1 Sunday, January 6, 2019 - The Epiphany of the Lord JOAN MARTIN AND OUR PARISH HAITI PROJECT SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND: Joan is visiting her sponsoring parish during these next two weeks. During the Masses this weekend, she gave a brief update on her ministry in Haiti and her oversight of our parish twinning project there. The scheduled second collection in support of Joan, our Haiti minister, and our Haiti project was received at all Masses. Parishioners who may have missed the opportunity and who want to make a contribution, may use the special pew envelope or their OneParish app to do so. EPIPHANY AND LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES: The Epiphany event is very much about God s manifestation of Himself through the Child Jesus to the gift-bearing astrologers, and their journey back to their own country away from the ways of Herod as missionary disciples of the Christmas manifestation of Jesus. Through the gift of our own baptism and our living faith, we are called likewise to be missionary disciples, manifesting the presence of God in our lives on a daily basis. As our parish enters in this New Year, and concludes its sixtieth anniversary on May 10 th, our call to live as missionary disciples will continue to be an intentional focus. We grow as missionary disciples when we acknowledge God s ongoing manifestation/epiphany through an ongoing encounter with Jesus Christ, through Word, community, Sacrament and loving service. What is in italics, of course, is the core of our Parish Mission Statement. The lead-in phrase of the mission statement is a clear call to living as missionary disciples...as missionary disciples filled with the joy of the Gospel, our parish proclaims an ongoing encounter with Jesus Christ through Word, community, Sacrament and loving service. A reflection question: How do I encounter Jesus Christ through the Scriptures, through the faith community of the parish and through the Sacraments, and especially through acts of loving service?? EPIPHANY RECOGNITIONS - ONGOING REVELATION OF THE HOLY: When God was revealed in the infant child in Bethlehem to the three kings, it was the beginning of an ongoing revelation of the Holy One among us. Our belief is that when we love one another as Jesus has loved us, we encounter the Lord in each other. The Mass as source and summit is an ongoing Epiphany - manifestation of the Divine Presence among us. In the Mass, God manifests Himself to us through His presence in the table of the Word and in the table of the Living Bread - the Eucharist. Parishioners are invited and encouraged to come occasionally to a daily Mass this year. Those who come regularly to daily Mass, come with a deep faith knowledge that God continues to reveal his Divine Presence through the table of the Word and the table of the Living Bread. The Mass is an ongoing Epiphany - the source and summit of our spirituality and the Christian faith. Come Home PERSONAL INVITATIONS TO ALIENATED CATHOLICS: The six-part after-christmas Alienated Catholics Anonymous (ACA) series began on Monday, January 7th at 7PM in the Parish Activity Center and continue for the next 5 consecutive Monday evenings. If you know of a person or persons who are alienated from the Church for whatever reason and who are basically inactive, would you please list their name, address and telephone number for a personal invitation from the parish to the upcoming series? It would be appropriate that you would let the person know that you have submitted their name for this personal invitation from the parish. Technically, in doing so, you are becoming their sponsor, praying for their positive response. Inactive/alienated Catholics who come to the series find it most helpful when their sponsor comes to the first session with them. Do not underestimate the power of this kind of personal invitation and support, when done in faith, it personalizes God s invitation and saving grace. EPIPHANY - MINISTRY MANIFESTATIONS AND REVELATIONS: The following names were submitted for recognition by members of the staff and ministry leadership. The recognitions are a part of the annual Epiphany Reception. Our thanks to all who are actively involved in the ministry of servant leadership in our parish. 2 EMERGENCY SHELTER THANK YOU: The five day emergency shelter in our Parish Hall during this past week accommodated thirteen families who were released by I.C.E. They were extremely well-served by our parishioners, especially by our Hispanic community. A special thanks to Rocio Zamora, Laura Stehle and all who worked with loving hands and hearts for serving our special guests with such great love during their hour of need. This prompt loving-response from the heart of our parish was a transparent community action of living the Gospel. The Red Cross provided sleeping cots and Catholic Community Services assisted in the oversight of this collaborative lovingaction. POPE FRANCIS A MAN OF HIS WORD: Imagine traveling the world with Pope Francis as he shares words of peace and encouragement with the crowds, riding in the popemobile with him, or simply sitting in a quiet room as he looks directly into your eyes and speaks from his heart about hope, love, care for the earth, the poor, the migrants, the importance of families, and living a simple, joyful life. You are all invited to see this remarkable film about our Pope - don t miss it! Sunday, January 13th at 1:45pm in the PAC auditorium. Scripture Reflection The Epiphany of the Lord, January 6, 2019 Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12 We Three Kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar have you thought about the Magi? What they actually did and why? They saw a new object in the sky. A new star to them, which symbolized the birth of a new ruler. So they started searching for this new king. The star led them westward to Judea where they lost the star. The Magi, being in a foreign country, had to identify themselves and they asked King Herod where this newborn king might be. Herod was not happy that there a newborn king that he didn t know about. So he called his important people around him to help figure out where this baby might be. They narrowed it down to Bethlehem, based on prophesy from Micah 5:2 (remember from December 23rd?) Herod sent the Magi on their way to find this baby, telling them to let him know once they ve found him, so he could pay the baby homage too. Once the Magi were back on their way, the star led the way to the house where Mary and the baby were staying. They did pay homage, prostrating themselves to him. They then gave the family gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But instead of going back to Herod, to tell him where the new king was, God warned them in a dream to take a different route home, which they did. This is the second time in recent readings that God has sent messages in dreams. First, to Joseph that it was ok to take Mary and her unborn baby into his home and now to the Magi. Do we still receive messages from God in our dreams? Do we and not recognize them? Maybe we hear from God a lot more often than we re aware because we don t listen to the quiet voice in the breeze like Isaiah heard or we don t notice the odd burning bush like Moses or we don t pay attention to our dreams. For this new year, try paying attention to your dreams. Not in a new age-y way to try to interpret them, but just to see if God has been talking to you. Just note down what you ve dreamed in your journal and see if there s any patterns. Pray for guidance. God always answers prayers: Yes, No, or Not Now Now, go enjoy some King s Cake! DID YOU KNOW... Do you know what a King s Cake is? It s a cake or puff pastry, iced in purple, green and gold that has a figurine of the baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby Jesus gets privileges as King or Queen for the day or responsibilities to throw a party. This cake has many varieties and is popular all over the Christian world. 7th ADULT FAITH FORMATION CALENDAR FOR THE MONTH 8/9th 13th 15-16th Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody Starting January 15, 2019, a new 6-week faith sharing session focusing on the book by Allen Hunt, Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody.
