First Grade Newsletter October 10 th -14 th 2016 Mrs. Frost Happy Columbus Day! We have set sail and are on the right course in first grade! Let s keep it up! Blue Reading Folders Your child s blue reading folder contains their weekly reading log and current seasonal poems. Please keep this folder at home all week. Folders should be returned on Mondays. I hope this will make storing your child s reading materials more convenient. HELP OUR SCHOOL Don t forget to save your Boxtops for education. I have a collection box in our classroom. Let s see what class will collect the most!!! October is national fire prevention month. Please check your smoke detectors and have a family meeting to discuss and practice your emergency exit process. We will be discussing fire prevention this week in class. The Phoenixville Fire Department will be visiting our school. In keeping with our school s policy, I can only hand out birthday invitations to the entire class, all the boys, or all the girls. National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Mark Your Calendars October 10 th Reading Logs are due October 13 th Weekly spelling and reading test. Students will also have a religion test. Curriculum Notes Math: This week, we will continue with Chapter Two, Addition Strategies. Please continue to reinforce addition math facts at home. Also continue to play the math games that have been sent home. Purchasing or creating math flash cards is also a great way to master addition facts. Don t drop your pencil to add using your fingers! Continue to reinforce the dot method of addition. This is an important math strategy that students will naturally phase out when they become more confident in their math facts. Reading & Spelling: Focus: Short e. Our whole group story this week is, Get the Egg! Our spelling words will be generated from this story. Our spelling test will be this Thursday. The spelling words were sent home last Thursday. Practice the list of short e sight words that are attached. Continue to practice your Dolch sight word booklets. We will continue to focus on fall poems to improve reading fluency. Please have your child practice reading these poems aloud to you. Grammar and Writing: We will continue to focus on sentences. We will discuss types of sentences, the parts of a sentence, word order, and correct punctuation. Encourage your child to practice writing complete sentences at home. Keeping a journal at home or writing a letter to a friend or family member are great ways to make writing fun while also practicing handwriting! Religion: We will complete Chapter Four, Jesus Works Among the People. In this chapter, we learned about John the Baptist, and we have discussed ways we can welcome Jesus. We also learned that Jesus treated all people with respect and shared God s love with everyone. Finally, we will learn that Jesus helped all those in need and reminds us that God watches over us and cares for us always. Our Chapter Three and Four assessment is scheduled for this Thursday. Students may bring their religion books home to reread and discuss these chapters. Please review the study guide with your child. Social Studies: This week, we will begin to learn about Christopher Columbus. We will set sail on a special voyage to learn more about this time period in our history. Science: With Halloween right around the corner, we will begin to learn all about bats! EEK! Don t forget Leaf Collection Projects are due on or before Oct. 29th. Batty Good! Chapter Summaries: Chapter Three and Four Study Guide Test Date: Thursday, October 13 th Chapter Three, Jesus Grew Up in a Family. We discussed how God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus. We also discussed that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and lived in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. Finally, we discussed how the Holy Family obeyed the Father and prayed to him. We talked about ways our family is like the Holy Family. Chapter Four, Jesus Works Among the People. In this chapter, we learned about John the Baptist and we discussed ways we can welcome Jesus. We also learned that Jesus treated all people with respect and shared God s love with everyone. Finally, we learned that Jesus helped all those in need and reminds us that God watches over us and cares for us always.
