Adult Faith Formation First Reconciliation On Wednesday, January 9th, second graders celebrated for the first time the sacrament of healing. Wanting to reduce their anxiety, I wrote a play which was performed for them prior to receiving this sacrament. It involved the puppets JOY and ACE...parts of it went like this: JOY: Hi, Ace, why do you look so nervous? ACE: I am going to confession... my First Reconciliation and I am not sure what I should do. JOY: OK, ACE, let's do a little reviewing. First you should do a good Examination of Conscience. ACE: Do I have to go to the doctor for this examination? JOY: No, silly, you just have to think about the things you have done that you feel bad about and know you should not have done. You must feel contrite. ACE: What does contrite mean? JOY: It means you are sorry for your sins and want to set things right with Jesus. JOY: Yes, and when you are done telling your sins, then you will say your prayer or Act of Contrition. ACE: You mean the prayer we learned in class that has the line, "I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin." JOY: You've got it; good job remembering ACE! ACE: Yes, I understand; I won't forget. Thanks, JOY, for making me feel at ease about going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. JOY: Yes, being forgiven of your sins is a wonderful feeling. Remember to go often! It is a healing and joy -filled sacrament...just like my name, JOY...each letter stands for an important way to live: place Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last...then you will also have a grace-filled life. ACE: And I am going to live up to what my name stands for: A=Active, C=Catholic and E=Evangelist. An evangelist spreads the Good News and going to Reconciliation is Good News. I know I am going to tell everyone to go to Reconciliation often! Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator ANNOUNCEMENTS AT MASS need to be sent to our Director of Music and Worship, Katrina Welborn, by Wednesday each week. Thank you. If the person was abused as a minor but is now an adult, please contact: Office of Safe Environment, Diocese of Green Bay at (920) 272-8174 or 1 (877) 270-8174 (toll free) We always encourage you to report the incident to civil authorities. YOU MATTER TO US THERE IS HOPE! Health & Wellness Living Healthy is a Prayer STRATEGIES TO FIGHT THE COLD AND FLU Washing your hands regularly with soap and water, sneezing into a tissue, staying away from others who are sick and getting a flu shot are reliable methods for protecting your immune system. However, there are other tricks to try to stay healthy during cold and flu season. Sanitize your cellphone. Mobile phones often carry bacteria and cause illness. Cleaning and disinfecting your cellphone can slow the spread of cold and flu germs. Meditate. Reducing stress can protect your body against cold and flu. A study showed that mindful meditation was associated with shorter and less severe acute respiratory infections, such as colds. Consider zinc. Research has shown that zinc supplements taken by mouth can help to treat colds. It seems to reduce the length of the cold when taken within 24 hours after symptoms start. Dosage should be no more than 80 mg of zinc per day for less than two weeks. Exercise. Research shows a connection between moderate, regular exercise and a strong immune system. Working out is also linked to a temporary boost in the production of macrophages, the cells that attack bacteria. So, when you exercise the body is fighting off infection. 5 The Baptism of the Lord-January 13, 2019 Worship and Music Column Make the Ordinary Extraordinary Today, the Baptism of the Lord, marks the end of the Christmas Season and we move into a short period of Ordinary Time before Lent. I used to get really let down after Christmas ended. Growing up before I became Catholic, Christmas was over on the 26th and I would always be sad. The excitement was over. There was nothing to look forward to after the 25th. Etc. Now, there were a lot of other factors involved as well, but as I've grown in my Catholic faith and learned how long the Christmas season is, that sadness has slowly dissipated. Now, what about the season of Ordinary Time? How many of us feel like Ordinary Time just doesn't do much for us? Like there isn't a focal point of the season? Well, just like life, there isn't always a focal point. We get in ruts, become stagnant, no major life events near, etc. How do we find that spark in our faith and our lives?
