Elkton United Methodist Church Sunday, March 18, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent 8:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Before the service begins, please give your white prayer request card to an usher. Please see an usher if you would like to have a large print bulletin or hymnal. All worshipers are asked to sign the attendance register. If you are a guest, please fill out all the information. GENTLE SHEPHERD Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us, for we need you to help us find our way. Gentle Shepherd, come and feed us, for we need your strength from day to day. There s no other we can turn to who can help us face another day; Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us, for we need you to help us find our way. **CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively) Leader: We give praise and thanks to our God, People: who delivers us from futility and darkened understanding. Leader: Who is our hope in hard times - People: our mighty and everlasting hope. Leader: Who is our joy to please, People: and our salvation every day. All: Come, let us worship our God! **HYMN #159 (UMH)... LIFT HIGH THE CROSS CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Loving and compassionate God, we realize that we have often resembled enemy agents more than people of reconciliation. With angry words and vindictive actions we have harmed our brothers and sisters. We have dehumanized those we do not wish to understand. We distance ourselves from those who disappoint us or remind us of our own frailty. Forgive us, O God; lift us to a higher, holier purpose. Help us to draw as close to each other as you drew to us in Christ. Help us to regard persons no longer from a human point of view but from the vantage point of the cross where all hostility was conquered, all forgiveness assured. For we pray in Jesus name. Amen. OPEN MY EYES Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me; Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! SERMON... WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE:... REV. KAREN F. BUNNELL V EXTRAVAGANT LOVE **HYMN (see yellow insert)... WHEN MARY POURED A RICH PERFUME (During the singing of the hymn at the 8:30 service, the children may leave for choir practice in Room 1.) PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD'S PRAYER (in unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. RESPONSE #2215 (TFWS)... CARES CHORUS I cast all my cares upon you, I lay all of my burdens down at your feet, and anytime that I don't know what to do, I will cast all my cares upon you. ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME GUESTS! We welcome all to worship at Elkton UMC this morning, and extend a special welcome to all who are visiting with us this morning. Please fill out the blue visitor card located in the pew racks. We also have a gift for all first-time visitors to our church. It is available from the welcome center or from the ushers in the foyer. If you are a first-time visitor and wish to receive the gift, just speak to one of the ushers as you're leaving the worship service this morning, and they will see that you receive one! Once again, welcome to worship at Elkton UMC! THE SEASON OF LENT The season of Lent is the forty-day period (not including Sundays), from Ash Wednesday to Easter. During Lent, we are called to a time of contemplation, penitence and confession, a time to intentionally grow deeper in our faith, and a time to ponder what Jesus did for us and our salvation. Because of the solemnity of the season, you will notice changes in our worship service during the Sundays ahead. Some of the sung responses have changed (prayer response, Gospel response); the choir will not process during the opening hymn; we will refrain from applause, and we will sing no alleluias until we raise the glorious Alleluias! of Easter morn. COPIES OF TODAY S SERMON/VIDEO OF TODAY S SERMON Several persons with hearing difficulties have found it helpful to have a copy of the sermon and read along as it is preached, therefore copies are now available from the ushers should you wish to have one. Video of the sermon are now being posted on-line as well. To see a video, go the church website, elktonumc.org and click on the Sermons link and there you will see a link to the You Tube site for our sermons.
