Bishop Robert Barron s CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. St. Francis of Assisi, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason at not at odds, as they come from the same source. St. Catherine of Siena, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond. Blessed John Henry Newman, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith. G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity. Michelangelo, the Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God. Journey with Bishop Barron to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players. This program is free to attend. Page 6 January 1, 2017 Social Ministry Transformed by The Eucharist Reaching Out into community PORT Sigh-ups heading our way... PORT is an acronym which means: People Offering Resources Together. The PORT program is designed for interfaith congregations located in any area of Newport News to come together to open their parish or social halls and provide food and shelter for individuals or families who would normally spend their nights sleeping on the streets, in cars, or perhaps in empty buildings or in the woods during this winter season. Consider Volunteering This Year at PORT That s right folks, just around the corner as we begin our new year 2017, we will be having the big PORT SIGN-Ups weekend. Check your calendars, make arrangements, ready the teams. We will be signing up before and after all the Masses on: JANUARY 7 TH AND 8 TH PORT will be held the week of: February 1 8 Teams needed to cook/serve breakfast and dinner, check guests in and check guests out, and overnight shifts! In some cases items can be heavy to lift. Dinner: Volunteers for the Dinner group are part of a team. The team decides on the menu for their evening. Each team purchases the food, prepares the food and beverages, serves the dinner to the PORT guests, and proceeds to do the kitchen clean-up. After dinner, all leftover food is packed up and removed from the kitchen. Teams can donate the food for the evening or submit receipts to be reimbursed for the food expenses. Overnight: Volunteers serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to those guests who arrive after 9pm. Two Volunteers stay awake at all times to provide any necessary services. A staff member or PORT Committee member will be onsite at all times. A sheriff s deputy will also be on site at all times. This is the most difficult position to fill. Please volunteer here if you are able. Check Out: The checkout volunteers collect the bed rolls and returns the guests overnight bags. In some cases these items can be heavy to lift. Breakfast: This volunteer crew plans the breakfast menu, purchases the food and beverages, prepares and serves the breakfast, along with cleanup afterwards.
