The Mosaic Covenant What is the purpose of the law?

The purpose of the law It excites sin in us What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, You shall not covet. But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. (Romans 7:7-8)

The purpose of the law It excites sin in us It teaches us about our captivity to sin Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. (Romans 7:9)

The purpose of the law It excites sin in us It teaches us about our captivity to sin It drives us to Christ What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

The Law Civil Ceremonial Moral

The Conquest

The Conquest For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the LORD your God has given you. (Josh 23:12-13)

Judges 1. Israel does what is evil in the eyes of the LORD 2. The LORD delivers them into the hands of an enemy 3. The people cry out 4. God raises up a Judge 5. Lord delivers them 6. Period of rest

And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD? (2 Sam 7:18-19)
