Mark speaks, tells stories, and writes widely, mainly on the joys, trials and surprises of living the whole of life as a follower of Jesus in today s world. ABCD COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT T A 2018 10am - 4pm (coffee from 9.30am) Barnwood Trust will share with us their experience and tales of ABCD Community Development across Gloucestershire. An introduction to community building practice and how Asset Based Community Development is growing across Gloucestershire, with stories of how good ABCD practice is enabling friends and neighbours to get together to do the things they love, and make a difference to where they live. The festival is about bringing people together across our county to celebrate what makes us unique and what holds us together. It will provide opportunities for people to share their life stories and to learn more about the communities in which we live and work. We hope the festival will build new relationships and inspire our communities to forge stronger partnerships. The festival will be launched with an evening event in the Cathedral with Bishop Rachel and others. It will continue at the Cathedral during the day on Friday 18 th with keynote talks and workshops. The hope is that a variety of community events will then be held across our region. These events can be as small as a community picnic or as big as a music festival. Partners to date include the Barnwood Trust, Gloucestershire African Community Foundation, GARAS, Inclusive Church, and the Alzheimer s Society, with many more expected to join as planning progresses. CHILDREN AND BEREAVEMENT M O 2017 10am - 4pm (coffee from 9.30am) Bereavement is a difficult, but inevitable part of life, so being prepared and resourced to help children deal with the impact of death is essential for anyone working with children in churches and schools. Winston's Wish will provide insight into how children grieve and what support adults can offer. The day will also include input from serving heads and clergy who have experienced the death of a child, parent or member of staff. A market place will suggest helpful materials and children's books available to borrow from the Resource Centre, or purchase from Winston s Wish. If you haven't yet woven these into your ministry, join us. Josie Goodwin, who is a vicar in this diocese, will present the new material on funerals and help you think about how to apply it in your context. Also presenting is Richard Reakes, a vicar and previously a funeral director. Richard will lead a 'troubleshooting' session on the practicalities of funerals and working with funeral directors. USING YOUR VOICE IN LEADING WORSHIP W M 2018 7pm - 9pm Whatever your tradition, ministers need to speak and sing with confidence in leading worship. In this evening Russell Burton will introduce some of the principles that will help you develop confidence and point you in the right direction if you would like to do more work on your voice. This is particularly useful to those relatively new to ministry, but helpful as a refresher to anyone who would like to give attention to their voice in leading worship. Russell Burton is the musical director of the Ross Choral Society and Director of Music at St Philip and St James Leckhampton. Russell was formerly senior lay clerk and chorister singing teacher at Gloucester Cathedral. If you feel ministry is getting bogged down in administration, or are stressed about the complexity of stuff you have to handle, Ian Bussell will help you develop some simple systems to make administration run a little more smoothly. We will look at processing all the stuff (emails, phone calls, action points, new ideas, etc) into clear projects and next actions which you can have confidence will get done. Ian Bussell is Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Co-ordinator of Curate Training. He really does not like emails and paperwork so is keen to find ways for admin to free us up for ministry. Bring your top tips for others, bring your diary and to do list. This is of use to anyone responsible for their own administration and will draw from David Allen s book Getting Things Done. Jo also provides information about new publications, initiatives, research etc. Being advocates for human flourishing, through initiatives which combat injustice, environmental destruction, exclusion and isolation DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CHURCH T O 2017 9.30am - 3.30pm As we live longer ministry to the elderly produces greater challenges. In particular providing spiritual support for the lonely, those living with dementia and the families and carers who seek to support them. Often a better understanding of the related physical and mental frailties can make it much easier to provide the right support. After an initial overview of ministry to the elderly, Dana Delap will lead a session on how to support those living with dementia and this will be followed by a review of how what we have learnt impacts the provision of spiritual care. We will then explore how we can make churches and our worship more dementia friendly. Dana is a vicar in this diocese with a specialism in this field. LEADING WELL WITH YOURSELF T N It helps when leaders grow in self-awareness and understand their personal strengths and limitations. But of equal importance is working out how to operate within a role to maximise strengths. This day gives leaders tools for developing greater self-awareness and insights into how to work in a strength-based way. LEADING WELL WITH OTHERS T J Practically no leader has all the gifts necessary for leadership. But how do we lead well with others, identifying and harnessing all the gifts God has given the Church? This day equips leaders to engage people well, build teams which flourish and create effective structures within an Anglican context. LEADING WELL WITH JESUS T F This day considers patterns for a vibrant spiritual life drawing on wisdom from the saints of previous eras and explores ways leaders can better integrate and apply their own spirituality to all facets of their leadership roles. LEADING WELL THROUGH SHAPING CULTURE T A Shaping a missional culture is perhaps the most difficult leadership challenge. This day combines a strong model for understanding the influence of culture in shaping behaviours, with practical tools and ideas on how to bring about culture change. As such it has a profoundly missional function in forming God's people in our life together and in relation to those around us. In this half-day together we will consider reading, praying and preaching from the Psalter, and reflect on how this ancient book can shape the mission of the local church. Once upon a time, stories of talking steam trains on a (newly) nationalised rail system offered parables for the secure, benevolent ordering of the world under God. The author was an Anglican clergyman. Today we are seeking God through uncertainty, disorder and chaos. The day will particularly focus on the neglected creation poem at the end of the book of Job. Investing in our engagement with baptism families to spark an amazing adventure with Jesus Christ ALL AGE FOREST CHURCH S S 2017 10am - 2pm Forest Church principles can work very well for all-age groups as the kids are often leading the way in terms of connecting with nature. While adults have become used to rushing from A to B, children are much more inclined to get distracted by interesting things along the way. At the heart of Forest Church is celebrating that getting distracted by interesting things in nature and allowing that to become a prayerful exploration. The event is designed for those who are actively exploring or developing activities or fresh expression outdoors. QUIET DAYS T O 2017 T F 2018 S J 2018 10am - 4pm Our termly Quiet Days are for anyone involved with parish ministry; we particularly encourage clergy to depart from their usual busyness to have some quality time for themselves with God. These days are guided but do allow time for reflection and to listen for God as our souls are shaped and renewed. They are vital for re-energising and re-focusing, and help to keep the balance in life between being and doing. Led by officers from the Department of Mission and Ministry. PREACHING FROM THE LECTIONARY: MARK S GOSPEL W N 9.45am - 12.45pm Mark beginning at the end with the tabloid evangelist. As the lectionary brings us round, once again, to the Year of Mark, a morning to explore and share wisdom and experience of preaching from this most earthy and immediate of texts, beginning at the end (which is where Mark s Gospel arguably needs to begin). Led by Bishop Humphrey, Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon, where his main teaching focus is on Pastoral Theology and practical ministry, together with Anglican Ecclesiology and Spirituality.
