WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Gathering Time Hymn 392 Jesus, We Are Here Hymn 480 Take Me to the Water Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! As a church of hospitality we invite you, if you feel comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the welcome pad to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us for coffee hour following worship. Everyone please silence your cell phones. Prelude Variations on Nettleton Lynn Call to Worship God anointed Christ to console the afflicted. Come, let us worship the Lord our Comforter! God anointed Christ to emancipate the enslaved. Come, let us worship the Lord our liberator! God anointed Christ to bind up the wounded. Come, let us worship the Lord our healer! God anointed Christ to deliver the troubled. Come, let us worship the Lord our Savior! Invocation *Hymn 475 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (During the singing of the hymn, please pass Joys & Concerns to center aisle.) *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession We are precious in your sight, yet we often forget that we are your beloved. We confess that our love is fickle and inconstant. We follow selfish goals and deny that our way of life harms others and hurts your world. We are sorry and we want to change. Create in us a clean heart, strengthen our resolve, reconcile us one to another, and bless us with your peace. Amen.

*Silent Confession (A time for personal confession of sin) *Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news! God loves us. God forgives us. *Response Children s Time (Children should return to their seats until after the Passing of the Peace, when they will be dismissed to Sunday school in north basement room N109.) Service of Renewal of Baptism Sentences of Scripture Renunciation and Affirmation I ask you, therefore, once again to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we were baptized. Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do. Who is your Lord and Savior? Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his Love? I will, with God s help. As a sign of our connection to the historic faith of the Church, please stand and join in reciting our ancient creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by

the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Church universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Remembering Our Baptism Hymn 491 *Passing of the Peace Having received Christ s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying May the peace of Christ be with you! (Children are dismissed to Sunday school in the north wing) Anthem Waters of Creation Dunstan/Lovelace Prayer for Illumination WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD Scripture Readings: Isaiah 43:1-7 Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Sermon I Have Called You by Name Rev. William Hennessy WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD *Hymn 463 How Firm a Foundation Prayers of the People Offering Offertory: Variations on Foundation Lind

*Doxology (Hymn 607) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen. *Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord s Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. and now we pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD *Hymn 485 We Know That Christ Is Raised *Charge *Benediction *Congregational Amen Hymn 568 *Postlude Variations on Engelberg Lind *Those who are able, please stand.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who gave so generously in 2018! Specifically, thank you for sharing your heart with us through the Christmas Offering and the Special Appeal. You gave nearly $7,000 to the Christmas Offering, which assisted those children in tent cities and families who have been separated on our southern border. We selected two established agencies that are fighting family separation and detention with humanitarian aid and essential support. The services provided include shelter, transportation, basic needs, and legal aid. You gave just over $5,000 to the Special Appeal, which helped offset the church deficit. Thank you for expressing that you appreciate how vital the presence of North Presbyterian Church is for our community and for your personal growth as a Christian disciple. MEMBERSHIP: YOUNG ADULT GATHERING The Membership Committee is sponsoring social gatherings to promote our community. There s something for everyone to do around the church, so come out on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 9:00 a.m., and we ll be North together.

ADULT ED.: A RESPONSE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. S LETTER FROM A BIRMINGHAM JAIL January 6, 13, and 20 at 9:00 a.m. in the church library You are invited to join in this three-part, relevant discussion of Dr. King s open letter, his response to the religious leaders in 1963. As people of faith today, we are compelled to respond to the themes of his Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Dr. King In preparation for MLK day, you might want to read King's letter written in 1963, available at https://www.africa.upenn.edu/articles_gen/letter_birmingham.html and come to one or more of the discussions. UNUSED OFFICES AVAILABLE FOR LEASING North Church has several unused offices that are available for leasing by suitable tenants. The rooms have been cleaned, freshly painted, and are ideal work spaces. Successfully leasing these rooms will generate additional revenue for the church and offset the expense borne by heating and otherwise maintaining these unused areas in the building. Not-for-profit organizations are ideal candidates, but other entities or individuals certainly will be considered. The vetting process includes a review of any potential tenant and approval by Session prior to the signing of a lease. If you know of an individual or organization looking for reasonably priced space, please contact the Church Office at 716.632.1220 or n.church@verizon.net with the information and someone will follow-up on the lead. ADULT BIBLE STUDY Adult Bible Study meets each Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Currently, we are studying themes from the Bible. Facilitators are volunteers. No books, study guides, or other preparations are required.
