WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP L: Behold: Jesus, the beloved son. C: With whom God is well pleased. L: Come and see the one of whom the prophets spoke, C: Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. L: The one for whom God has made nations his heritage, C: And the ends of the earth his possession.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS L: For the well-being of all God s children, we confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. L: Faithful Teacher, C: As we become fully immersed into a new year, we ask your forgiveness for those things that we have done and have failed to do that bring harm to you, others, or ourselves. Cleanse us from our sin and transform us by your forgiveness. Amen.

L: Our Lord Jesus walked on this earth to bring forgiveness and new life to all. In Jesus name, I proclaim to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins. Today you are made new by the abundant love of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Songs of Thankfulness and Praise ELW No. 310 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise; manifested by the star to the sages from afar, branch of royal David s stem in thy birth at Bethlehem: anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.

Manifest at Jordan s stream, prophet, priest, and king supreme; and at Cana wedding guest in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in pow r divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.

Manifest in making whole weakened body, fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil s might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill: anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.

Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, present in thy holy word; grace to imitate thee now and be pure, as pure art thou; that we might become like thee at thy great epiphany, and may praise thee, ever blest, God in flesh made manifest.

GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

Canticle of Praise ELW page 149 This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.

Power and Riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and blessing and glory are his. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.

Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation: blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen.

This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. Alleluia.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Dear God, C: Your only son came to impart the Spirit s power and mercy to all. May our hearts receive him and turn from the ways of selfish pride. We ask this in the name of Jesus the anointed one, our savior and lord. Amen.

READING MATTHEW 3:1-17 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Now John wore clothing of camel s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan,

and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.

Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. L: THE WORD OF THE LORD. C: THANKS BE TO GOD.

Where am I?

You re never lost. You re always somewhere.

Even if you don t know where you are, Jesus does

On Jordan s Bank the Baptist s Cry ELW 249 On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings!

Then cleansed be ev ry life from sin; make straight the way for God within, and let us all our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there.

We hail you as our Savior, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without your grace we waste away like flow rs that wither and decay.

Stretch forth your hand, our health restore, and make us rise to fall no more; oh, let your face upon us shine and fill the world with love divine.

All praise to you, eternal Son, whose advent has our freedom won, whom with the Father we adore, and Holy Spirit, evermore.

APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P: Lord, in your mercy, C:... hear our prayer. SHARING THE PEACE P: The Peace of the Lord be with you all... C:... and also with you.

Offering Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart Frederick C. Atkinson

OFFERING PRAYER P: O God, C: Accept these gifts we bring, and make us as trees who bear good fruit. Inspire us to give not only our riches and our possessions, but also to dedicate our time, abilities and lives to your service. For you love all that you have made and desire us all to live in peace and show one another mercy. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, Holy, Holy ELW page 153 Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow r and might, heav n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy Communion is open to all who confess Jesus as Lord and believe that Jesus is present in the Bread and Wine. If you desire gluten-free wafers, let the pastor know at the time of distribution. How Good, Lord, to Be Here! ELW 315 How good, Lord, to be here! Your glory fills the night; your face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light.

How good, Lord, to be here, your beauty to behold where Moses and Elijah stand, your messengers of old.

Fulfiller of the past and hope of things to be, we hail your body glorified and our redemption see.

Before we taste of death, we see your kingdom come; we long to hold the vision bright and make this hill our home.

How good, Lord, to be here! Yet we may not remain; but since you bid us leave the mount, come with us to the plain.
