LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Citizens should co-operate to implement plastic ban Sir, The ban on one-time-use plastic items is a welcome measure. The public should cooperate with the govt. to successfully implement it as it is good for the environment. It is indeed refreshing to see many already using cloth and paper bags for shopping and other needs. I hope there will be no more dumping of plastic waste in dustbins, road margins and waterways. I appreciate the State s move in this direction. Improving cleanliness in temples Sir, In most temples, one will find the priest giving vibhuthi/kumkum as prasadam to all devotees. They only use a small portion to put on their forehead and discard the balance. These leftovers accumulate and make the temple praharam and its surroundings dirty. The temple authorities should take steps to avoid this practice and instead allow the devotees to take the minimum quantity required by themselves. V.S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Appeal for another bus stop on 11th Avenue Sir, MTC buses on routes 11G/11H/12G/49A that ply via Ashok Nagar stop at Ashok Pillar. After the introduction of one-way traffic around the Udhayam Theater and TNHB Complex these buses have been diverted via 11th Avenue to ease traffic congestion. In the diverted section, the distance between Sangamam Hotel stop on 7th Avenue and Ashok Nagar HIG stop on 11th Avenue is more than a kilometer. With the increasing number of commuters on this stretch, particularly school children and senior citizens, it will be convenient if there is one more stop in-between these two stops. I have written in this regard to MTC, but so far, there has been no reply. S. Sambamurthy, 58/9, First Link Street, Ragava Colony, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 88707 92754 DTH tariff may increase from next month Sir, The new tariff regime imposed by the regulatory authority TRAI for DTH (direct-tohome) and cable TV networks is likely to come into force from February. At the moment, I have subscribed for all the channels and my service provider is SCV through a local cable TV operator. I pay Rs. 350 per month all inclusive for viewing all channels. According to my cable TV operator, under the new tariff plan of TRAI, I will have to shell out Rs. 944 per month. However, realizing the impact it can cause in terms of drop in viewership and loss of revenue, the individual TV channels have started to drop their rates or are giving a concessional rate for the entire bouquet of their channels. A clearer picture will emerge by the end of this month and I hope that it will eventually be driven by market dynamics and the consumers may not be burdened by a high increase in tariff. P. K. Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, 98402 93321 Plastic ban creates chaos Sir, Banning of single-use-plastic items is a welcome measure. But the sudden ban on it without a proper and cheap alternative is having an impact on consumers and small traders. Plastic accelerated the growth of trade by helping to transport liquid items and its utility cannot be questioned, though it had adverse effects. One way to mitigate its effects is to avoid littering freely and collect and destroy it safely without affecting the biodiversity. Banning abruptly and struggling to find a substitute and that too all of a sudden has thrown the traders and public into utter confusion. The ban should have been done after examining the issue with experts and assessing the practicability of its implementation. N. Rajagopalan, West Mambalam Cookery, rangoli contests on Jan. 22, 26 Oviyavarnangal (7 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar) will conduct cookery and rangoli competitions on Jan. 22 and 26 for women and children. Residents bid to save Somasundaram playground Over the years, many playgrounds in the city have disappeared. Now, some residents are trying to protect Somasundaram playground in T. Nagar from being used for dumping debris. After a portion of the compound wall was demolished recently, residents and cricket clubs have appealed to the Chennai Corporation to save the ground. Apart from local residents, people from across the city throng the ground. Many eminent cricketers have played in this ground and, even today, the play area becomes full on weekends, said A. B. Muthukumar, a resident of the locality. However, residents claimed that on Dec. 29, a few persons came and parked a cement mixer vehicle near the Aavin booth close to the ground. On the same night, they demolished a wall on adjoining Rajachar Street to the extent of 10 feet, they added. Following this, a ramp from the street to the ground was constructed for lorries to enter. We protested against this. There was no response, added another resident. The residents fear that the contractors of the Smart City project are trying to dump debris in the ground. If we allow this now, the entire ground will be destroyed in a matter of weeks and the children will be left in the lurch. This is one the few playgrounds left in the city. We do not need a concrete jungle inside the ground that may hurt children, he added. The residents and The Young Stars Cricket Association have written to the Chennai Corporation Commissioner to take action. We have even lodged a police complaint and after that no move has been made to dump debris till now, added another resident. Page 5 Sells decorative pots for Pongal G.
