8:30 & 11:00 am ORDER OF WORSHIP June 1, 2014 Seventh Sunday of Easter (In preparation for worship, please silence all cell phones.) Gathering Music Adagio Henry Purcell Community Life (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time.) Dr. Glenn Ethridge *Hymn of Praise O God, Our Help in Ages Past UMH 117 *Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 15:1-6 Dr. Amy Morgan Colossians 1:15-20 This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved: Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared first to the women, then to Peter and the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the firstborn of all creation, the firstborn from the dead, in whom all things hold together, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell by the power of the Spirit. Christ is the head of the body, the church, and by the blood of the cross reconciles all things to God. Amen. Morning Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Dr. Morgan Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Our Tithes & Offerings Love Enough to Give John Horman A mother lined a basket to keep her baby dry, then rocked him on a river, lest he awake and cry. She let a princess name him, her son that he might live. God s people had a leader. She had such hope to give. A mother sewed a jacket, lined in the softest wool, then dressed her little boychild, her cup of blessing full. She brought him to the temple where he would serve and live. God s people had a prophet. She had such faith to give. A mother laid her baby in manger lined with straw; then in the shepherd s story his call foresaw. She nurtured and taught him the way that he must live. God s people had a Savior. She had such love to give. Like Jochebed and Hannah, and Mary too, we know the hardest part of loving is learning to let go. So when we send our children out in the world to live, grant us such hope and faith, God, and love enough to give. *Doxology UMH 94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Sermon Moses: Spared and Paired Dr. Ethridge Holy Communion A Service of Word and Table II UMH 12 The sacrament of communion is a sign and means of receiving God's grace. Therefore communion, like grace itself, is available to all people without regard to age, church membership status, relationship to Oak Grove, or denominational affiliation. The table belongs to God, so all are welcome. There is a mobile station for worshipers who prefer to be served in their seats. If you prefer gluten-free elements, please go to the station to the left of the pulpit. You are always welcome to choose any station by simply walking to the station of your choice. Once you receive the bread, please dip it in the grape juice in the chalice. In our tradition worshipers do not drink from the chalice. After receiving communion you may kneel at the chancel to pray or return to your seat. Communion Music Holy, Holy, Holy Franz Schubert Men s Ensemble Holy, holy, holy; holy is the Lord. Holy, holy, holy; He s to be adored. He without beginning, we do ever love. Holy, holy, holy; praise to Him above. Holy, holy, holy unto Thee we sing. Holy, holy, holy; praise to Thee our King. Merciful and mighty, everywhere adored. Holy, holy, holy; holy is the Lord. *Sending Hymn Amazing Grace UMH 378 *Benediction Dr. Ethridge Father! to God himself we cannot give a holier name. OAK GROVE NEWS Diaper Drive June 1, 2014 Thank You, Oak Grove! Many thanks for the outpouring of support for our first church-wide diaper drive, sponsored by the Service Ministries Committee. Together with YCS and CDC, we collected over 4,000 baby diapers and 50 packages of wipes to benefit the United Methodist Children's Home and Caring for Clarkston (C4C), and 25 volunteers made quick work of sorting the contributions! These supplies fill an important need for families, who sometimes are forced to choose between spending up to $100 per month for diapers and buying nutritious food. You can continue to donate diapers, wipes, infant formula, and baby food on a regular basis in the C4C cabinet outside the Fellowship Hall. Oak Grove 2014 Memorial Scholarship Awards Applications for the 2014 Oak Grove Memorial Scholarship are currently being accepted in the church office. Oak Grove UMC should receive the application, transcripts and letters of recommendation by Monday, June 2, 2014. Application forms are available online at www.ogumc.org, or they may be sent to you via email. Please contact Dale Smith with your request, 404-636-7558 or dsmith@ogumc.org. Help Support Our Honduras Mission Oak Grove s involvement in Project Honduras is commencing once again! The 2014 team consists of 20 people led by Gus Pounds and Rob Brawner. The team will depart for Roatan, Honduras on Saturday, July 5, and will return on Saturday, July 12. We are seeking your support once again and welcome any blessings you can bestow on Project Honduras, whether through prayer or donation of supplies; all are needed and all are appreciated! The supply wish list consists of flip-flops, craft and school supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, clothing, and small stuffed animals. We also have a great need for lightweight suitcases that will transport all these excellent, much-needed donations (suitcases will stay in Honduras). Please leave your donations in the portico commons. Help Build HOPE August 2, 2014 8:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Church-Wide Service Project Ages 5-105!! Do you have a gently-used backpack that is looking for a new life? Please bring it to the portico commons by June 9, 2014. Thank you! Reception to Honor Janet Johnson Sunday, June 22, following 11:00 Service Janet Johnson, our much-loved Director of Traditional Music, came to Oak Grove UMC eleven years ago during a time of uncertainty. Since then, Janet's unique blend of talent, expertise, enthusiasm, generosity, nurture, and rock-solid Christian faith has resulted in a music ministry we believe is second to none. Our thriving adult, youth, and children's choirs, the Wesley Ringers, and the Oak Grove Orchestra, directed by Bucky Johnson, have come to comprise an integral and even essential part of our message of God's love and faithfulness at Oak Grove. Janet and Bucky, who will continue as our orchestra leader, have blessed us beyond measure, for which we are forever grateful. Janet is retiring from more than thirty years in full-time music ministry on Sunday, June 22, to travel, to develop her interest in child advocacy, and to spend more time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. While she will continue to share her musical gifts by singing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Choir, directing the Southern Star Music Festivals with Bucky, and by leading All State and honor choirs, June 22 marks a significant turning point in Janet's life. We will celebrate Janet's ministry at Oak Grove on Sunday, June 22 with a reception for Janet in the church parlor immediately following the 11 o'clock service. Janet will also be in the parlor to receive well wishers from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. that day. Janet has touched our lives in so many wonderful ways, and we hope you can be present to help us honor her love and service in the name of Jesus Christ.
