Without this active memory, the bonds of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Communities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After participating in events, celebrations, and even small rituals, we remark about how good it is to gather and remember. Today s readings remind us of foundations laid deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about God s will to relate to us to be our God as we are called to be God s own beloved people. Today in three readings and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that create us as a people and the obligation and responsibility that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine. I am yours. These are God s words that created a people as surely as Let there be light created the sun and moon and all the stars. J. S. Paluch Co. Thank You to the People of Cathedral Chapel Parish In early July two members of the Parish Liturgy Committee, Rick Ruhland and Rhina Schembri, came to Villa Carondelet to deliver a message from the people of the parish. In celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life the people of Cathedral Chapel were offering the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Villa a donation to use for necessary capital expenses or operational costs. Thanks to your gracious generosity, in just a few weeks the donations that came in exceeded what we needed to re-upholster the chairs in our chapel. You will be with us in prayer. ~Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Villa Carondelet
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world (James 1). Dear Parishioners and Ministers: A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC We are less than a week away before Labor Day weekend. Many of our students both public and private schools have begun a new academic year. Please continue to keep all teachers, staff, parents and students in your prayers for a great and peaceful academic year, and that the school is freed from any form of violence and/or drugs. The letter of James in the second reading identifies two great objectives for the purpose of religion: 1) To care for the weak (orphans and widows); 2) To keep oneself unstained by the world. Let us reflect the question: Who are we as a Church of God or as a parish especially here at CCSV? Why do Catholics leave the Church? Why do you remain or stay as Catholics? Last Sunday, I asked these two questions in my homily. In November 2014, Pew Research Center published a finding of a study identifying why Latin Catholics leave the Church and become evangelical Protestants. The survey finds that the movement away from Catholicism has occurred among people of all ages and socio-economic levels When former Catholics who are now Protestant are asked whether certain factors were important in their decision to leave the Catholic Church, at least two-thirds in most countries say they wanted a more personal experience with God. Other common reasons people give for leaving the church are that they were looking for a different style of worship or a church that helps its members more (http://www.pewforum.org/2014/11/13/chapter-1-religious-switching/). I further asked another question: Why do Catholics in the U.S. leave the Catholic Church? Bishop-elect Robert Barron wrote in the National Catholic Register identifies 4 points: 1. A majority of people disagree with Church s teachings on divorce and re-marriage, "gay marriage," contraception, and the ordination of women. 2. Bad customer relations. Many more said that their pastors were arrogant, distant, aloof and insensitive, and still others said that their experiences over the phone with parish staffers were distinctly negative. 3. Bad Preaching or homilies were boring, irrelevant, poorly prepared or delivered in an impenetrable accent. 4. The parish staff does not follow up or reach out to those that left the parish. Why do we remain Catholics? The readings provides for us the following reasons: WEEK OF AUG 30-SEPT 5, 2015 SAINTS, SPECIAL OBSERVANCES, MASS INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS SUNDAY, August 30: 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 8:00 + Jean Bardeau 10:00 Thanksgiving Mass from Claire Shetz 12:00p For All Our Parishioners 1:00p *Confession MONDAY, August 31 9:00 +Manny Bernal TUESDAY, September 1 9:00 + Sister Agnes Raday, 1st Death Anniversay WEDNESDAY, September 2 9:00 For All Our Volunteers; +Julie Roth; Thanksgiving Mass from Adriana Macias 6:30p Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena THURSDAY, September 3: St. Gregory the Great 9:00 +Angelito Guerrero FRIDAY, September 4: First Friday 9:00 James Oliver Shea 9:30- Adora on/exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament ( ll 12p) SATURDAY, September 5: Blessed Virgin Mary, First Saturday 8:30 +Hector Garcia 5:00p Thanksgiving Mass from Maritess Uy 1. Seeking Permission from All Donors Transferring the Donation Balance to the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart Sisters Last Sunday, I thanked those of you who participated to our one-time appeal celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life by supporting our neighboring religious communities. We received a total of $2700.00. The total cost to reupholstering the 35 chairs was only approximately $2000.00, Legally, out of respect for the intention of the donors, I asked for your permission to allocate the extra $700.00 to the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart Sisters. During the week, I have not received any objections from our benefactors. If you have any objections to this allocation, please call or email me directly (frtruc@cathedralchapel.org). Be informed, be interested, and be involved in our Catholic faith. We are happy to see you and participate in the Mass. God deserves an hour from you each week. However, please make an effort and show respect by arriving to Mass on time. Arriving on time reveals much about the importance we place on God and worshipping him. God bless. WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH In preparation for the Papal visit to Philadelphia, we share with you 14 Faith Facts that you may not know about Blessed Junípero Serra. Blessed Junipero Serra is scheduled to be canonized on September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He will become the first saint to be canonized on U.S. soil, and the first Hispanic saint in America. (This is the last of this series.) 14 FAITH FACTS ABOUT BLESSED JUNÍPERO SERRA 14 Datos de fe sobre el Beato Junípero Serra 12. When Father Serra died in 1784 he had established nine California missions, including two in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Those nine grew to 21 missions, from San Diego to Sonoma, founded by Father Serra and succeeding Spanish friars. Today, approximately 60 percent of the state's nearly 39 million people live in areas surrounding the missions, and El Camino Real, the road that Father Serra traveled on a tour of the missions shortly before his death. 12. 13. During a recent conference in Rome, Archbishop José H. Gomez discussed the importance of the upcoming canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra. Serra will become America s first Latino saint, and the first saint to be canonized on American soil. In order for his canonization to bear spiritual fruits in America, we need to start a new conversation about Father Serra and the missionary era, Archbishop Gomez said. 13. During his homily on Junípero Serra, Pope Francis praised the willingness of Father Serra to abandon the comforts of native Spain to spread the love of God in the New World. I wonder if today we are able to respond with the same generosity and courage to the call of God, said Pope Francis, during the Mass at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. The Mass was part of a daylong conference on Father Serra sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on May 2, 2015. 14. To learn more about Fr. Junipero Serra, visit www.stjunipero.org. I want to say one word to you and this word is joy. Wherever consecrated people are, there is always joy! Pope Francis
