THE BAPTISM OF JESUS LUKE 3:21-22
LUKE 3:21-22 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As He was praying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You!

KEY IDEA: What you believe about God is one of the most important things about you as a human being.
WHY? Because you were created for relationship with Him.
1. You cannot have a relationship with someone you don t know.
MATTHEW 22:37-38 He said to him, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command.
2. You can t love someone you don t know.
JOHN 10:10 A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
3. You can t worship a God you don t know.
JESUS IS BAPTIZED
LUKE 3:21 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized.
Why was Jesus baptized?
MATTHEW 3:13-14 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. But John tried to stop Him, saying, I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?

THE SPIRIT DESCENDS

When Jesus was three, He didn't know everything that the mind of God the Son knew, obviously, or He wouldn't have been able to grow in wisdom
The Son did not live in and through His created human nature in such a way that the human became divine. There was the divine and the human unmixed, bridged by the Holy Spirit. John MacArthur

Why does the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus?
Why does the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus? To confirm to John the Baptist that He s the Messiah.
John 1:33-34 I didn t know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!
Why does the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus? As visible confirmation to all the people that He was the Messiah.
Isaiah 42:1-4 This is My Servant; I strengthen Him, this is My Chosen One; I delight in Him. I have put My Spirit on Him; He will bring justice to the nations. He will not cry out or shout or make His voice heard in the streets.
Isaiah 42:1-4 He will not break a bruised reed, and He will not put out a smoldering wick; He will faithfully bring justice. He will not grow weak or be discouraged until He has established justice on earth. The islands will wait for His instruction.
The father speaks
Luke 3:22 And a voice came from heaven: You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You!
The father speaks: 1. To declare that Jesus is one with and equal to God.
The father speaks: 2. To declare that Jesus is perfectly righteous and holy.
The father speaks: 3. To declare the pleasure of the Father in the Son.
Application 1. Worship and serve Jesus as your Savior and your God.
John 14:21 The one who has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me. And the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father
