There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." - Luke 10:30b-31, 33 Lord, I place myself in your presence. After the strain and turmoil of the day I rest quietly here, as a little boat, which has been tossed by the waves and buffeted by the wind, rests secure in a sheltered harbor. Here my projects lose their power over me. A healing process begins My fragmented self is reassembled, and I am made whole again. In your presence, I experience my true worth, Which consists not in doing but in being. PASTORAL STAFF Reverend Quy N. THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 17, 2016 Dear friends in Christ! May the peace and grace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! This weekend marks the midpoint of the month. The summer is moving quickly, and I hope that you set aside some time off from work to go away for some rest and relaxation. Taking time off from work for some rest and relaxation can be one of the priorities that we should have on our list. The gospel message for this weekend challenges us to think about what really is important in our lives. Our daily lives are made up of a round chores and responsibilities in which some of those things can be urgent. Our personal schedule is filling up with appointments, activities, or events. Each day thoughts run through our heads; worries and anxieties occupy our minds. Many of us can relate to Martha in today s scripture. While Jesus was visiting and reclining at her home, Martha was constantly working to make sure the important guest felt comfortable and enjoyed his visit. On the other hand, her sister, Mary, dropped everything, sat at the feet of Jesus, and listened to the words of Jesus. Her active listening and undivided attention that she gave to Jesus have made great impression to Jesus. That s why Jesus said Mary has chosen the better choice. The scripture message today challenges us to set aside time for ourselves. Our lives must have an equal balance between work and rest. It is a temptation for many of us to become a workaholic but we need our rest at times. When we set aside time to rest or to give ourselves a few minutes each day for quiet reflection on a scripture passage and pray over it, we will hear the voice of God speaking to us. Like Mary, may we choose to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to his words. Peace & Blessings Fr. Quy Vo Saint Mary Magdalene Feast day July 22 is one of the greatest saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God's mercy and grace. The precise dates of her birth and death are unknown, but we do know she was present with Christ during his public ministry, death and resurrection. She is mentioned at least a dozen times in the Gospels. Mary Magdalene has long been regarded as a prostitute or sexually immoral in western Christianity, but this is not supported in the scriptures. It is believed she was a Jewish woman who lived among Gentiles, living as they did. The Gospels agree that Mary was originally a great sinner. Jesus cast seven demons out of her when he met her. After this, she told several women she associated with and these women also became followers. She was a sinner whom Jesus saved, giving us an example of how no person is beyond the saving grace of God. During Jesus' ministry, it is believed that Mary Magdalene followed him, part of a semipermanent entourage who served Jesus and his Disciples. Mary likely watched the crucifixion from a distance along with the other women who followed Christ during His ministry. Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection. After the death of Christ, a legend states that she remained among the early Christians. After fourteen years, she was allegedly put into a boat by Jews, along with several other saints of the early Church, and set adrift without sails or oars. The boat landed in southern France, where she spent the remaining years of her life living in solitude, in a cave. Saint Mary Magdalene is the patroness of converts, repentant sinners, sexual temptation, pharmacists, tanners and women, and many other places and causes. - From www.catholic.org/saints Scripture readings for the week of July 17, 2016 Sunday: Gn 18:1-10a/Ps 15:2-5/Col 1:24-28/Lk 10:38-42 Monday: Mi 6:1-4, 6-8/Ps 50:5-6, 8-9, 16-17, 21, 23/Mt 12:38-42 Tuesday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20/Ps 85:2-8/Mt 12:46-50 Wednesday: Jer 1:1, 4-10/Ps 71:1-6, 15, 17/Mt 13:1-9 Thursday: Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13/Ps 36:6-11/Mt 13:10-17 Friday: Jer 3:14-17/Jer 31:10-13/Jn 20:1-2, 11-18 Saturday: Jer 7:1-11/Ps 84:3-6, 8, 11/Mt 13:24-30 Sunday: Gn 18:20-32/Ps 138:1-3, 6-8/Col 2:12-14/Lk 11:1-13 STS. JOHN THE BAPTIST Goal: $11,660.00 No. of Gifts:65 Pledge Amount: $9,670.00 Collect Amount: $6,390.00 Last Sunday s Good Samaritan parable concluded with Jesus command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha s hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary s hands-off as choosing the better part (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha burdened with much serving by herself (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence superior, but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries second-class discipleship? No; Jesus example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus two-fold challenge: both go and do and sit and listen. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM This weekend, our parish welcomed into the church the new member through the Sacrament of Baptism: Kaleb Howard Johnson We would like to congratulate him and the families on this special occasion.
