JUNE 18, 2017 Stump the Seminarian Part 4 By Christopher Kelley This week, I will be answering a more personal question on my discernment, as well as a liturgical question. If you should have any questions that you would like to ask, as always, please feel free to email them to me and I will do my best to answer you personally as well as in the bulletin. My email is 83KELLEY@CUA.EDU. Q1: How did you gather the courage to do this/what are some challenges? One of the biggest parts of discerning that a priest I knew helped me with, and other priests as well, was the feeling of being alone in this discernment, a sense of being unable to tell anyone else because they couldn t understand it and I didn t know how to talk about it. Over time, I would also feel unworthy to even approach the topic because I kept thinking, who am I to think I am worthy of being a priest of Jesus Christ? Despite all of these thoughts, I was encouraged to find a Spiritual Director that was a priest who I could go to for Confession and openly discuss my discernment. The help of my Spiritual Director, the other priests I would talk to, and even my friends that I finally confided in would all serve to help in supporting me. In the end, I found praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament during Holy Hours of Adoration and Confession to be the biggest aids because it was in those moments that I could sense Christ s loving presence beside me and calling me directly despite my fears. My friends and family may not have understood but, that was OK; over the years I have noticed them asking questions to better understand, even if they perhaps don t agree with it. Q2: Why do the banners and vestments change throughout the year or on certain days? Throughout the year the colors for the vestments and banners will change to highlight the change in focus for the Church as it comes to celebrate its liturgies. Green is used during Ordinary Time, a.k.a. Time following a standard progression or order ; Red on occasions for Martyrs, the Passion, or the Holy Spirit; White is used during joyful celebrations or ones that reflect holiness such as at funerals, during the Easter and Christmas Seasons, and on various saints days that are not martyrs, and Baptisms or Weddings; and finally, Purple is used during the times of the year which call us to penance and forgiveness such as Lent and Advent - which is a time of joyful expectation and reminder of why we are in need of a Savior. Black is also used to focus on death and mourning, however, it is hardly ever used anymore because, as Christians, we prefer to focus on the Resurrection of Christ and the hope we will share in it. SUNDAY TV MASS FOR THE HOMEBOUND: Heart of the Nation televises Sunday Catholic Mass at 6:30 a.m. on WCTX channel 59 (MyTV9). Please share the time and channel information with friends or family members who are unable to get to church because of illness, age or other struggles. Please visit www.heartofthenation.org. On the Weekend of June 24/25, 2017, Fr. Paul M. Gins, O.S.M. of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites)-USA Province, will be at St. Joseph Church to talk about their missionary work in KwaZulu-Natla, Republic of South Africa. The Servites are one of the medicant orders and were founded in the 13th century in Florence, Italy. At the present time, they serve all over the world in every type of apostolate. The USA Province of Servites is responsible for the missions in KwaZulu-Natal. The main task of the missionaries today continues to be the proclamation of the Gospel and the establishment of viable Catholic communities. The idea that the people are the church is quite strong and participation in the liturgy and the work of the Church is very good. Other ministries include education, primary health care centers and providing funding to improve the water system to root out malaria. They are also ministering to the victims of the AIDS epidemic and the building of homes for these victims and other people of the area. They are in need of prayers and materials to help to carry on these ministries. God Bless you for your prayers and financial assistance. The last two weeks of the school year have been busy! On June 7 th, our 4 th grade class presented their state projects to family, friends and fellow classmates. On June 8 th, volunteer parents, working with Junior Achievement, spent the day educating students in grades K-7 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. On Saturday, June 10 th, our fifth grade students completed their Passages Program on the Windsor Challenge Course at Northwest Park. Passages is a program offered through the town of Windsor, working with fifth grade students for several weeks on confidence and team building concepts. Monday, June 12 th, students in Pre-K through grade 7 spent half the day visiting their future classrooms. This step-up day allowed all current and new students the opportunity to meet their future teacher and get a feel of what their day will be like next year. On Tuesday, June 13 th, our K-5 th grade students held their Field Day at Washington Park. Our Pre-K students have also been busy, celebrating Father s Day early with Donuts for Dad and celebrating their year end with a graduation for the Pre-K 4 and a concert with both classes. Grades K-7 ended the school year with a Mass and awards assembly on June 15 th. We wish everyone in the parish family a safe and fun summer! Registration is still being accepted for the 2017/2018 academic school year. School starts Tuesday, August 29 th, for K-8 and August 30 th, for our Pre-K 3 & 4. Call the school, or visit our website for more information 860-688-6401; www.stgabrielschool.org.

JUNE 18, 2017 The Religious Education Office is now closed for the summer. Have a happy and safe summer! Registration for 2017 / 2018 classes - If you have not yet registered your child/children entering Kindergarten through 10 th grade for Religious Education classes that will begin in September, please do so as soon as possible. The Religious Education Office is closed for the summer, but Registrations can still be submitted and students will be placed in classes in which there are openings. If you are new to the Religious Education Program, please contact the Religious Education Office. Registered families will receive class information in August. Parents, keep faith formation going through the summer! It s important to teach our kids that we don t take a summer vacation from God - June, July, and August should be a time of continued faith formation for our children. Just as parents work hard to make certain that our kids don t forget their reading and math skills during the summer, we must make certain that their spiritual development also does not succumb to Summer Slide. Keep attending Mass; when on vacation; use MassTimes.org or another app to find a Catholic church wherever you are. Continue to pray with your children and be conscious of the Holy Days of the season. The world doesn t need what women have, it needs what women are. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein). The Office of Education, Evangelization and Catechesis is proud to announce the Inaugural Women s Conference, a day celebrating women of faith in the Archdiocese of Hartford. Our 2017 conference theme is, "Be Strong and Courageous!" (Joshua 1:9). The conference will be held on November 4th and will include keynote speakers, vendors & exhibitors, Eucharistic Adoration, the sacrament of confession, and a closing Mass with Archbishop Blair. St. Gabriel School Summer Camp July 10 - July 14 July 17 - July 21 July 24 - July 28 July 31 - August 4 The hours for Summer Camp are 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Each week is $200 and runs from 9am-4pm, with before and after care available for an additional charge. Any questions, please call St. Gabriel School at 860-688-6401 or email spranaitis@stgabrielschool.org.
