Where his contemporary, Nelson Mandela, was great beyond the whites' deserts in building a post-apartheid nation, Mr Gorbachev was great beyond the deserts of the Soviet Union (and perhaps even of the west, which could barely understand or trust him) in proposing a way for the despotic world to aspire to democratic governance, freely organised civil society and rule of law. That he failed, he keenly knows. Our best hope is that his ideas, in time, succeed." Shultz, former Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury of the United States "Gorbachev was on the right side of history. One day the Russian people will recognize that they have as much reason to be grateful to him as do the rest of us. This important book explains why." Sir Malcolm Rifkind, former Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary of the United Kingdom "Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev recounts his reaction to events over the past quarter century, from the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the Russian Federation, to the revival of Cold- War-like confrontation with the West and the return of authoritarian governance in Russia itself. Gorbachev deplores the fact that Russia has deviated from the path to democracy that was the aim of his perestroika, but also points out that U.S. and Western policies have contributed to the current Cold War atmosphere. Gorbachev s The New Russia is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand why the 'Europe Whole and Free' that Gorbachev and his Western partners tried to create still eludes us. His suggestions for a return to East-West cooperation and for a resumption of democratic reform in Russia itself are timely and much needed." Jack F. Matlock, former United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia

THE NEW RUSSIA BY MIKHAIL GORBACHEV PDF After years of rapprochement, the relationship between Russia and the West is more strained now than it has ever been in the past 25 years. Putin's motives, his reasons for seeking confrontation with the West, remain for many a mystery. Not for Mikhail Gorbachev. In this new work, Russia's elder statesman draws on his wealth of knowledge and experience to reveal the development of Putin's regime and the intentions behind it. He argues that in order to further his own personal power, Putin has corrupted the achievements of perestroika and created a system which offers no future for Russia. Faced with this, Gorbachev advocates a radical reform of politics and new fostering of pluralism and social democracy. Gorbachev's insightful analysis moves beyond internal politics to address wider problems in the region, including the Ukraine conflict, as well as the global challenges of poverty and climate change. Above all else, he insists that solutions are to be found by returning to the atmosphere of dialogue and cooperation which was so instrumental in ending the Cold War. This book represents the summation of Gorbachev's thinking on the course that Russia has taken since 1991 and stands as a testament to one of the greatest and most influential statesmen of the 20th century. A fascinating blend of history, current events, politics and autobiography from one of the great leaders of our time By Elisa 20 I'll be honest. I don't understand the low ratings for this book. I can be tough on books, too, especially when they're sloppy history or purposefully filled with inaccuracies and self-serving claims. There are plenty of books--plenty!--by political leaders (and their aides) who lived during the time period that Gorbachev writes about (1980s to the present). But this book isn't one of them. For me--perhaps a disclaimer as a Gorbachev fan--this book, part memoir and part critique--is special. That it is being shared with us by a major transformative historical personage who is still living, still writing, still working for democratic changes in Russia, makes it even more unique and valuable to read. Mikhail Gorbachev is one of those major historical figures--in my opinion, having the historical stature of someone like our own Franklin Roosevelt or Abraham Lincoln. It is shocking that in today's Russia, under former KGB-head Vladimir Putin, he is reviled for introducing democracy and reforms that were catalysts for the breakup of the Soviet Union and its authoritarian regime. (And nice to read his compliments for Khrushchev, a man whose image in the West needs revision, particularly for Americans--in an appreciation
of his leadership during the last year of the Kennedy administration. After Kennedy was murdered, Khrushchev no longer had anyone in power who could be his partner in reforming the U.S.-USSR relationship--changes that had been well on the way to ending the Cold War. I digress, but its important to note that Gorbachev, while critical of Khrushchev in some ways, also reminds Americans of his courage as an early reformer--and one whom Americans owe a great deal to, not only for his willingness to negotiate with JFK over the removal of Soviet missiles in Cuba, but also his agreement with Kennedy to negotiate and sign the world's first nuclear test ban treaty--something we are all beneficiaries of with no nuclear bombs exploding in the air or seas from then on, thanks to them.) It is shocking that, in Russia today, Gorbachev lives basically in public relations exile, with some people, including those close to Putin, saying he should be regarded as a criminal for the changes he brought to the Soviet Union. For readers here who gave this book low marks because a significant portion of it has to do with that time period in Russia (and the world) --and with the glasnost and perestroika that Gorbachev initiated--truly admirable and remarkably bold "changes from within"--perhaps you will reconsider. The 1980s/90s are not irrelevant relics of a time long passed. The changes in Russia then--including Cold War tensions and "empire-building": that were diffused by Gorbachev but have been revived under Putin (as in Ukraine)--make this book extremely relevant to those who want to understand Russian politics and government and how it is impacting the world today. Gorbachev begins with the time period in which he led the political and social changes that ended the Soviet system. His presidency was a great triumph, really for democracy and freedom over authoritarianism. But that was then, this is now, and the majority of the book delves into that--what happened following his government (he really doesn't understand why Yeltzin's heroic moments so built his reputation that even his chaotic and sometimes irresponsible governing style still leave him highly regarded in the West). The real point, though, is that in the years since perestroika, Russia has moved toward authoritarianism and away from the social democratic reforms initiated with Gorbachev. He regards this change with understandable sadness. Many Russian people, of course, are still grateful for what he did and how it positively impacted their lives. But for those who long for the old empire--with all that means--he is often reviled, (something he seems to basically accept with democratic equanimity as all part of democratic freedom of opinion.) It is this commitment to freedom--economic and political--and to democracy--that informs the majority of this book as he reflects on the "New Russia", particularly as it exists under Putin. Personally, I thought it was a fascinating read--part history, part current events and politics, part autobiography. See all 14 customer reviews...
