August 20, 2017 Prelude: Announcements TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH Stevens Point, Wisconsin Ministers: Every Baptized Member ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Today s Liturgy uses ELW Setting 8 *Brief Order for Confession and Forgiveness 9:00 a.m. P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for prayer and reflection. Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves in to the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. *Gathering Hymn: Gather Us In ELW #532 *Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. *Kyrie (congregation sings the refrain) (Kyrie eleison means Lord, have mercy in Greek.) Cantor (sings the verses) For peace in the world, for the health of the church, for the unity of all; for this holy house, for all who worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord, let us pray to the Lord. (Refrain) That we may live out your impassioned response to the hungry and the poor; that we may live out truth and justice and grace, let us pray to the Lord, let us pray to the Lord. (Refrain) For peace in our hearts, for peace in our homes, for friends and family; for life and for love, for our work and our play, let us pray to the Lord, let us pray to the Lord. (Refrain) For your Spirit to guide; that you center our lives in the water and the Word; that you nourish our souls with your body and blood, let us pray to the Lord, let us pray to the Lord. *Prayer of the Day *Gospel Acclamation God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion and constancy, that your name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Children s Lesson First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6 8 1 Thus says the LORD: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 6 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant 7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 8 Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered. Psalm 67 (Read responsively) L: May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us C: So that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. L: May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. C: May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. L: May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. C: The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. L: May God bless us still, C: so that all the ends of the earth will fear him. *Gospel: Matthew 15:21 28 L: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 15. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon. 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. 24 He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 He answered, It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. 27 She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. 28 Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly. L: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon: Pastor Clay Schmit Hymn of the Day: Lord of All Nations, Grant Me Grace ELW #716-5- -6-

*The Masai Creed (1978) C: We believe in the one High God, who out of love created the beautiful world and everything good in it. He created Man and wanted Man to be happy in the world. God loves the world and every nation and tribe on the Earth. We have known this High God in darkness, and now we know Him in the light. God promised in the book of His word, the Bible, that He would save the world and all the nations and tribes. We believe that God made good His promise by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, a man in the flesh, a Jew by tribe, born poor in a little village, who left His home and was always on safari doing good, curing people by the power of God, teaching about God and man, showing the meaning of religion is love. He was rejected by his people, tortured and nailed hands and feet to a cross, and died. He lay buried in the grave, but the hyenas did not touch him, and on the third day, He rose from the grave. He ascended to the skies. He is the Lord. We believe that all our sins are forgiven through Him. All who have faith in Him must be sorry for their sins, be baptized in the Holy Spirit of God, live the rules of love and share the bread together in love, to announce the Good News to others until Jesus comes again. We are waiting for Him. He is alive. He lives. This we believe. Amen. Offering Special Music: The Potter s Hand D. Zschech Offering Prayer A: Let us pray. C: Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy...and join their unending hymn: *Holy, Holy, Holy *Prayers of the Church A:...For these things we pray: C: [sung response] P:...through Christ our Lord. *Sharing of the Peace P: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. -7- -8-

*Words of Institution *Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen *Invitation to Communion P: Taste and see that the Lord is good. Communion The table of Christ is open to all who believe. You are welcome to come to this meal. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. *Sharing Our Meal with the Homebound *Blessing *Sending Hymn: Soli Deo Gloria ELW #878 *Dismissal A: Go in peace. K E Y R E A D I N G S A P P L Y P R A Y E R INSPIRING WORSHIP ALL WEEK I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 Preparing for Sunday, August 27 Day 1 Isaiah 51:1 6 Day 2 Psalm 138 Day 3 Romans 12:1 8 Day 4 Matthew 16:13 20 Day 5 Galatians 2:20 Day 6 John 3:30 * Sunday readings in bold Jesus request in this Sunday s Gospel reading that we offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, sounds like it might require a certain level of commitment on our part, doesn t it? It seems to be asking a lot! The world around us, too, can place a lot of demands on us for our commitment, our time, and our space. It can often be overwhelming. Yet Jesus expectations for us in all things might be better received as Give it your all, or Present your whole self. God has promised to be with us and has given us everything we need, all the gifts necessary to follow, to share, to serve and to tell. So why do we still find it so hard to go and do where we are called? And how can we prioritize and put Jesus expectations first in our lives and our hearts? Faithful God, You have blessed the lives of your people with immeasurable gifts. We are grateful for the work you have entrusted to us in the world. Renew our faith as we go each day that we may know the Holy Spirit is leading and You are always with us. May our actions serve as a living sign of your love to each person we meet. Amen.
