Good Morning and Welcome! You had lots of choices this Sunday, and we are so glad that you are here with us! We want to connect with you at your speed and in your way. Please take a moment to complete a Connect Card from the seatback in front of you, and bring it by the info center to receive a special gift. About Us ~ We follow Jesus Christ, believing that he not only provided a way for us to have peace with God, but gave us an example of how we should live. Our doors and arms are open humbly and joyfully to anyone who wants to learn with us how to follow Jesus Christ as Lord. As we say, "Grace happens here." Kids & Babies ~ During our Modern Worship service, our nursery is fully staffed to care for children from birth through 3 years old, while kids in pre-k through grade 5 are encouraged to join Little Eden Kids Church for a special worship time of their own. Parents can register children in the Kids Courtyard beginning at 10:30am. Pickup is immediately after the service. Courtyard Café ~ We offer coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice, and water from 8:30 11:15 am each Sunday. Please stop by and enjoy a cup O joe and catch up with friends. We invite you to stay between services to fellowship with each other and enjoy the beautiful weather! Did you know Jesus wants you to bring Him your burdens? Not just some of them, ALL of them! Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22

From the Pastor s desk A couple weeks ago a woman came to my office for counsel and ended up praying to give her heart to Jesus Christ. Hallelujah, amen. It s beautiful how God meets us in our brokenness and restores us. There really is no better hope for a life filled with love, joy, and peace, than spiritual transformation through faith in Jesus. This is why we slow down our faith conversations so they can be understood by anyone at any stage of faith. (Having slow conversations is not the same as having shallow conversations! Quite the opposite in fact!) It s a joy to explain our love for Jesus, and to invite people to become followers of Jesus. You ll hear people call that becoming a Christian, or accepting Jesus, or putting your faith in Christ. You might also hear people talk about praying the sinner s prayer, or getting right with God, or just, getting saved. It all means the same thing. And like I told the woman in my office, it s not about the words you say, it s about your heart turning to the Lord. Throughout the years, churches have invited people to respond to the Gospel in various ways. A couple hundred years ago the altar call became popular, where an invitation was given for people to come to the stage and receive prayer. (Picture the Billy Graham Crusades.) These days it s common to ask people to raise their hand, or stand to their feet as an indication of their decision. Many churches have a card where people can check a box so they can follow up with them, often inviting them to a class where they can learn more, and make an informed decision. Here at Sarasota Community Church we do all the above at various times. But originally (2000 years ago) the invitation was to be baptized, as in, right here, right now. It was immediate. People didn t go forward to an altar, they went into the water and got baptized. They didn t take a class, they took steps into the water to be baptized. They didn t check a box, they checked their pride and got baptized. That was the sign. It was public. It was definitive. It left them wet. It left a mark. It was the beginning of life as a follower of Jesus Christ. Have you been baptized? If not, respond to this invitation to become a baptized follower of Jesus Christ. We are planning a baptism service for February 24. Let me know so that we can include you in the celebration! Email info@sarasotacommunitychurch.org or sign up at the info booth. How to Care without Being Crushed Pastor Roger Shenk (You can stop by the Info Center & order a DVD or CD for $3)

Further Study HOW TO CARE WITHOUT BEING CRUSHED We've all experienced what it's like to help a friend carry their burden. You help them work through emotional distress, or financial, or relational, or physical. We ve all needed a shoulder to lean on, and we ve all been that shoulder to someone else. That's good. But what about when we feel overextended, take advantage of, and crushed by their burdens? It s all too common. In fact, self-protection is why many people just stop helping. Scripture tells us that when we carry each other's burdens we fulfill love. This is good. But it also tells us that each person should carry their own load. At first glance it looks like a contradiction, but it's actually great insight. The principle is this: Help carry the burden, but don't own the load. At the end of every day, we each go to bed carrying our own load, responsible to God for our own actions. We reap what we sow, and others reap what they sow. This is not harsh, it s reality. When we overlook this truth we get crushed by other people's burdens. But when we learn to walk with people and not for them, we show great love and compassion that can be sustained. This Week Read 1 John 3:16-18, Romans 14:7-12, Acts 4:32-35, and Galatians 6:1-10 Think about a time you helped carry someone else's burden and it became so heavy you felt crushed by it. Remember the satisfaction, but also remember the resentment. Has it made you reluctant to help others? Is anyone looking to you for help right now? Is the burden best described as injustice, or as consequences of their own actions? The nature of the burden determines how we help. Are you trying to right injustice, or redeem the consequences? Make sure your help addresses the right burden. Imagine a preferred future for that person where they have become mature, wise, and stable. Is the help you re offering setting them up for that future? At the end of every day, who owns the load? When we become enmeshed in someone else's burdens we often neglect our own. In what ways are you neglecting yourself? Commit the other person s burden to the Lord in prayer, then remember to carry your own load.
