CHILDREN AND BEREAVEMENT M O 2017 10am - 4pm (coffee from 9.30am) Bereavement is a difficult, but inevitable part of life, so being prepared and resourced to help children deal with the impact of death is essential for anyone working with children in churches and schools. Using these materials Jo Wetherall will give you an opportunity to reflect on some theology around engaging with baptism families and ideas on how to apply this material in your community. USING YOUR VOICE IN LEADING WORSHIP W M 2018 7pm - 9pm Whatever your tradition, ministers need to speak and sing with confidence in leading worship. In this evening Russell Burton will introduce some of the principles that will help you develop confidence and point you in the right direction if you would like to do more work on your voice. This is particularly useful to those relatively new to ministry, but helpful as a refresher to anyone who would like to give attention to their voice in leading worship. Russell Burton is the musical director of the Ross Choral Society and Director of Music at St Philip and St James Leckhampton. Russell was formerly senior lay clerk and chorister singing teacher at Gloucester Cathedral. Cost: 10 (free for curates) Venue: St Philip and St James Church, Grafton Road, Cheltenham, GL50 2DR GETTING THINGS DONE S M 2018 9am - 1pm Administration needs to serve the mission of the church, not strangle it. If you feel ministry is getting bogged down in administration, or are stressed about the complexity of stuff you have to handle, Ian Bussell will help you develop some simple systems to make administration run a little more smoothly. We will look at processing all the stuff (emails, phone calls, action points, new ideas, etc) into clear projects and next actions which you can have confidence will get done. Ian Bussell is Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Co-ordinator of Curate Training. He really does not like emails and paperwork so is keen to find ways for admin to free us up for ministry. Bring your top tips for others, bring your diary and to do list. This is of use to anyone responsible for their own administration and will draw from David Allen s book Getting Things Done. Cost: 5 (free for curates) Venue: Jerusalem Room, 4 College Green, Gloucester, GL1 2LR CHILDREN & FAMILIES FORUM S S 2017 10am - noon (coffee from 9.30am) 'Explosions, speed, motion, beauty, colour, wonder, amazement what s not to like about science?' Explore some of the activities from the new Messy Church Does Science book. Discuss how we talk to our children about the compatibility of faith and science. Led by Children and Families Officer Jo Wetherall, the Forum is for everyone involved in any aspect of Children and Families Ministry. These themed events are not talks, but an opportunity to learn from each other; sharing experiences, ideas and resources and praying together. Jo also provides information about new publications, initiatives, research etc. Being advocates for human flourishing, through initiatives which combat injustice, environmental destruction, exclusion and isolation DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CHURCH T O 2017 9.30am - 3.30pm As we live longer ministry to the elderly produces greater challenges. In particular providing spiritual support for the lonely, those living with dementia and the families and carers who seek to support them. Often a better understanding of the related physical and mental frailties can make it much easier to provide the right support. After an initial overview of ministry to the elderly, Dana Delap will lead a session on how to support those living with dementia and this will be followed by a review of how what we have learnt impacts the provision of spiritual care. We will then explore how we can make churches and our worship more dementia friendly. Dana is a vicar in this diocese with a specialism in this field. We would like to help train and resource more of our congregations, clergy and parish teams to feel confident in using digital media both to promote our churches and to share stories of individual faith journeys. Venue: See above Book: kclamp@glosdioc.org.uk 24 7 LEADING WELL These four one-day, stand-alone courses for clergy explore different facets of leading a church well; embracing both the inner life demands of oversight while also exploring the outer life prac cal leadership skills required to lead effec vely. LEADING WELL WITH YOURSELF T N It helps when leaders grow in self-awareness and understand their personal strengths and limitations. But of equal importance is working out how to operate within a role to maximise strengths. This day gives leaders tools for developing greater self-awareness and insights into how to work in a strength-based way. LEADING WELL WITH OTHERS T J Practically no leader has all the gifts necessary for leadership. But how do we lead well with others, identifying and harnessing all the gifts God has given the Church? This day equips leaders to engage people well, build teams which flourish and create effective structures within an Anglican context. LEADING WELL WITH JESUS T F This day considers patterns for a vibrant spiritual life drawing on wisdom from the saints of previous eras and explores ways leaders can better integrate and apply their own spirituality to all facets of their leadership roles. LEADING WELL THROUGH SHAPING CULTURE T A Shaping a missional culture is perhaps the most difficult leadership challenge. This day combines a strong model for understanding the influence of culture in shaping behaviours, with practical tools and ideas on how to bring about culture change. As such it has a profoundly missional function in forming God's people in our life together and in relation to those around us. In this half-day together we will consider reading, praying and preaching from the Psalter, and reflect on how this ancient book can shape the mission of the local church. Dr Tim Davy teaches Biblical Studies and Mission at Redcliffe College. He is also co-director for the Centre for the Study of Bible and Mission, a collaborative initiative of Redcliffe and Trinity College, Bristol. BEYOND THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE: SEEKING THEOLOGY FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES T F 9.45am - 1pm A day led by David Runcorn. Once upon a time, stories of talking steam trains on a (newly) nationalised rail system offered parables for the secure, benevolent ordering of the world under God. The author was an Anglican clergyman. Today we are seeking God through uncertainty, disorder and chaos. The day will particularly focus on the neglected creation poem at the end of the book of Job. Cost: 5 Venue: St Mary de Lode Church, 1 St Mary s Square, Gloucester, GL1 2TB Book: ibird@glosdioc.org.uk Pastoral Assistants KINGDOM VISION: A VOCATIONAL RETREAT FOR MINISTERS T - T A 2018 Where are you in your ministry? What is God saying to you? Have you the space to listen, to look, to ask those questions? Does God have a fresh vision for you where you are or somewhere new? Kingdom Vision is a retreat specifically focussing on vision and calling. A chance to stop, to pray and reflect, to be led in worship and thought, and to listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The retreat will be led by the Revd Catherine Williams, Selection Secretary at Ministry Division, London. C R Cost: 250 full board. Venue: Holland House, Main Street, Cropthorne, Pershore, WR10 3NB Opening new paths to faith MISSION SHAPED INTRO Mission Shaped Intro (msi) is a short six week course, suitable as an introduction to contemporary missional thinking for a parish, benefice or deanery. We hope to provide the course in several locations across the Diocese. If you are interested in exploring this in your area do let us know. The msi sessions explore: The mission of God as the foundation for any expression of church; How the Church might respond to a world of change and uncertainty; The need for fresh expressions of church to develop authentic community in a world shaped by consumerism and individualism; How fresh expressions of church are re-imagining worship; How to enable healthy discipleship and leadership within fresh expressions of church; Your response to the course and offer options to what you might do next. Investing in our engagement with baptism families to spark an amazing adventure with Jesus Christ ALL AGE FOREST CHURCH S S 2017 10am - 2pm Forest Church principles can work very well for all-age groups as the kids are often leading the way in terms of connecting with nature. While adults have become used to rushing from A to B, children are much more inclined to get distracted by interesting things along the way. At the heart of Forest Church is celebrating that getting distracted by interesting things in nature and allowing that to become a prayerful exploration. The event is designed for those who are actively exploring or developing activities or fresh expression outdoors. Children are welcome when accompanying attending adults and we shall picnic together, weather permitting. This event will be led by diocesan officers Jo Wetherall and Cate Williams. Venue: In your local place Book: cwilliams@glosdioc.org.uk (bring a picnic) Venue: Robinswood Hill, Reservoir Rd, Gloucester, GL4 6SX 12 9

Placing schools at the heart of our mission with creative connections between churches and schools Encouraging new and courageous ways of worshipping, in different places, which connect with more people Approaching the use, upkeep and future of our church buildings in bold and creative ways Enabling people to discover new depths to prayer and spiritual growth, individually and together Nurturing confident disciples to live out their faith seven days a week Sharing our stories in new and different ways, including through digital media THE GRACE NETWORK S O 10am - 2pm The Grace Network is a form of pioneering ministry based on enabling people to meet their human potential within small social enterprises. They want to see people reach their social, emotional, spiritual and economic potential by using the medium of business to develop, train and mentor people. Anyone is welcome and this visit will be of particular interest to those exploring the following: Social enterprise Food bank and/or furniture recycling Sports ministry Exploring discipleship with those who would consider themselves as faith explorers rather than committed Christians. See more at http://thegracenetwork.org.uk/ GROWING MESSY LEADERS S M 10am - 4pm An inspirational, all-age training day which will energise and empower your Messy Church teams. Bring your whole team to this hands-on, fun, fast-moving day which combines the leadership skills of CPAS and experience of the BRF Messy Church team to give leaders of all ages the opportunity to understand more of the practicalities of leading a Messy Church, developing a team and reflecting on their relationship with God. QUIET DAYS T O 2017 T F 2018 S J 2018 10am - 4pm Our termly Quiet Days are for anyone involved with parish ministry; we particularly encourage clergy to depart from their usual busyness to have some quality time for themselves with God. These days are guided but do allow time for reflection and to listen for God as our souls are shaped and renewed. They are vital for re-energising and re-focusing, and help to keep the balance in life between being and doing. Led by officers from the Department of Mission and Ministry. PREACHING FROM THE LECTIONARY: MARK S GOSPEL W N 9.45am - 12.45pm Mark beginning at the end with the tabloid evangelist. As the lectionary brings us round, once again, to the Year of Mark, a morning to explore and share wisdom and experience of preaching from this most earthy and immediate of texts, beginning at the end (which is where Mark s Gospel arguably needs to begin). Led by Bishop Humphrey, Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon, where his main teaching focus is on Pastoral Theology and practical ministry, together with Anglican Ecclesiology and Spirituality. He co-directs the Monmouth Area Leaders Course, an in-service clergy leadership module offered by the College. 10 Venue: Unit 2A, Brimscombe Port, Brimscombe, Stroud, GL52QQ Book: cwilliams@glosdioc.org.uk Cost: 10 includes lunch Venue: St John s Church, St Johns Ave, Churchdown, Glouc, GL3 2DB C R L Cost: 10 donation, bring packed lunch, refreshments provided Venue: Marist Convent, Front Street, Nympsfield, GL10 3TY Cost: 5 Venue: Trinity Cheltenham, 100-102 Winchcombe St, Cheltenham, GL52 2NW Book: ibird@glosdioc.org.uk 11
