Newsletter June 2016 Sanctified [Jesus prayed to the Father] 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. John 17:16-18 (NIV) My first professional employment came by invitation of a real estate broker in my home town who had a thriving agency. He asked if I would like to become an agent helping people buy and sell their properties. I took him up on his offer and was excited to begin. But first I needed to be properly licensed by the State of Minnesota. I needed to know the rules and appropriate ways to handle these large transactions. I was schooled to correctly appraise property values. I also was helped by my broker s experience and wisdom in learning how to engage in good relationships with buyers and sellers so the transfer would be a pleasant and fulfilling experience. And of course, to be successful as a realtor, I needed to put in all the effort I could muster to make a successful living and fulfilling career. I must have been good at it, because I was recognized several times by a national realtor franchise as one of their top ten realtors in all of Minnesota, Iowa and western Wisconsin. (I m not braggin, just sayin ) So what has this to do with Jesus prayer for his disciples (for us)? I want to help us understand a word Jesus used, but few Christians seem to have clear understanding--that word is sanctify. What is it? Are you being sanctified? It s obvious that Jesus desired his followers to be sanctified. But for what purpose? The word sanctify is defined in the dictionary as: To make holy; to consecrate. Set apart (chosen) for Godly use. To free from sin; to purify; to make useful. Christians are unique. We are called to salvation, chosen by God as his sons and daughters. We are not of the world because we no longer are under condemnation of sin. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. 2

We have the righteousness of Jesus dwelling in us. We are justified. Hallelujah! But Jesus is praying that we also be sanctified. He asked the Father to choose us, equip us and use us for The Father s holy purpose. What is His purpose? We are to bring more glory to the Father by proclaiming salvation offered to the world. The world does not know Him. How then shall they be saved unless those who are sanctified fulfill their holy purpose? We are sent into the world, but how shall we speak and act accurately according to our sanctified call unless the truthful Word of God is active in us? That means that we need to be in the Word, study the Word, meditate on the Word (think about it) and then put the Word into action. I think many Christians have been trained by the Lord for a long time, being sanctified for His holy purpose, but they have chosen not put their training into action. What if I had studied real estate laws, learned how to appraise property, observed how to interact with people wanting to buy or sell, But I never actually worked at being a real estate agent. I never put my training into practice. I was a realtor, but I never sold anything. I never actually asked anyone to list their property with me. Why? Because that might make me (or them) feel uncomfortable. I just kept everything I knew to myself. Or maybe I spoke with other real estate agents about what a lousy job the general public was doing on their own in trying to buy or sell property, but I never helped them, never advised them, and never shared with them what I knew. Jesus did not say that just some Christians would be called into sanctified work. We who are saved are all called. Are you fulfilling that call? We are all offered the same Word of truth. Are you immersed in that Word? We all have territories to put that Word into action. Are you active? I did not have to be a real estate agent I got to be one. It was a privilege to serve others in that vocation, and the biggest reward was I made a lot of money. No! The reward was seeing many people and families accomplish something special that I helped to make happen. And as a Christian, I have had the privilege to share the Word with many people, some who have come to living faith in Jesus Christ. That is what sanctified is all about. We are called, equipped, empowered, and sent for God s holy purpose. 3

(Continued from page 3 Pastors page) You don t have to; you get to! In Isaiah 6:8 we read of Isaiah s response after he was purified by the God of love and life, Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! *********************************************************************** Lund Council Meeting Minutes April 14, 2016 Present: Robin, Jennifer, Pastor Jim, Karen Halver, Russ Okeson, Carol Okeson, Lynda Hultin.
