Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life Trinity Hall Chapel Lent Term 2019

Welcome to the Chapel The chapel exists for every member of Trinity Hall and is available for private prayer, or simply quietness and reflection, any hour of the day or evening outside service times. Much of the information you may need for services is in this term card. Hymns, readings, and details of anthems and the organ voluntaries may be found in date order in the music list, from page 3. The words of the anthems, and any translations, can be found from page 8. Services are according to the rites of the Church of England, but all members of Trinity Hall and their guests are welcome to attend services. Anyone who receives communion in their own church, whether they are Anglican or not, is invited to receive communion in chapel. There is no dress code and it is not necessary to wear a gown. The Revd. Dr. Stephen Plant is the Dean. As well as charge of chapel, he has pastoral responsibility for the whole college (irrespective of belief). The Dean is available at any time by appointment and you are welcome to contact him at any time to raise any matter of concern in the strictest confidence. His room is C3, his network phone is 332548, and his email is sjp27@cam.ac.uk Sunday Services 9am 6pm Eucharist (), followed by breakfast. Choral Evensong, followed by drinks in Room C3 Weekday Services 8:30-8:45 am The chapel is set aside for morning prayer each day of the week. Any member of College, their families and guests, are welcome to attend any service in chapel, irrespective of their beliefs. Details of all services are found on the following pages. 2

TEXTS FOR S & MOTETS Sunday 20 January Panis angelicus fit panis hominum; Dat panis cœlicus figuris terminum: O res mirabilis! Manducat Dominum pauper, servus et humilis. Thus Angels' Bread is made the Bread of man today: the Living Bread from heaven with figures dost away: O wondrous gift indeed! the poor and lowly may upon their Lord and Master feed. St Thomas Aquineas (1225-74) Sunday 27 January There shall a Star from Jacob come forth, and a Sceptre from Israel rise up, and dash in pieces princes and nations. How brightly beams the morning star! With sudden radiance from afar with light and comfort glowing! Thy Word, Jesus, inly feeds us, Rightly leads us, Life bestowing Praise, oh praise such love o erflowing. Numbers 24. 17 Psalm 2.9 Sunday 10 February O Lord, in thy wrath rebuke me not: neither chasten me in thy displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak: O Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore troubled: but, Lord, how long wilt thou punish me? O save me, for thy mercy's sake. Psalm 6. 1-4 8

Sunday 17 February My shepherd is the living Lord nothing therefore I need: in pastures fair, with waters calm he sets me for to feed. He did convert and glad my soul, and brought my mind in frame: to walk in paths of righteousness, For his most holy name. Through all my life thy favour is, so frankly showed to me: that in thy house for evermore my dwelling place shall be. Psalm 23. 1-3 & 6 from Thomas Stenhold s The Whole Book of Psalms Collected into English Meter, 1562 Sunday 24 February I am the Resurrection and the Life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. I know that my redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another. We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord. Burial Sentences Book of Common Prayer, 1662 Sunday 3 March Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a Way, as gives us breath: Such a Truth, as ends all strife: Such a Life, as killeth death. Come, My Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a Light, as shows a feast: Such a Feast, as mends in length: Such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a Joy, as none can move: Such a Love, as none can part: Such a Heart, as joys in love. George Herbert (1593-1633) 9
