Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multipleoccupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! I sincerely hope that this new year is finding you surrounded by the provisions of the advent values of hope, joy, peace and love. These provisions are not dependent on our circumstances, but are the gifts that live deep within us as those who follow in the steps of Jesus. Today is Baptism Sunday and we reflect on the baptism of Jesus, which many consider as marking the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus. In the next 3 years, Jesus would embody more fully the purpose of his life. As God incarnate, Jesus would teach, heal, and call all of us to enter into a new life. Our sermon series, Brand New, extends this call to us today. It invites us to see all things new, including ourselves, and to resolve this year to make this newness fresh, to make it count. Last Sunday we invoked a Brand New Attitude which accompanies this week s theme, Brand New Life. Baptism is the outward symbol of an inward change; this is something that we recall when we are sprinkled with the waters of baptism here at Cathedral of Hope. We believe that the life of Christ becomes a priority for us and that, by accepting that change, we are changed. Baptism is a tangible way in which we acknowledge that change and that choice, holding ourselves accountable on a daily basis. It was the same for Jesus. He, too, accepted the mantle of God s call, making relationship with humanity and God a priority. In our Scripture today we hear that God smiled at Jesus baptism and the heavens opened, declaring God s pleasure. The Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove, and a voice from heaven spoke, saying, This is my beloved with whom I am well pleased. A new life began. These words echo through the generations to welcome us today. We are God s beloved and we are called both to KNOW God s love and to BE God s love in our world, made real through our action of accepting the challenge of this new life. The message of God s love and forgiveness, grace, and healing is all about making all things new. We are new every morning and today yes, today each of us can step into a new life just by affirming our desire, and perhaps our need, to put the past behind us, and to accept the gifts that God s love provides. I am humbled to know not just to believe, but to know that God welcomes me as a guest in this house of God today, not simply to go through the motions of worship, but to find all things new - including a new life in Christ that can become a lifestyle choice every day. May God bless us all, wherever we are on life s journey, and may we know that our past does not define us and the future is yet to be revealed. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor IMPORTANT Neil s NOTE INFO Connect Center If you are joining us for the first time, stop by the Info Bar in the Connect Center to meet and greet with volunteers and staff, and to pick up a special gift from us to you. **Temporary construction of the Children s Ministry area will mean a relocation for childcare, Children s Church and Youth Group on Sundays: Childcare Children are temporarily relocated to the East Wing with an entrance outside to the right of the entrance doors. GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Andria Davis LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Isaiah 43: 1-7 Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz But now thus says God, the one who created you, O Jacob, who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 3: 15-18, 21-22 One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O God. The people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. This one will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. A winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into the granary; but the chaff will be burnt with unquenchable fire. So, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed the good news to the people. When all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, my beloved; with you I am well pleased. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch; CCLI License #123333 SERMON Brand New Life Rev. Dr. Neil G. WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. AT THE FONT WE START OUR JOURNEY This morning s Processional Hymn is a marriage of old and (relatively) new. The lyrics for At the Font We Start Our Journey were written in 1991 for the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut by British-born bishop Jeffrey Rowthorn. Rowthorn has held positions at Union Theological Seminary and Yale University Divinity School. The hymn tune this text is paired with was adapted from an anthem by Henry Purcell (1659-1695), one of England s most important pre-twentieth century composers. Purcell began his musical life as a boy chorister. At the age of seventeen he was appointed the organist of Westminster Abbey. In addition to countless anthems and choral works, Purcell composed a large amount of music for the theater. Toward the end of his life he was organist for both Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal. This majestic hymn tune bears the name Westminster Abbey in honor of Purcell s long association with that church. THE WATERS OF LIFE Our Anthem this morning is James Biery s stunning The Waters of Life. Biery combines an ancient Christian hymn, translated by the International Committee on English in the Liturgy for its Rite of Baptism for Children, with lyrical vocal lines hovering over a rippling depiction of water in the organ accompaniment. The three lines of text are Trinitarian: The voice of God calls us above the waters, the glory of the Son shines on us, the love of the Spirit fills us with life. GOD IS HERE! British Methodist minister and hymn writer Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) wrote the lyrics for this hymn in 1979 at the request of Russell Schulz-Widmar, director of music at University United Methodist Church of Austin, Texas. The words help us celebrate why we come together as a church: to offer praise and prayer, to preach the Word and participate in the sacraments, to foster faith and service, and to live lives that bring glory to God. The original music by Sheldon Curry is memorable and emotional with beautiful choral writing. Hope Day School This year, we will welcome Hope Day School to Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. The school will operate daily between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. It will be housed in the current children s center and will be extended to be able to welcome 90 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years. Hope Day School is the new name of Oak Lawn Child Development Center which has operated out of Oak Lawn United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. During the next couple of months, alterations to the children s center will done in preparation for its opening. A new playground area will also be added toward the front of the building by the flag poles. Hope Day School is an independent 501(c)(3) and will be responsible for its own expenses such as insurance, staff costs, maintenance and all related costs. It will also make a monthly contribution to the church to cover its additional costs. Please help us in preparing for, and welcoming, Hope Day School to the ministries and programs of Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. 7

Our first story focuses on what happens if we do not work well together. As Mihee became aware of her queer sexuality, she wondered what that meant for her spirituality. But instead of pushing her away from God, her queerness has brought her closer to Jesus. In Outside the Lines, Mihee shows us how God, in Jesus, is oriented toward us in a queer and radical way. Through the life, work, and witness of Jesus, we see a God who loves us with a queer love. And our faith in that God becomes a queer spirituality--a spirituality that crashes through definitions and moves us outside of the categories of our making. Whenever we love ourselves and our neighbors with the boundary-breaking love of God, we live out this queer spirituality in the world. C L A S S E S A N D G AT H E R I N G S 12
