Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the strong and heavy wind, not in the earthquake, and not in the fire, but in a tiny whispering sound. May we find enough quiet in our clamorous world to hear His voice and discern what He is calling us to do and be. Father Gabe is away on vacation. Until he returns, please enjoy and reflect upon the writings of the saints! If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness. We must keep ourselves in the presence of God as much as possible and have no other view or end in all our actions but the divine honor. ~Saint Charles Borromeo Jesus is happy to come with us, as truth is happy to be spoken, as life to be lived, as light to be lit, as love is to be loved, as joy to be given, as peace to be spread. ~Saint Francis of Assisi LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER ~ For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers Angie Alvarado Annie Doherty Beatrice Vasek Bill Corrigan Donna Corrigan Doris Dempsey Elizabeth Hauser Frances Wilkerson Jazzmine Peluchette Joanna Musacchio Jude Keith Hebert Lori Caldwell Mary Ann Kwinn Mary Ratkovic Melvin Peluchette Norma Aaron Peggy Keelaghan Rebeca Acuna Renee Harrangue Ron & Louise Wasilewski Ruth Smith Sr. Eileen Marie (Marleen) Corrigan Stephane Lempire Sue McLaughlin Victoria Mitsakos Yolanda Garcia ***Please note that this list will be updated monthly. Many times in life we look for God s saving presence. We look for Jesus to be the great rescuer - someone who will immediately lift us up from our struggles. But we need to take the time to reflect how God is now, or has been present to us. Such spiritual vision will help us to more readily call upon the power of God in times of need. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Elijah is seeking shelter in the cave, but God won t let him hide there. He is challenged to go out and look for the presence of God and finds it in unexpected places. The disciples too, want shelter from the storm and they find it in Jesus. Although they are initially shaken by the storm, they come to realize that the Son of God is in their midst. RCIA - AN AMAZING JOURNEY OF FAITH FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW Are you thinking about becoming a Catholic? Do you know someone who might be thinking about becoming a Catholic? Here is the chance to invite that special someone to an informal gathering to share and question whether or not the time is right for them to pursue becoming a Catholic. The process is called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community. We become a member of the Catholic faith by truly experiencing the life, the self-understanding, and the activities of the community itself. Please consider experiencing this process or inviting someone to join us for this amazing journey of faith. We begin with an informal gathering on Thursday evening Sept. 18th at 7:30 PM. Email Jonette at jonettemauch@gmail.com or call her at 310-670-2243 for more information. Fact of Life - Human Nature and the Image of God excerpt from speech by Archbishop Jose Gomez 8.9.14 In his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei, Pope Francis writes about this (what it means to be human), in almost poetic language. He writes: Once man has lost the fundamental orientation which unifies his existence, he breaks down into the multiplicity of his desires his life-story disintegrates into a myriad of unconnected instants an aimless passing from one lord to another a plethora of paths leading nowhere and forming a vast labyrinth. This is where we re at in our culture. We have disintegrated the idea of the human person and reduced it to whatever we wish it to be. And this cultural situation suggests a mission for the Church and individual Christians. I am coming to see that the new evangelization must include a new presentation of Christian anthropology- a new proclamation of our beautiful Catholic vision for the human person. God has entrusted us in the Church with the beautiful truth that the human person is sacred. That every man and woman is created in the image and likeness of God. On-Line Confirmation Registration Now Open! Confirmation Year 1 and Year 2 registration information is now available on-line on the parish website! Go to http://www.st-anastasia.org/ sacraments/high-school-confirmation and use the links and on-line forms to find more information and to sign up. Questions? The Lord is With Us Every Moment Remind young people that the Lord is not only present at church, but with us in every moment. If they do not have one already, consider giving them a physical reminder that they can keep with them throughout their day. This could be a prayer card to keep in their school binder, a saint medal to wear around their neck or even a rosary to keep in their pocket. www.la-archdiocese.org

Fall 2014 dates are now available for hosting the Traveling Holy Family Statues. Contact Regina at the Rectory for more information. Traveling Holy Family # 1 Summer Vacation for the Holy Family #1 Traveling Holy Family # 2 Summer Vacation for the Holy Family #2 Living Faith for Kids When the disciples saw [Jesus} walking on the sea they were terrified. It is a ghost, they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid. Matthew 14:26-27 Would you be scared to see someone walking on the water in the middle of the night? But Jesus was not out to scare anyone. In fact, he told them not to be afraid. Be not afraid is something Jesus says many times in the Gospels. He comes to us to save us from sin - something that is really scary because it damages our relationship with God. But don t be afraid; Jesus comes to us in the sacraments to give us courage and free us from sin. Jesus help me to overcome my fear of your power. 1 Kings 19:9, 11-13 Psalm 85:9-14 Romans 9:1-5 Matthew 14:22-33 SOCIAL CLUB NEWS Join us on Tuesday, October 7, for Monsignor Vadakin s Fall Bus Trip.
