This Week at First Christian Church For the week of July 19, 2017 Thank you for a wonderful Installation Sunday. I feel honored to be your pastor to be installed (or downloaded, as Laura said in Children s Moment) into the life of this congregation. I celebrate the line of pastors I have now become a part of. I celebrate the gifts that each of you has and look forward to the ways that we can share our gifts together. I have to tell you that I am remembering that beginning a new ministry can be overwhelming. Don t worry I say this in the best sense of this word. There are so many of you and I want to get to know all of you right now I have to remind myself it takes time. There are so many ministries I dream of us doing together, so many conversations I look forward to us having and I m ready for all of them to start right now again, I am reminding myself that there is time for this. So, for now I am working on listening (and continuing to learn your names!). I am trying to listen to learn who you are, what you love and dream both for yourself and this congregation. I am trying to listen to hear what God has in store for us and to discern with you what comes next. As we said on Sunday, there is a great history here at First Christian and a great future as well. We should always be listening to figure out which pieces of who we have been continue and what new details are taking root and blossoming. Hopefully we are always doing that, but as we begin a ministry together the reality is that we are likely to be more intentional. So, that is the work that I will be doing even as I get to know you as people to learn more about who we are as a congregation and where God is calling us in the future. It is work I hope we will be doing together. On a different note, while last Sunday had excitement of its own, this coming Sunday promises even more. We have several families who will be bringing their children to be dedicated. In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination that baptizes people who are old enough to choose it themselves, this act of dedication is a way to remember God s claim on each of us, a chance for parents to covenant to raise children to know a loving God and an opportunity for us as church to offer our ongoing support to the families in our midst. It s another wonderful celebration. I hope you ll be here. Pastor Jill Editor s Note: Peggy will be on vacation the week of July 24. If you have items that need to go in the July 26 newsletter, please email them to Pastor Jill (icdisciple.pastor@gmail.com) by Monday, July 24.

This Week at First Christion Church July 19, 2017 CORALVILLE FOOD PANTRY First Christian has a long history with the Coralville Food Pantry and the work that happens there is important. In fact, a recent thank you note from one of their clients said, All the workers are friendly and helpful. It s nice to see all their smiling faces. I don t know what I would do without the food donated by our generous local purveyors. Thank you all SO much. There are many ways you can connect with the Food Pantry: 1) School Break Nutrition Program distribution (set up in the pantry entryway with extra food for families with school-age children). Sign up here to help on July 25, 26, 27, or 29. 2) The August calendar is ready to go! Check it out here to sign up for your favorite shifts. 3) Here's the July calendar if you'd like to see what openings are available for the rest of this month. If you have not previously been through Volunteer Orientation, you need to do so before first volunteering. The next orientation is Thursday, August 17 at 6:30pm at the Pantry (1002 5 th St., Coralville). You can sign up for orientation at coralvillefoodpantry.org/volunteer. If you can t make this orientation but want to get started volunteering, contact Nora Heaton at nora@coralvillefoodpantry.org. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE FCC FOLKS (Mike Alber, Jonni, Aly & Lydia Hecker, Kara & Kalea Seaton) who helped the Coralville Community Food Pantry with a food drive at New Pioneer Coop on Saturday July 15. CHRISTIAN SYMBOL SPARROW Birds in general symbolize God s presence. Sparrows represent God s concern and care even for those thought insignificant. In Jesus words, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father s care. So don t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29, 31, NIV). July 23: PASTOR JILL SERMON TITLED: "THE NEXT CHAPTER" SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 13:1-9, 18-23.
