'Say that was a Drum Majo r for Freedom ' ATLANTA, Ga. (ff) The Rev. Dr. Martn Luther Kng Jr.'s admrers by the legons pad ther last respects to hs memory yesterday at ceremones n hs own smple church, flled wth whte and black frends and dgntares of hgh rank..outsde the red brck church, an estmated 8, persons mlled about n a heavy crush. nsde,, mourners took part n quet, solemn servces. At the front of the church sat Mrs. Kng and her four chldren. Her face veled, her head erect, she mantaned her composure even as she heard the voce of her slan husband sayng: f de, want you to be able to say that tred to love and serve humanty... f you want to say that was a drum major, say that was a drum major for justce. Say that was a drum major for freedom. Death nevtable The words were taped from Kng's last sermon, n whch he dwelt on the nevtablty of hs own death. Not long afterward, on Aprl, he was shot to death n Memphs, Tenn. The assassn stll s at large. When the servce was over, as the bronze casket was beng removed, Vce Presdent Hubert H. Humphrey, representng Presdent Johnson at the funeral, leaned over to offer a few words of condolence to Mrs. Kng. Outsde the church, a mule-drawn hearse was watng to take Kng's body along the frst stage of a trp that was to end at a marble crypt, bearng as ts nscrpton these words from an old slave song: ''Free at last, free at last, thank God Almghty, 'm free at last. Kng had borrowed these same words to conclude hs rngng speech on the steps of the Lncoln Memoral durng the 96 march on Washngton. Notables Attend Among the notables who attended the rtes were Jacquelne Kennedy, wearng a black vel; Sens. Robert F. Kennedy of New York and Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts; Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy of Mnnesota; former Vce Presdent Rchard M. Nxon, Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York, former Gov. Carl E. Sanders of Georga and Gov. George Romney of Mchgan. Even as the funeral servces were n progress, State Adjutant General George J. Hearn announced that Natonal Guardsmen from throughout Georga were beng arlfted to the Atlanta area. Atlanta had escaped the volence that beset major ctes of the naton after Kng's murder. Hearn.sad he dd not expect trouble but we ntend to be ready. Hymns, Trbutes Outsde the church, thousands pressed at polce lnes lstenng to the ancent hymns that welled from wthn. They stood on rooftops and clung to tree lmbs and straned at polce lnes to get a glmpse of the coffn bearng the Negro crusader whose oratory and nonvolent deals emboldened hs people and challenged the na- tonal conscence. A pale green farm wagon drawn by two Georga mules then carred the coffn four mles to a second memoral servce on a greensward at Morehouse College, Kng's alma mater. Polce estmated that the crowd there had swelled to perhaps,. The memoral servce ncluded a eulogy by Dr. Benjamn Mays, retred presdent of the college and a former teacher of Kng; trbutes by representatves of varous faths and the hymn Precous Lord Take My Hand sung by Mahala Jackson, the gospel snger. The hymn was one that Kng had requested for a servce to have been held the nght he was slan. Mss Jackson wept as she sang: When my lfe s almost gone, hear my cry, hear my call... March On Washngton The wagon was used as a hearse to dramatze Kng's dentfcaton wth the naton's poor. He had planned to lead a poor people's march on Washngton ths month but was cut down by the snper's bullet n Memphs, where he was leadng a demonstraton of strkng garbage workers. Even before the funeral ceremony ended mourners numberng an estmated, began makng ther way slowly toward the Morehouse campus. Mourners Sng Most, however, wated and followed the mule-drawn hearse. They marched curb to curb, sngng the anthem of the cvl rghts move- ment, We Shall Overcome. But for ther solemn pace they were remnscent of the black masses who followed Kng through the streets of Brmngham, Selma, St. Augustne and other Southern ctes durng the early 96s n nonvolent demonstratons demandng an end to racal segregaton. For hs work Kng was awarded the Nobel Peace Prze n 96. The Rev. Mr. Ralph D. Abernathy presded. He was Kng's closest frend, gong to jal wth hm 7 tmes n ther crusades of cvl dsobedence. Dr. Martn Luther Kng s now overshadowed by a surprsngly strong student objecton to the schedulng of classes on Good Frday, Several voces have suggested that f classes were called off due to the death of Amerca's most recent Nobel Peace Prze wnner, they should lkewse be canceled n reverence to the Western world's most mportant relgous fgure. Good Frday classes, however, are a matter of Unversty polcy, as s the holdng of classe s on other relgous holdays. Classes are scheduled throughout the year wth out regard to relgous observances that fall durng any term. Snce classes are held on the most sacred days of several relgons, there s no reason why the Unversty should show favor ths week. And yet our governments have had the audacty to hold up our socety as a model of freedom. f the rots accomplsh nothng else, perhaps they wll reveal to whte Amerca the absurdty and mmoralty of an economc and poltcal system whch gladly spends $ bllon a year to put a man on the moon, but can't brng tself to spend $ mllon to extermnate the rats whch plague the slums. TO THE EDTOR: We accept the fact that Dr. Martn Luther Kng was a truly great man whose death was a tragc loss to the naton. Although we should be respectfully mournful, we do not feel that the Unversty s justfed n cancelng classes. Many great leaders have ded wthout such recognton. The th of May has been set asde as a day to honor the men who have ded n the servce of ther country, Yet every Memoral Day fnds Penn State students attendng classes. Why are we not permtted to observe ths holday? Ths Frday, Aprl, s one.of the most mportant dates on the Chrstan calendar. Chrstans everywhere wll be attendng Good Frday servces n honbr of the crucfxon of Chrst. We wll be n class. Why not cancel classes on Good Frday? Were classes canceled n honor of the deaths of Herbert Hoover or Adla Stevenson? Surely we cannot deny the contrbutons these people have made to our country. Let us state agan that we admred and respected the late Dr. Kng and feel we should honor hs memory, But how do we decde whose deaths should be honored by cancellaton of classes and whose should not? Can we justfy ths acton n lght of the fact that both Memoral Day and Good Frday reman unrecognzed by the Unversty? By DEMSE BOWMAN Collegan Staff Wrter There s no reason why a class as large as ours should be $6 n the hole. Ths charge was leveled aganst the New Party canddate for sophomore class presdent, ncumbent Presdent Scott Mller, by Student-Lon Party canddate Mke Kleeman. The ssues for the campagn center around the class's fnancal condton, the possblty of an advsory board n dormtory areas and suggestons for promoton of class sprt. Jonathan Scott Mller (rd-food servces and hotel management-phladelpha) blamed a lack of cooperaton, especally wth regard to the class of 7 jammes, as the cause of the fnancal dffcultes Mller cted the results of a questonnare submtted by hm to all freshmen as evdence that he personally contacted the freshmen n order to gauge the pulse of class sentment. Advsory Board t's slly to expect freshmen to hke down to the HUB for a class meetng especally f they lve n East Halls! Class Concerts? The sophomore class s just as capable as USG or FC of sponsorng bg-name concerts, Kleeman declared. He proposed the concert to oe held over Sophomore Weekend n an effort to attract more class members and thus rase the badly depleted treasury. The falure of the Sprt of '7 newsletter to be publshed ths term was attrbuted by Kleeman to the lack of a competent staff, manned by freshmen nterested n producng a worthwhle journalstc project and servng ther class at the same tme. Kleeman expanded the dea of a class of '7 advsory board n dormtory areas to nclude fraterntes as well as the town ndependent men. Fall term, a good percentage of the sophomore men wll be movng out of dormtores nto ether fraternty houses or apartments the class councl should be convenent to them as well. Kleeman would also lke to work wth the Undergraduate Student-Government to strve for better lghtng condtons at the Unversty to elmnate the danger of walkng on campus at nght for anyone male or female. As a fund-rasng sprt-promotng project, Kleeman would lke to sell Class of '7 jerseys wth the proceeds to go to the bookstore fund.
