisio because he already kew what would please God. Jesus helps us resist temptatio, too! Talk With Kids Lead kids i this discussio. Ask: What does it mea to you that the devil backed dow whe Jesus quoted Scripture to him? What do you have that you ca use to defeat temptatios? What ca you do to prepare to beat temptatio before it happes? Say: Jesus already kew the Bible verses he was goig to use to put Sata i his place, ad Jesus helps us resist temptatio, too.
