A Family Perspective The mother in today s gospel persisted even when she was ignored and insulted. She would do whatever was necessary to bring relief to her child. Parenting is more than bringing life into the world; it is also about sacrificing daily for your children. Stewardship Message In today s second reading, St. Paul tells the Romans, God s Gift s and His call are irrevocable. To what is God calling me to do today? What gifts are mine to share? See Romans 11:29 A GOOD PRAYER A good prayer, though often used, is still fresh and fair in the eyes and ears of heaven. Thomas Fuller

Page Five Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time...August 14, 2011 On November 27, 2011, a new English translation of the Roman Missal will be used to celebrate Mass throughout the United States. Did the U.S.A. need a new Missal? It all began in 2002 when a new Roman Missal, 3rd edition, was published in Latin for the Roman Rite. This Latin missal was given to all of us and is call the editio typica, meaning that it is the original or source document for all Roman Missals, whatever the language. Once a new edition of the Latin Missal has been published, the bishops must direct the translation of the Missal into their own language. The 2011 English Roman Missal, that will replace the missal now in use, is our translation of the 2002 3rd edition of the Missale Romanum. At the beginning, our attention to some changes in the words of the prayers will offer us all an opportunity to improve our conscious participation in the Mass. The language of this translation will promote understanding of the action of Christ and the Church in the Liturgy. More to follow. MIRACLES XXII.Saturday, September 17th from 6pm-midnight at the CT. Convention Center. Benefiting the CT. Join Replacement Institute at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Silent Wine & Wine Dinner Auction, Gourmet Dinner and Dancing to the music of BOSS. $275.00 p.p. Contact the St. Francis Foundation at (860) 714-4900 for information. We welcome our newest Eucharistic Ministers: Barbara Clark and Dennis & Helen Sweeney. We pray that God will bless them as they begin their new ministry. My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. As a church, let us pray for an increase in vocations of priesthood and religious life. If you feel called to follow the Lord, call Father Michael Dolan, Director of Vocations, Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas Seminary, (860) 761-7456 or e-mail vocations@stseminary.org, or visit the web at www.vocationshartford.org. The Corpus Christi After-School Program is looking for Aides to fill positions for the 2011/2012 school year. Save the Date: Join parishioners, Alumni, Parents, Family/Friends for A Gala Celebration Honoring the 50th Anniversary of Corpus Christi School and paying tribute to the Leadership of Fr. Thomas B. Campion, at a Dinner Dance, October 15th, 6pm, The Bond Ballroom, Hartford. Call Natalie (860) 529-2545. No prayer, no power! - Anonymous

Page Six Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time...August 14, 2011 WHY PRAY? The foreigners as Isaiah calls them, the Gentiles as Paul calls them, or the Canaanites as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend, but also to break, blow, burn, and make me new (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, Knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today s Gospel, the results will follow. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Thus says the LORD: Stand firm in justice; do what is right (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7). Psalm O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel Recognizing the Canaanite woman s great faith, Jesus told her, It shall be done as you wish (Matthew 15:21-28). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2; Ps 132; 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28 Day: Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Ps 45; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56 Tuesday: Jgs 6:11-24a; Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday: Jgs 9:6-15; Mt 20:1-16 Thursday: Jgs 11:29-39a; Mt 22:1-14 Friday: Ru 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Mt 22:34-40 Saturday: Ru 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17; Mt 23:1-12 Sunday: Is 22:19-23; Ps 138; Rom 11:33-36; Mt 16:13-20 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; World Youth Day Tuesday: St. Stephen of Hungary Friday: St. John Eudes Saturday: St. Bernard FEAST OF FAITH The Shape of the Eucharistic Prayer Our Eucharistic Prayers originated in the traditional Jewish meal prayers known as berakah, which were prayers of thanksgiving used at meals. Over the centuries, the Christian thanksgiving, or Eucharist, gradually took shape. While in the East the Eucharistic Prayers (called anaphora) took many forms, in the Roman Church there was for many centuries just one Eucharistic Prayer, called the Roman Canon (now known as Eucharistic Prayer I). Almost all Eucharistic Prayers include the same basic elements. They begin with thanksgiving and acclamation. Then there is an epiclesis, as the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts. Then follows the institution narrative and consecration, as the words that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper are repeated. After the consecration, we remember in an explicit way all that Christ has done for us this is the anamnesis, or remembering. The prayer concludes with the offering, the intercessions prayers for the Church, our leaders, ourselves and a final doxology of praise. The reforms of the Second Vatican Council enriched our liturgy with additional Eucharistic Prayers, including both ancient texts (Eucharistic Prayer II is based on the most ancient of all existing Eucharistic Prayers) and new compositions.
