Page 3 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2013 KEEPING OUR SANCTUARY BEAUTIFUL a letter from our Pastor Dear Friends, Some time ago our parish Administration Commission, at my request, identified a list of areas in our parish buildings requiring maintenance and repair. Working together, we agreed to identify the top two priorities, aware that all could not be addressed at once. The top priority was the DOORS to the entrance of our church. Although this project took longer to complete than anticipated, our beautiful new doors were worth the wait! Our Administration Commission and I identified our church CONCRETE FLOOR as our next priority. After thirteen years of use, they are stained, cracked and soiled. Over the past eighteen months, various solutions have been investigated and studied with the help of professionals. A number of flooring contractors were interviewed. More recently, we retained a Liturgical architect who specializes in church interior design and was recommended by the Archdiocese. With his help we identified a flooring contractor, who is also approved by the Archdiocese. Working together, our architect and contractor presented their top four recommended solutions. One was selected after consultation with various agencies and an open parish meeting. The work on our church concrete floor is scheduled to begin on September 9th. It is estimated that this project will take approximately three to four weeks to complete. This work will take place Monday through Friday. Our pews will be temporarily relocated one section at a time to O Reilly Hall. They will be removed on Monday mornings and returned to the church on Friday evenings. Hence, we will have full-use of our church on weekends. Daily morning Mass will not be disrupted. While the church pews are in O Reilly Hall they will re-furbished. Should the need arise to celebrate a funeral, I have made arrangements with St. Jude s parish in Westlake, St. Paschal s parish in Thousand Oaks and St. Julie s parish in Newbury Park to use their churches. I ask for your patience and understanding throughout the proposed work. I apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter. Thank you, Rev. Jarlath Dolan Pastor Please see Page 7 for detailed information on the work proposed for our church concrete floor.

For some it was a desire in our hearts to teach the faith that we love. For others, the calling came in the form of an invitation (begging) for teachers in the faith formation programs at our parishes. It is not important how we are called, but that we understand that this calling is from God. Some have taught for years and have a fairly good understanding of the faith, others are just discovering their faith, but for all of us teaching will deepen our own understanding of what the Church instructs. As we begin this journey we look for guidance to fulfill our roles as educators. The Catechism of the Catholic Church provides us with the map for this journey. We are reminded at the beginning of the Catechism (12) that we must read the Catechism ourselves so that we might understand our faith and be able to teach it. In order to educate others, we must first educate ourselves. It is vital that as we do this, we pray for acceptance of these teachings so that we will not mislead anyone based on our own ideas, but that we teach in full communion with Mother Church. Later, (2663) we are instructed by the Catechism to be teachers of prayer. In order to do this, we must spend time in daily prayer ourselves. We can do this by something as simple as focusing on each word of the Our Father. Spending quiet time in front of the Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful way to pray, or by reading Holy Scripture and asking God to reveal a deeper understanding of His word to us. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE BREEZEWAY FOR: 1st through 6th Grade Faith Formation 7th and 8th Grade Junior High Ministry, Faith Formation & MAX PAX Youth Ministry Family Faith Formation High School Confirmation Process, CONFIRMING DISCIPLES Adult Confirmation Process When looking at what the Catechism teaches specifically about Catechists (426, 427, 428) it becomes abundantly clear that our role is serious and necessary in the teaching of others. We are encouraged to live our lives with Christ, as Christ, for Christ. We are to relate everything we teach to Him. We are to pick up our own crosses and be willing to live, die and live again with Him. We should shine with joy when we teach. Father Corapi reminds us, that the teaching of the Catholic Faith should be imparted rather than instructed. This means that our love of the Catholic Faith will be infectious. Others will desire more knowledge based on our enthusiasm. They will see the fruits of living our faith in our lives. These instructions of the Church are not meant to discourage us, or make us feel unworthy to teach the faith. It is just the opposite, the more we learn about our faith, the more these teachings become a part of our lives, the better teachers we will become. God bless you and thank you for your service.

Any baptized Catholic who has yet to complete sacraments of initiation: EUCHARIST and/or CONFIRMATION The process continues throughout the year, focusing on the meaning of the weekly scriptural readings spanning the liturgical seasons, whilst familiarizing the faithful with Catholic practices, truths and traditions of our faith. The program is open to all, regardless of current religious affiliation or lack thereof. Anyone who has a sincere interest in becoming a Catholic Christian is invited. All parishioners are also invited: to renew your faith or to serve as sponsors for our inquiring faithful. Contact Lisa Capobianco for details: 818-309-3152 LISA@STMAXCHURCH.ORG Reflecting on God s Word It's tempting to wish that our faith in God enabled us to have an unfailing trust that God will take us where we want to be. It would free us from diddling with decisions, vacillating and second-guessing. Only that wouldn't be faith because it would be our own script we'd have God carrying out. Faith in God surrenders the script. It also surrenders the outcome, which is why Abraham, when asked by God to pack up kin and belongings and move to another land, did just that without knowing where or how he'd eventually settle in. And much later, like the unpredictable thread of a good novel, Abraham's story finds him and Sarah with child when they are 100 and 90 years old. A decade or so later, Abraham again finds himself without any sensible or sane understanding of the storyline as he leads young Isaac up a sacrificial mountain to what would seem to be a failure of God's promise to Abraham to father countless generations. Once more God rewrites the ending. Throughout Abraham's life it is God's script that Abraham lives out, not his own. Faith is unpredictable, like good novels that twist and turn and keep us in suspense. If novels are well written, they keep us up long into the night. On the other hand, we like our lives quite the opposite. The appearance of the unpredictable tends to unsettle and undo our living. We presume that good lives, unlike a good novel, are interesting and engaging but always deliberately focused and free of unwarranted surprises. And so we expect good novels and good lives to be like the tracks of the railroad: parallel, but never touching or crossing lest someone or something be derailed. Rev. Joseph J.
