January 17 ~ St. Anthony The Great St. Anthony is the great patriarch of the monastic life. He was born near Heraclea in Upper Egypt in 251 A.D. Anthony was orphaned at the age of eighteen. One day he heard his village priest reading the Gospel of St. Matthew: Jesus said, if you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me. (19:20) Anthony took Jesus words as a personal message and sold everything he had. With the money he received, he took care of the poor. Anthony went to live in the desert in Egypt. There he met several other monks along the Nile River, from whom he eventually learned entire portions of the Bible by memory. You see, he had never learned to read or write. Anthony spent many years in the desert praying, fasting and asking God for His guidance. It was not always easy. Physical hardships, hunger, thirst and loneliness often made it very difficult for him. He was in the desert some twenty years before people began to come to him for sermons and help. After awhile, people came from all over to seek his advice and pray with him. St. Anthony also helped the Church defeat those who taught wrong beliefs at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. But he was remembered more for his monastic and saintly life in the desert. As the years went by, his reputation of holiness brought hundreds of monks who settled near him to profit by his example and advice. St. Anthony died in 356 A.D. at the age of 105. He serves not only as an inspiration for prayer, but also reminds us what a Christian can do, even with very little or no education.
