Member Profile Rabbi Yisrael Motzen, rabbi 1-410-775-6689 rabbi@nertamid.net Adam Klaff, president president@nertamid.net Gabrielle Burger, chairperson chairman@nertamid.net Max Jacob, executive director - rental coordinator 410-358-6500 maxjacob1@yahoo.com Mazel Tov Rabbi Mitchell and Amy Ackerson! How did you first hear about Ner Tamid? Technically we first heard about Ner Tamid on our way to our first Active Duty Army assignment at Fort Campbell. I stopped in Charleston, WV on the way down since one of my classmates had taken over the shul from Rabbi Landau and we talked about the the shul Rabbi Landau went to in Baltimore, Ner Tamid...and what brought you here? Our son Avidan was very active in the teen minyan so we were familiar with Ner Tamid and we really liked that Ner Tamid combined educational activities with social activities How long have you been members of NT? We used to daven in the chapel minyan for a number of years but we think we've been full members of the shul for about 3 years Where are you from originally? Amy is originally from Morristown, New Jersey ( and as my father in law Z''l used to say before Chabad came to town) and Mitchell is originally from the Bronx, but grew up in Woodmere, New York, a part of the Five Towns. What do you do for a living? Amy has taught everything from preschool (at NT Montessori) through grad school. Been a youth adviser, Hillel Director, and Hebrew school principal, and worked at the Steven Kaufman AIDs Outreach Project at Baltimore's Jewish Family Services and the toughest and most rewarding job she ever had was being an Army Wife. Mitchell has been a pulpit Rabbi in such hot spots as Fitzgerald, Georgia, Chattanooga, TN, and Bridgeport, CT. He served as a Chaplain in the US Army for 31+ years retiring in 2016 as a Colonel, Mitchell has been the Rabbi and Director of the Department of Pastoral Care at Sinai Hospital/Lifebridge Health for almost 26 years. He has also taught Jewish History at Beth Tfiloh and a host of other jobs to numerous to enumerate in his 60+ years. Anything unusual about you? We have two children, one living in Israel and one in Fair Lawn. Our son and daughter in-law in Fair Lawn have twins who are adorable and our daughter is getting married in Israel in December. We have one very cute dog named Louie who is a bichon/poodle mix. Mitchell has made it to 48 of the 50 States and didn't get to make it to the Dakotas and Mt Rushmore as he had hoped this summer. Mitchell was the longest serving Reserve Jewish Chaplain in a combat zone since WWII. He has secretly always wanted to be a tour guide and hopes to fulfill that dream while in Israel. What inspired you to make Aliyah? For Amy it was her first trip to Israel when she was 16 years old where she connected with her Judaism in a truly personal way that she first thought about aliyah and now it was just time to be a Jew in a Jewish Country. For Mitchell it is a an opportunity to support Israel in a different way and to finally live a full immersive Jewish life in the Jewish Homeland while having some fun and time to do some learning.
