SERVICE OF THE WORD (Christian Worship page 38) HYMN Let All the People Praise You 302-303 This Is My Father s World 3 January 13, 2019

1. This is my Father s world, And to my list ning ears, All nature sings and round me rings; His grace to me appears. This is my Father s world. I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand these wonders wrought. 2. This is my Father s world. The birds their carols raise; The morning light, the lily white, Declare their Maker s praise This is my Father s world, He shines in all that s fair. In rustling grass I hear him pass; I see his hand ev rywhere. 3. This is my Father s world. Oh, let me ne er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong God is the ruler yet. This is my Father s world. 4 January 13, 2019

Why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King; Let the heavens ring. God reigns; le the earth be glad! CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt 5 January 13, 2019

forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. OH, TASTE AND SEE C: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. PRAYER OF THE DAY 6 January 13, 2019

M: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever C: Amen. THE WORD FIRST LESSON: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 The LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I see a king for myself among his sons. 2 Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me. The LORD said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3 Invite Jesse to the 7 January 13, 2019

sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the person that I point out to you. 4 So Samuel did what the LORD had told him to do and went to Bethlehem. Trembling with fear, the elders of the city came to meet him. They said, Do you come in peace? 5 He said, Yes, in peace. I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. He consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they had come, he looked at Eliab and said, Certainly this is the LORD s anointed. 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at how tall he is, because I have rejected him. For the LORD does not look at things the way man does. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 8 January 13, 2019

9 Then Jesse had Shammah pass by. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD has not chosen any of these. 11 Samuel said to Jesse, Is that all of the young men? Jesse said, There still is the youngest, but he is tending the sheep. Samuel said to Jesse, Send for him, for we cannot sit down to eat until he comes. 12 He sent for him and brought him in. David had red hair and striking eyes, and was good-looking. The LORD said, Get up! Anoint him, because this is the one. 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. The Spirit of the LORD rushed on David with power from that day forward. After that Samuel set out and returned to Ramah. PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 2 (CW page 65) Great are the works of the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! 9 January 13, 2019

Great are the works of the Lord. Why do the nations conspire* and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD* and against his Anointed One. Great are the works of the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! Great are the works of the Lord. The One enthroned in heaven laughs;* the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,* I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill. I will proclaim the decree of the LORD:* 10 January 13, 2019

He said to me, You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Great are the works of the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! Great are the works of the Lord. SECOND LESSON: Titus 3:4 7 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared, 5 he saved us not by righteous works that we did ourselves, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and the renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 11 January 13, 2019

7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs in keeping with the hope of eternal life. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia. C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL: Luke 3:15 17, 21 22 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ. 16 John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But someone mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing 12 January 13, 2019

floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. While he was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! HYMN OF THE DAY: 88 To Jordan Came the Christ, Our Lord 1 To Jordan came the Christ, our Lord, To do his Father s pleasure; Baptized by John, the Father s Word Was given us to treasure. This heav nly washing now shall be A cleansing from transgression 13 January 13, 2019

And by his blood and agony Release from death s oppression. A new life now awaits us. 2 These truths on Jordan s banks were shown By mighty word and wonder. The Father s voice from heav n came down Which we do well to ponder: This man is my beloved Son, In whom my heart has pleasure. Him you must hear, and him alone, And trust in fullest measure The word that he has spoken. 3 Oh, hear and mark the message well, For God himself has spoken. Let faith, not doubt, among us dwell, And so receive this token. Our Lord here with his Word endows Pure water freely flowing. God s Holy Spirit here avows Our kinship while bestowing The baptism of his blessing. 14 January 13, 2019

4 All that the mortal eye beholds Is water as we pour it. Before the eye of faith unfolds The pow r of Jesus merit. For here it sees his precious blood To all our ills bring healing, The wonders of that crimson flood The love of God revealing, Assuring his own pardon. 5 To his disciples spoke the Lord, Go out to ev ry nation And bring to them the living Word And this my invitation: Let ev ryone abandon sin And come in true contrition To be baptized and thereby win Full pardon and remission And heav nly bliss inherit. SERMON: Titus 3:4-7 Jesus Appeared 1. Pouring out the kindness and love of God 15 January 13, 2019

2. Renewing us for eternal life APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, 16 January 13, 2019

the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Lord God, our maker and preserver, we praise and thank you for all that you give us day after day. C: We are not worthy of all the mercies you show us. M: You have given us your precious Word to nourish our souls and to protect us from the temptations of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature. C: We thank you for those who teach and preach your saving truth at this place and everywhere. 17 January 13, 2019

Grant them a rich measure of patience, wisdom, and love. M: Heavenly Father, we pray that you shield us from every kind of danger: sudden catastrophe, terrors of crime, and the pain of disease. Watch over those who travel by land, sea, and air. Keep our loved ones from whatever perils may threaten them. C: Heal those who are sick, cheer those who are sad, calm those who are distressed, and comfort all who are old and infirm. M: Bless our land, our people, and those who hold offices of high trust. Keep our government and schools upright and strong for the advancement of good citizenship and useful vocations, that we may enjoy your gifts of peace, security, and well-being. C: Grant your blessing to every nation on earth. Where there are wars, may there be peace. Where there is hatred, let it be healed. Where there is poverty, danger, or disaster, come with your almighty power to help and restore. 18 January 13, 2019

Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: We bring these requests before you in the name of Jesus our Lord, and ask you to hear us. Take all that we have, our bodies and minds, our time and skills, our ministries and offerings, and use them to your glory. C: We give ourselves to you that we may serve you in whatever way is pleasing in your sight. Amen. LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from 19 January 13, 2019

evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Hymn: 89 To Jordan s River Came Our Lord 1 To Jordan s river came our Lord, The Christ, whom heav nly hosts adored, The God from God, the Light from Light, The Lord of glory, pow r, and might. 2 The Savior came to be baptized The Son of God in flesh disguised To stand beneath the Father s will And all his promises fulfill. 3 As Jesus in the Jordan stood And John baptized the Lamb of God, The Holy Spirit, heav nly dove, Descended on him from above. 4 Then from God s throne with thund rous sound Came God s own voice with words profound: 20 January 13, 2019

This is my Son, was his decree, The one I love, who pleases me. 5 The Father s word, the Spirit s flight Anointed Christ in glorious sight As God s own choice, from Adam s fall To save the world and free us all. 6 Now rise, faint hearts: be resolute! This man is Christ, our substitute! He was baptized in Jordan s stream, Proclaimed Redeemer, Lord supreme. M: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 21 January 13, 2019

C: Amen. M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. C: Amen. Amen. Amen. Closing Hymn: 82 Songs of Thankfulness and Praise 1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to you we raise, Manifested by the star To the Magi from afar, Branch of royal David s stem, In your birth at Bethlehem. Anthems be to you addressed, God in man made manifest. 22 January 13, 2019

2 Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme, And at Cana, Wedding Guest, In your Godhead manifest; Manifest in pow r divine, Changing water into wine. Anthems be to you addressed, God in man made manifest. 3 Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil s might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill. Anthems be to you addressed, God in man made manifest. 4 Sun and moon shall darkened be; Stars shall fall, the heav ns shall flee. Christ will then like lightning shine; All will see his glorious sign. All will then the trumpet hear; All will see the judge appear. 23 January 13, 2019

You by all will be confessed, God in man made manifest. 5 Grant us grace to see you, Lord, Mirrored in your holy Word. May our lives and all we do Imitate and honor you That we all like you may be At your great epiphany And may praise you, ever blest, God in man made manifest.
