Peachtree Road United Methodist Church August 31, 2014 Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost The Service of Holy Communion The Season After Pentecost, also called Ordinary Time, begins the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent. The first Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity Sunday and the last Sunday is the Sunday of the Reign of Christ or Christ the King. The season also includes All Saints and Thanksgiving. Paraments, stoles, and banners may show a variety of color, texture, and symbols in Ordinary Time. - Adapted from the United Methodist Book of Worship, published by The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville, Tennessee, 1992. Morning Worship August 31, 2014. 8:45 & 11:15 am the gathering Carillon Prelude Sally Westmoreland Opening Voluntary Choral Dorien Jehan Alain (1911-1940) At the sound of the bells, please prepare your hearts and minds for worship. The Choral Introit Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) Eat this bread, drink this cup, come to me and never be hungry. Eat this bread, drink this cup, trust in me and you will not thirst. Taizé Praise and Thanksgiving At the Procession,* Hymn 384 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Beecher The Invitation* Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Confession and Pardon* Let us confess our sins before God. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father. For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God. Amen.

Ritual of Christian Fellowship* ** The people are seated. Concerns and Celebrations of the Congregation We welcome each of you to this service! Please register your attendance on the Ritual of Christian Fellowship. Let us know if you are new, would like to become a member, or are interested in more information about Peachtree Road. We pray that this time together will be a blessing in your life. proclamation of the word The Lesson Romans 12:9-21 following the reading Minister The Word of God for the People of God. People Thanks be to God! Sermon Serve the Time At the Offertory, An offering is collected to support the work of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church sharing God s love with the world. Prayer Anthem I will give thanks Thomas Matthews (1915-1999) I will give thanks unto the Lord and I will praise the Name of the Lord most high. I have set the Lord always before me, for He is on my right hand therefore I shall not fall. Psalm 7:18; Psalm 16:9 The Combined Choirs At the Presentation* Hymn 95 Tune: Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join in their unending hymn: Sanctus* The people are seated. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He knew that he must suffer and die for the sins of the world. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from this all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood, for none who believe in him will be put to shame. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. Amen. The Agnus Dei

At the Administration, Choir Motet: Psalm 91 Scott H. Atchison (b. 1961) The people join the Choir on the refrain. Refrain: & b b c Ó Œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ bœ œb œ. Œ For he will give his angels charge o-ver you and keep you in all your ways. Refrain: For He will give his angels charge over you and keep you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up and your way will be free. The lion and cobra will hurt you no more, the Lord will bear you up. Refrain Trust in the Lord with all your strength. He will deliver you. Lean on thy God as danger nears, the Lord will hear your cry. Refrain He will reward you with increased joy and He will save your soul. Speak of your God as your refuge and shield. He will make you whole. Refrain He will provide you with peace and joy, your path will be clear.
