It s often remembered as the church s birthday. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised that the Holy Spirit would come upon those who believed in his resurrection. Three thousand people were gathered in Jerusalem when the Spirit came upon them. They were so touched by the Holy Spirit that they began to worship regularly, especially on Sundays, the day of Christ s resurrection. To symbolize the tongues, as of fire (Acts 2:3, NRSV) that came upon the people present at Pentecost, liturgical churches display the color red in their worship services on Pentecost Sunday. Many people attending worship wear red on that day. We hope that you can join us on the day and would like to encourage you to wear RED!!
The Pentecost Offering has helped Disciples start 830 churches since 2001, reaching more than 50,000 individuals who may not have had a relationship with God. Our new churches worship in at least 19 different languages. One important way you can support the creation of new churches in places that do not currently have a Disciples church witness is through your generous gifts to the Pentecost Offering. By supporting the Pentecost Offering, you are making it possible for the Church to recruit, assess, train and coach new church planters. One half of the Offering collected stays in your Region and the other half goes to Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation to support their new church ministry work. We will continue to collect this year s Pentecost offering this coming Sunday. We give praise to God for the sacrifices of generations before us the new churches that were started by courageous, visionary leaders. As a member of a Disciples church that was new once, will you consider participating in this offering so other churches can experience new life? Join us on Sunday, June 15 for a special catered lunch following worship as we say goodbye to our beloved secretary. In continuing our goal to share findings from the recent Congregational Survey, this week we will be focusing on general areas of importance to congregational members. What are our priorities? Nearly two out of three members believe the church should focus on discipleship and growth within our own church so that our people can reach out individually to the needs of the community rather than the church reaching out directly to the needs of the community. More than half of the congregation believes the best strategy for resolving conflicts is collaboration (thinking creatively to resolve the problem without concessions). Members believe that the incoming pastor should have special experience in working with the following groups of people (in order of importance): new Christians and seniors (tied), young families, and other cultures. Finding a new pastor may mean balancing different priorities and preferences. Members feel that the two most important priorities for the pastoral search are: the preaching style and the mix of skills and abilities. Soul-Full PSWR Shoe Drive Dear friends, Back in Jesus day people walked D everywhere they traveled wearing only sandals. What if people didn t have sandals to wear? This June 22 nd we will join the Antioch Christian Church of Los Angeles, along with other congregations, to participate in Soul-Full Shoe Drive. The campaign is a Region-wide shoe drive aiming to raise funds for local congregations, while also meeting the needs of our brothers and sisters internationally. We will be collecting gently worn pairs of shoes. Any kind of shoes, sandals, tennis to boots Rainbows to Adidas to Gucci, we ll take them all. Outreach Ministry Team.
