Dr. Edward D. McCreary, Pastor Emeritus Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Richmond, VA 8:30 AM Church School & New Members Class January is Stewardship Emphasis Month The word steward comes from the Greek work oikos meaning manager or guardian of God s household affairs. The basic requirement of a steward is faithfulness to God. God calls us to be caretakers of creation; to manage money, influence and power wisely; and to use our time and talents in ways that are pleasing to and glorify God. During the month of January we will seek to engage the entire congregation in understanding the meaning of stewardship as well as lead the congregation in practicing sound principles of stewardship in every aspect of their lives. (See inside for more information) As we transition from The Year of Transformation to The Year of Manifestation, let us give glory to God for where He has brought us from, to where He would like for us to go in the future with new opportunities, new hope, and new successes. Love, Pastor Thompson Our Vision Statement "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ)
Points: (1) Know that God is a provider; He will provide an open door for you to go in the right direction (2) You must reinforce what you already know, that is, God is able growth. The color of the table cloth on the Communion table and podium are changed to GREEN to indicate the season. The pulpit dress is changed according to the season of the Christian Calendar. Look for further information on the Christian Calendar and pulpit dress colors in the near future. (Pulpit Attire is Green) General Theme For This Quarter: CHRIST, THE FULFILLMENT The study this quarter focuses on Matthew s gospel, which confirms the fulfillment of God s promise to send the Messiah. Throughout its pages, references are made to Old Testament prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus. The writer gives other evidence through events and people s reactions that point to Jesus as the Christ. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #2 * EVIDENCES OF JESUS AS MESSIAH These five lessons point out some of the events in Jesus life that helped identify Him as Messiah. The study includes Jesus baptism, temptation, healing of people who were blind and mute, prayer of thanks to the Father, and rejection by individuals in His hometown. DECEMBER 2009 JANUARY FEBRUARY 2010 CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! CLASSES FROM KINDERGARTEN TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TWO CHOICES FOR ADULTS YOUNG ADULTS AGE 19 AND UP ADULTS ALL AGES WELCOME DAILY BIBLE READING THIS WEEK S : NEXT WEEK S: REVEALED IN REJECTION Matthew 13:54 58 People in Jesus hometown thought they knew Him. Their limited knowledge of Him as the Son of God led them to be skeptical of His teachings and deeds of power. The people s rejection of Jesus hampered Jesus from continuing His ministry in His hometown. People respond to rejection in different ways. What have we done when we have been rejected? Jesus faced the rejection and moved on to continue His ministry. RECOGNIZED BY A CANAANITE WOMAN Matthew 15:21 28 A Canaanite woman approached Jesus about her demon possessed daughter. Even though Jesus explained that He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, He rewarded the woman s persistent faith with the healing of her daughter. The members, ministries and friends of Mount Olive Baptist Church are being offered an opportunity to capture our spiritual journey of praise and thanksgiving. An area between the Multi purpose facility and the Sanctuary has been designated as a Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden. This area will feature engraved brick pavers placed in memory, honor, celebration and encouragement of the life of a loved one. Additionally, pavers will recognize a birth, christening, baptism, wedding anniversary and event or favorite scripture. This ongoing project will secure donations to fund the installation of the garden as well as support for the building fund. The garden will contain 840 pavers creating a lasting memory to recognize loved ones, special events and our walk of faith within the Mount Olive Family. The engraved pavers are available in two sizes. The 4 x 8 paver can be purchased for $150.00 and the 8 x 8 will cost $300.00. 8 x 8 center pavers, which will surround the two cornerstones from previous church structures, will be available for $500.00. Each paver must be paid in full at the time of purchase. For additional information, please pick up a paver brochure from the information table outside of the church office. Paver orders will be received after each morning services through May 30 th. If you have any questions concerning the project, you may contact any member of the committee listed below. We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. The word Epiphany is from the Greek word epiphaneia, which means manifestation or appearance. The Season of Epiphany begins January 6th (the traditional date of Jesus baptism), and continues 4-9 weeks depending on the date of Easter. Attention in the celebration is given to the coming of the Wise Men, the baptism of Jesus, and his first miracle of the turning of water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana. The accent is on JESUS as the revealer of GOD to mankind, the missionary and the evangelistic ministries are emphasized. In many sections of the world, even in America, Epiphany is called Old Christmas, because the two seasons used to be combined. On the Day of Epiphany, January 6, we celebrate Christ s being revealed to the world and the visit of the wise men, the first Gentiles to whom He was made known. Scripture does not say how many wise men came to Bethlehem. At various times tradition has set the number from two to twelve. However, because three gifts are mentioned, today we usually think of three wise men or Magi.
