Migration Epiphany Sunday - Reflections by Kathy Dickriede It was good to be back at Faith UMC on Sunday to reconnect with folks, to be blessed by dynamic music, to begin 2019 with hope and share in the preaching part of worship. I reconnected with people from my home congregation at Simpson UMC who now worship in this congregation. People who claimed and nurtured me when I was just 5 years old. People who taught me about Noah, and Jesus, and canoing, and friendship. People who let me care for their children when I was a teenager. I reconnected with the people of God who trusted me to lead their youth as a new youth pastor, coming of age myself. People who believed in me and the call that God had on my life. I remembered times of laughter, tears, resurrection, restoration, and love. As we worshiped with violins, organs, guitars, hammer dulcimer and voice, I experienced a peace and sense of God s presence in real and powerful ways. Surely the presence of the Lord was in this place as the bread and cup were shared to re-member the sacrifice of the baby Jesus, Christ Child, and the gift that the Messiah gave. We read the Matthew account of the gifts the magi gave of gold, frankincense and myrrh at the same time celebrating the gift that Jesus gave on the cross. The beautiful star shines above the manger on the altar at the foot of the cross. The story of Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, God reaching for us comes full circle. In the midst of our relationship with each other and this act of worship, we discovered a God who calls us to action. In Matthew 2:1-15 and Psalm 72 we encountered kings, Mary and Joseph, baby Jesus, dreams, compassion, Herod, fear, laws, journeys, aggression, warnings, escape, a star, light and darkness, discovery, and drama - an old story of wise-men and pageantry, well known by church goers. Migration Sunday, is a newer concept that makes the old story a bit more complicated. Bishop Malone challenges us to be bold and courageous in our witness. That is hard sometimes. It is because we reconnect with love for each other and Christ center worship that it is made a bit easier. It is because we reconnect with love for each other and for Christ through worship that our witness is made a bit easier. Take time to read the whole of Matthew chapter 2 and discover your call to action in the story. Thank you for the reconnect, the remembering, and for worship. Peace, Kathy Dickriede former youth pastor at Faith UMC. 1993-1998 currently an Ordained Deacon called to Mission Partnership and UMVIM Leadership of the East Ohio Conference. Currently living in Northfield Ohio and still traveling to Liberia and other places. (Photo of the altar at Garfield UMC at Camphor Mission Station Liberia)
